Some peculiarities in the Asteroidal Belt

The analysis of the fine structure of the Asteroidal Belt evidenciates a group of asteroids next to the resonance 4/9 with Jupiter. In this group and in other groups associated to the Hirayama families there are indications that their orbital parameters can be represented by quantum numbers as defined here and in two of our previous works. Together with this the distribution of the eccentricities and inclinations of the orbital planes of short period comets and diverse type of asteroids indicates that they can be classified as objects with e > sin i and objects with e > sin i with a limit e = sin i which determinates geometrical properties of the orbits related with discrete states in the solar system. This study lets open the possibility of following studies in order to confirm the quantum characteristics of the Asteroidal Belt being these characteristics common to all the solar system and depending of the same fundamental constant of action per mass unit H ₀ = 1/2 ₀ × T ₀ (potential × time) because only a small part of all the available data in the Asteroid Belt is used here.     

Angular momenta in the solar system

A statistical study of the orbital parameters of comets, asteroids and meteor streams shows that the vectors representing their angular momenta per mass unit (or the average angular momentum for meteor streams) are not arbitrarily distributed in the space: They are clustered around determinated values of angles . This synthesizes the eccentricities and inclinations of the orbital planes in a unique parameter adequated for the statistical purposes of the present work being defined by cos = cos (arc sin e) cos i.The discreteness of the obtained distribution N() and its relation with the components of the angular momenta per mass unit is analysed having this distribution common features for objects of different nature and located in different places in the solar potential well. Some hypotheses concerning to these effects are discussed.     

Spectropolarimetry of the methane and ammonia bands of Jupiter between 6800 and 8200 Å

Spectropolarimetry of Jupiter at resolutions between 22 and 35 Å reveals a strong increase of linear polarization in the 7250-$\text{A}\text{?}$ CH₄ band. This is very probably due to the decreasing contribution toward the band center of the higher orders of scattering, which have a smaller net polarization than the first few orders. The linear polarization is also enhanced in the band at 7900 $\text{A}\text{?}$ comprising the 7920-$\text{A}\text{?}$ NH₃ and 7600- to 8200-$\text{A}\text{?}$ CH₄ bands. The normalized circular polarization shows a feature at 7250 $\text{A}\text{?}$ with a dispersion shape. This is most probably produced in a double-scattering process involving either a solid or liquid aerosol with an absorption at 7250 $\text{A}\text{?}$. Methane aerosols, the obvious candidates from a spectroscopic point of view, are, however, forbidden if current estimates of the Jovian atmospheric temperature are correct.     

Multiphase structural evolution of the western margin of the Girardot subbasin, Upper Magdalena Valley, Colombia

More than 1400 km of two-dimensional seismic data were used to understand the geometries and structural evolution along the western margin of the Girardot Basin in the Upper Magdalena Valley. Horizons are calibrated against 50 wells and surface geological data (450 km of traverses). At the surface, low-angle dipping Miocene strata cover the central and eastern margins. The western margin is dominated by a series of en echelon synclines that expose Cretaceous–Oligocene strata. Most synclines are NNE–NE trending, whereas bounding thrusts are mainly NS oriented. Syncline margins are associated mostly with west-verging fold belts. These thrusts started deformation as early as the Eocene but were moderately to strongly reactivated during the Andean phase. The Girardot Basin fill records at least four stratigraphic sequences limited by unconformities. Several periods of structural deformation and uplifting and subsidence have affected the area. An early Tertiary deformation event is truncated by an Eocene unconformity along the western margin of the Girardot Basin. An Early Oligocene–Early Miocene folding and faulting event underlies the Miocene unconformity along the northern and eastern margin of the Girardot Basin. Finally, the Late Miocene–Pliocene Andean deformation folds and erodes the strata along the margins of the basin against the Central and Eastern Cordilleras.     

Datation UPb : âge de mise en place du magmatisme bimodal des Jebilet centrales (chaı̂ne Varisque,Maroc). Implications géodynamiques

The bimodal magmatism of central Jebilet is dated to 330.5^+0.68_?0.83 Ma by UPb dating on zircons. This age, similar to that of the syntectonic Jebilet cordierite-bearing granitoids, corresponds to the age of the local major tectonometamorphic event. The syntectonic plutonism of the Jebilet massif, composed of tholeiitic, alkaline, and peraluminous calc-alkaline series, is variegated. Magmas emplacement was favoured by the local extension induced by the motion along the western boundary of the Carboniferous basins of the Moroccan Meseta. The Jebilet massif exemplifies the activation of various magmas sources during an episode of continental convergence and crustal wrenching.     

Palynological Evidence for Climatic Change and Human Activity during the Holocene on Minorca (Balearic Islands)

Four pollen diagrams from Minorca (Balearic Islands) have been correlated with other previously studied sequences from Majorca and Minorca to define a Holocene landscape sequence for the region from 8000 yr B.P. to the present. The lower part of the pollen diagrams reflects a climatic phase with more rain and less-marked seasonality than today. Significant quantities ofCorylus, Buxus,and mesophilous taxa are found. In the middle part, between 5000 and 4000 yr B.P., a strong change is recorded in composition and structure of the vegetational landscape, with vegetation appearing that was adapted to Mediterranean conditions. This episode coincided with the first human colonization of the island and also with a widespread climatic change in the western Mediterranean region. The change in taxa was complex and some sclerophyllous taxa suchOleaplayed an important role in the transformation of the landscape physiognomy from the mid-Holocene until the present. Although human activities have removed much of the Mediterranean vegetation on the Balearic Islands, it seems clear that the changes have been brought about, in part, by increasing dryness.     

Applicability of a Backprojection Algorithm to Reconstruct Images of Subsurface Horizontal Planes for Laboratory Experiments in Electrical Resistance Tomography

This paper describes the use of a backprojection algorithm to reconstruct subsurface images of the electrical resistivity in horizontal planes parallel to the surface. The algorithm can be applied to detect buried objects such as tanks or pipes and possible leakages from them. Two imaging strategies are compared: juxtaposition of vertical planes, and 3D reconstruction from the sensitivity matrix corresponding to the entire volume whose surface is explored. The electrode arrays used for voltage measurement are the dipole–dipole array and a modified Schlumberger array. A personal computer controls current injection, electrode switching, and voltage detection. The system injects 1 kHz, 20 V peak-to-peak square waveforms, thus avoiding electrode polarization effects. Experimental laboratory measurements show that the algorithm detects localized objects such as an insulating sphere and a conductive cylinder immersed in water. Furthermore, covering half of the cylinder by a rubber sleeve to simulate a nonconductive leak, yields a distinct image for the leak. The backprojection algorithm does not need any regularization parameter and it is very fast in inverting the sensitivity matrix because it approximates the inverse matrix by its transposed. The dipole–dipole array usually yields a lower overall pixel error than the modified Schlumberger array but both allow the detection of simulated underground leaks.
