Abstract:The oxidation rates of Mn(II) in water samples from two English lakes, Esthwaite Water and Rostherne Mere, display clear temperature optima, varying from 15°C to 30°C, in the pH range 7–8. This is strong evidence of biological mediation of the oxidation. The types and concentrations of Mn-oxidising organisms appear to vary with depth and time in both lakes.
