Abstract: | Long ridges and troughs are characteristic of the East Pacific rise off North and Central America. The trends of the topography are parallel to the trends of magnetic anomalies but are not specifically related. Locally the topography, like the magnetic anomalies, shows a gross symmetry and the sea floor spreading hypothesis could account for that fact. Simultaneous rifting and accumulation of lava flows around opening rifts appear capable of generating this topography. |
