Sodic metapelites with jadeite, chloritoid, glaucophane and lawsonite form a coherent regional metamorphic sequence, several tens of square kilometres in size, and over a kilometre thick, in the Orhaneli region of northwest Turkey. The low‐variance mineral assemblage in the sodic metapelites is quartz + phengite + jadeite + glaucophane + chloritoid + lawsonite. The associated metabasites are characterized by sodic amphibole + lawsonite ± garnet paragenesis. The stable coexistence of jadeite + chloritoid + glaucophane + lawsonite, not reported before, indicates metamorphic pressures of 24 ± 3 kbar and temperatures of 430 ± 30 °C for the peak blueschist facies conditions. These P–T conditions correspond to a geotherm of 5 °C km?1, one of the lowest recorded in continental crustal rocks. The low geotherm, and the known rate of convergence during the Cretaceous subduction suggest low shear stresses at the top of the downgoing continental slab.  相似文献

Cr-rich magnesiochloritoid in the eclogitized ophiolites of the Monviso massif occurs in the least differentiated rocks of the gabbroic sequence (troctolites to melatroctolites). Chloritoid ( X Mg=0.63–0.85; Cr≤0.55, atoms) co-exists with omphacite, talc and garnet. Minor, syn-eclogitic minerals are chromite, rutile and sometimes magnesite and Cr–Ti oxides.
Coronitic textures, indicative of a static recrystallization, characterize the analysed samples. Layers of variable mineral composition develop among igneous plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and spinel. The minerals in the coronitic layers display sharp compositional zonings. The igneous minerals are commonly not preserved; their presence in the original assemblage is inferred from the mineralogical composition of the pseudomorphs.
Syn-eclogitic volatile components are indicated by the development of OH-bearing minerals (e.g. chloritoid & talc) and carbonates (e.g. magnesite), and supported by the presence of coarse-grained and fibrous mineral growths. The complex pseudomorphic replacements of igneous minerals suggest that these rocks changed their mineralogical composition prior to the eclogite facies recrystallization, most likely during ocean-floor metamorphism. It is suggested that syn-eclogitic fluids formed by breakdown reactions of pre-eclogitic volatile-bearing minerals.
Geothermobarometry indicates that the investigated rocks recrystallized at a depth corresponding to 2.4  GPa and temperatures of 620±50  °C. The attainment of high-pressure conditions is supported by the presence of magnesiochloritoid, magnesite and garnet with high pyrope content (up to 58  mol%). P–T  estimates point to a very low thermal gradient (about 9  °C km−1), comparable to that deduced in the adjacent Dora-Maira ultra-high pressure unit.  相似文献

Abstract Chloritoid and pyrophyllite occur together in all major goldfields of the Witwatersrand Basin and are widespread in virtually all rock types of the upper Witwatersrand Supergroup, including metaconglomeratic reefs and altered mafic rocks. Both minerals are particularly characteristic of the pelitic horizons intimately associated with reef packages, but they are also developed locally in the regionally persistent metapelites that have basin-wide extent. Pyrophyllite is particularly common in foliated zones, adjacent to quartz veins, and near unconformably overlying auriferous conglomerates. The wide distribution of chloritoid and pyrophyllite in metapelites of the Witwatersrand Basin is attributed to alteration of chlorite-rich shales, rather than to unusual premetamorphic starting materials. This alteration event involved the redistribution of many elements, with up to 40% volume loss, mainly due to removal of silica. Removal of most of the Mg and some Fe accounts for the stabilization of chloritoid and pyrophyllite. Relatively immobile elements included Al, Ti, Nb, Cr, V, P, La and Ce, whereas Si, Fe, Mn, Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Mg and Ca were lost, and K, Rb and Ba were introduced by an infiltrating fluid. The alteration event is inferred to have been within the chloritoid and pyrophyllite stability field (and thus syn-metamorphic) as bulk chemical changes in metapelites are from chlorite directly towards chloritoid and then pyrophyllite, rather than to lower grade minerals such as kaolinite. Muscovite–chlorite–chloritoid and muscovite–chloritoid–pyrophyllite assemblages are attributed to fluid buffering along appropriate curves, as their production by metamorphism of lower grade mineral mixes is considered unlikely, based on the present bulk rock compositional data. A metamorphic timing for the alteration accounts for the correlation of strongly foliated areas with greater degrees of inferred alteration. The transitions from chlorite to chloritoid to pyrophyllite define zones of increasing alteration. Widespread infiltration as part of peak metamorphism is suggested by the distribution of chloritoid and pyrophyllite, quartz veining and textures. Fluid:rock ratios calculated from a silica budget in one metapelitic horizon exceed 100:1 over many square kilometres. These values need not imply multi-pass fluid flow, as much of the silica migration may be redistribution on a scale of a few metres, from source rocks into veins. Although infiltration during metamorphism may have affected much of the upper Witwatersrand succession, channelized fluid flow within reef packages, along faults and unconformities and in certain metaconglomerates and metapelites is inferred.  相似文献

