Abstract:A 3-d numerical model for simulating sediment-laden turbulent flows in open charmel is needed in engineering aPPlications.A literature review has found that the state of the art in this field needs to be further advanced. ms is primarily due to the insufficient understanding in the coupling mechanism between the turbulent flow and the suspended sedimellt. This paper reports a research project with an objective to systematically enhance the level of accuracy of such a computational simulation model by including the dynamic interactions between tile flow field and the suspended sediment. It is found that the effect of the suspended load on the turbulent flow field can be accounted for approximately by an additional eddy viscosity term being introduced in the Rerpolds averaged equations. This paper presents the theoretical analysis supporting the approach, the model implementation, and the model validation. The simulation results agree well with available experimental data. The limitation of the Present model in terms of the maximum allowable concentration is discussed. Further work for possible improvement is also suggested.
