Abstract:Desertification process can be indicated by the flourish and decline of ancient cities in desert. The reason of the abandonment of Tongwan city, an ancient city which located on the southern margin of Mu Us Sandy Land, is always a hot research point. It has significance for the understanding of the environment change in the Loess Plateau and the predicting of the deserts expansion in the Northern of China. The comprehensive analysis of the environment and climate change in the Tongwan city during geological period and human historical period is made in this paper. The results show that it is the climate change that lead to the environment degradation and desertification in Tongwan city. The abandonment of Tongwan city illustrates that mankind must follow the natural laws while preventing desertification.