A compilation of literature data on the Fe-Mg composition of coexisting chlorite and chloritoid from metapelites metamorphosed at various P - T  conditions shows that the logarithm of the Fe-Mg partitioning (ln K D) varies linearly with the inverse of temperature, from about 2.4 at 300  °C to about 1.3 at 600  °C. In contrast, no trend was observed with pressure, and the molar volumes of Mg- and Fe-chlorite end-members suggest that the pressure dependence of ln K D is not significant. Therefore, the chloritoid-chlorite Mg-Fe exchange reaction is a potential thermometer and has been empirically calibrated using the analyses of 112 chloritoid-chlorite pairs from 28 different localities. Temperatures estimated using the Chl-Cld thermometer were checked against independent estimates for 20 samples not involved in the calibration (Beni Mzala window, Morocco), and the results are in fair agreement with independent temperature estimates. However, the analytical uncertainties and errors are too large to obtain reliable temperature estimates for extremely Mg-rich or Fe-rich compositions. The Chl-Cld thermometer is unreliable at XMg-CLD<0.2 and XMg-CLD>0.8 at 700  °C, and XMg-CLD<0.1 and XMg-CLD>0.9 at 300  °C. Using the results of the empirical calibration, we calculated new thermodynamic data for daphnite. Implementing these data, it becomes possible to estimate T  and P conditions of metamorphism for the invariant chlorite-chloritoid-quartz-aluminosilicate assemblage that is widespread in low-grade metapelites. These estimates appear to be relevant only in the stability field of kyanite, whereas the uncertainties on the calculated pressure conditions are very large in the stability field of kaolinite and pyrophyllite.  相似文献

Abstract An outcrop of staurolite-bearing pelitic schist from the Solitude Range in the south-western Rocky Mountains, British Columbia, was examined in order to determine the nature of prograde garnet- and staurolite-producing reactions using information from garnet zoning and inclusion mineralogy. Although not present as a matrix phase, chloritoid is present as inclusions in garnet and is interpreted to have participated in the simultaneous growth of garnet and staurolite by a reaction such as chloritoid + quartz = garnet + staurolite + H2O.
A garnet zoning trend reversal, which is most pronounced with respect to almandine and grossular components, is present in the outer core of garnets. The location of the zoning reversal corresponds to the outer limit of chloritoid inclusions in garnet. As there is no evidence for polymetamorphism, the zoning reversal is interpreted to indicate continued garnet growth by prograde reaction(s) during a single metamorphic event after the exhaustion of chloritoid as a matrix phase.
Metamorphic conditions recorded by mineral rim compositions are 550–600° C at 6–7 kbar. Because there is no evidence for partial resorption of garnet during production of staurolite, we interpret these results to represent peak conditions.  相似文献

The Laramie Mountains of south-eastern Wyoming contain two metamorphic domains that are separated by the 1.76 Ga. Laramie Peak shear zone (LPSZ). South of the LPSZ lies the Palmer Canyon block, where apatite U–Pb ages are c. 1745 Ma and the rocks have undergone Proterozoic kyanite-grade Barrovian metamorphism. In contrast, in the Laramie Peak block, north of the shear zone, the U–Pb apatite ages are 2.4–2.1 Ga, the granitic rocks are unmetamorphosed and supracrustal rocks record only low-T amphibolite facies metamorphism that is Archean in age. Peak mineral assemblages in the Palmer Canyon block include (a) quartz–biotite–plagioclase–garnet–staurolite–kyanite in the pelitic schists; (b) quartz–biotite–plagioclase–low-Ca amphiboles–kyanite in Mg–Al-rich schists, and locally (c) hornblende–plagioclase–garnet in amphibolites. All rock types show abundant textural evidence of decompression and retrograde re-equilibration. Notable among the texturally late minerals are cordierite and sapphirine, which occur in coronas around kyanite in Mg–Al-rich schists. Thermobarometry from texturally early and late assemblages for samples from different areas within the Palmer Canyon block define decompression from >7 kbar to <3 kbar. The high-pressure regional metamorphism is interpreted to be a response to thrusting associated with the Medicine Bow orogeny at c. 1.78–1.76 Ga. At this time, the north-central Laramie Range was tectonically thickened by as much as 12 km. This crustal thickening extended for more than 60 km north of the Cheyenne belt in southern Wyoming. Late in the orogenic cycle, rocks of the Palmer Canyon block were uplifted and unroofed as the result of transpression along the Laramie Peak shear zone to produce the widespread decompression textures. The Proterozoic tectonic history of the central Laramie Range is similar to exhumation that accompanied late-orogenic oblique convergence in many Phanerozoic orogenic belts.  相似文献

The Witwatersrand goldfields contain abundant assemblages that include pyrophyllite, chloritoid, chlorite, kaolinite and/or kyanite, with quartz. A chemographic analysis of the system Fe(Mg)-Al-Si-O-H involving these minerals yields 22 potential phase diagrams. Using orientation criteria and thermodynamic calculations as further constraints, this list has been reduced to three possible diagrams. New thermodynamic data favour one of these in particular.
This chemographic analysis demonstrates that formation of chloritoid is not restricted to the breakdown reaction of kaolinite plus chlorite in the F(M)ASH system, as stated by previous studies, but could be from pyrophyllite + chlorite → chloritoid + quartz + H2O.
The metamorphic temperature variation between Witwatersrand goldfields exceeded 65 C, based on chlorite and chloritoid compositions. The lower and upper pressure limits are constrained by the andalusite to kyanite, and the sudoite/chlorite to carpholite boundaries, i.e. 1.5–2.8, and 7 kbar, respectively. The widespread pyrophyllite, chlorite and Fe-chloritoid in all the Witwatersrand goldfields, and the local occurrence of sudoite indicate a consistent low-pressure environment in which Mg-chloritoid would not be stable.

Abstract In the Bois de Cené area, blueschist facies rocks, characterized by glaucophane and/ or chloritoid, provide evidence for a suture zone in the Variscan. This terrain is considered to be the eastern equivalent of the Ile de Groix high-pressure metamorphic terrain. Petrological study of the two characteristic types of rocks found in the area shows that the primary high-pressure paragenesis was modified during a retrogression which followed substantial decompression, probably at constant or decreasing temperature. The simplest interpretation is that this retrogression followed tectonic emplacement within a nappe pile.  相似文献
