λ 4097.3 Niii emission in the chromospheric spectrum?

The recent tentative identification of a chromospheric emission line at = 4097.342 Å with the Niii transition 3s²S_1/2 $#x2212; 3p²P_3/2 is discussed. It is shown that the observed intensity is inconsistent with the observed flux in the XUV resonance lines and considerably greater than the predicted intensity from the chromosphere-corona transition zone. Microphotometry of a plate shows that the line is a short interval of continuum between absorption lines.
