The percentage of normal and reversed magnetization in land-based paleomagnetic studies of Phanerozoic rocks (0 to ? 570 m.y.) have been compiled in order to determine the long-term variation in polarity bias of the geomagnetic field. Where possible the results are compared with the record from marine magnetic anomalies. Only rarely is there an even balance between normal and reversed polarity. During the past 350 m.y. two quiet intervals can be recognized when few reversals occurred, the Cretaceous (KN about ? 81 to ? 110 m.y.) and Permo-Carboniferous (PCR about ? 227 to ? 313 m.y.). Less firmly established are two other quiet intervals, one in the Jurassic (JN about ? 145 to ? 165 m.y.), and one in the Triassic (TRN about ? 205 to ? 220 m.y.). Between these quiet intervals there are disturbed intervals when reversals were comparatively frequent. From ? 680 to ? 350 m.y. the paleomagnetic record is inadequate to delineate a succession of quiet and disturbed intervals although one is probably present. Maximum entropy spectral analysis reveals three periodicities, a dominant one at about 300 m.y. and others, less well-defined, at 113 and 57 m.y. The variations in polarity bias are compared with the paleosecular variation, and it is shown that the magnitude of the paleosecular variation is greater in disturbed than in quiet intervals. This indicates that the magnitude of paleosecular variation and polarity bias are governed by variations in the balance between non-dipole and dipole components of the field, and that these variations probably had their origin in processes near the core—mantle interface. The correspondence between the dominant periods of 300 m.y. and plate tectonics is noted and a causal relationship suggested.  相似文献

There is a need for research into bioindicators of stress in threatened plant communities such as coastal wetlands. Land subsidence, diversion of sediment, and salt-water intrusion produce stresses associated with waterlogging, elevated salinity, and nutrient depletion. Temporal and spatial environmental variation (soil redox potential, interstitial water salinity, pH, ammonium and phosphorus, and cation and trace metal concentrations) was analyzed near Lake de Cade, Louisiana, in a brackish marsh which is a mosaic of healthy plant communities interspersed with areas where wetland loss is occurring. Environmental variation was related to indicators of stress inSpartina patens, which included variables derived from the adenine nucleotide levels in plants, leaf spectral reflectance, leaf proline concentrations, and shoot elongation. In a comparison of burned and unburned sites, streamside and inland marsh, and along a salinity gradient, among-site differences were found in spectral reflectance and adenine-nucleotide-related indicators. Although it was difficult to relate a single causal environmental variable to the response of a specific indicator, spectral reflectance in the visible light range responded to salinity or to elements borne in seawater, and adenine-nucleotide indices were sensitive to nutrient availability. The ability of indicators to detect plant responses changed during the growing season, suggesting that they were responding to the changing importance of different environmental factors. In addition, some reflectance indicator responses occurred along salinity gradients when salinity differences were less than those that were found to have ecologically meaningful effects in greenhouse experiments. A multivariate numerical approach was used to relate environmental variation with indicator responses. We concluded that factors which in combination cause the degradation and loss of Louisiana wetlands produce environmental conditions that are only subtly different from those in vigorously growing marsh communities.  相似文献

The abundances of highly siderophile elements (HSE; including Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, and Pd) and 187Re‐187Os isotopic systematics were determined for two fragments from ungrouped achondrite NWA 7325. Rhenium‐Os systematics are consistent with closed‐system behavior since formation or soon after. The abundances of the HSE were therefore largely unaffected by late‐stage secondary processes such as shock or terrestrial weathering. As an olivine gabbro cumulate, this meteorite has a bulk composition consistent with derivation from a body that produced a core, mantle, and crust. Also consistent with derivation from a body that produced a core, both fragments of NWA 7325 have HSE abundances that are highly depleted compared to bulk chondrites. One fragment has ~0.002× CI chondrite Ir and relative HSE abundances similar to bulk chondrites. The other fragment has ~0.0002× CI chondrite Ir and relative HSE abundances that are fractionated compared to bulk chondrites. The chondritic relative HSE abundances of the fragment characterized by higher HSE abundances most likely reflect the addition of exogenous chondritic material during or after crystallization by surface impacts. The HSE in the other fragment is likely more representative of the parent body crust. One formation model that can broadly account for the HSE abundances in this fragment is multiple episodes of low‐pressure metal‐silicate equilibration, followed by limited late accretion and mantle homogenization. Given the different HSE compositions of the two adjoining fragments, this meteorite provides an example of the overprint of global processes (differentiation and late accretion) by localized impact contamination.  相似文献

Early Carboniferous (Viséan to possibly earliest Namurian) sedimentary rocks of the Deer Lake Group of western Newfoundland rest unconformably on Grenvillian basement rocks of the Canadian Shield which form the western border of the Early Palaeozoic Appalachian orogen. In addition to magnetically soft magnetizations directed along the present field, three families of magnetization directions are found. Two of them (referred to as N (north) and S (south)) are antiparallel and prefolding, and were probably acquired during the depositional process. N and S are roughly of equal frequency. They have a mean direction irrespective of sign of 0.7°, ?35.2°, k = 40, α95 = 8.9°, and a palaeopole 21.5°N, 121.8°E (10.3°, 6.0°) corresponding to a palaeolatitude of 20 ± 6°S. This agrees with the palaeolatitude (17 ± 5°S) determined from the somewhat older Early Carboniferous (Tournaisian) Terenceville Formation of the Avalon Platform on the eastern side of the Appalachian orogen in Newfoundland. The third magnetization, referred to as H (roughly horizontal), has a mean direction 156.8°, ?13.3°, k = 37, α95 = 10.1°, and a palaeopole 45.4°N, 140.3°E (10.3°, 5.3°) corresponding to a palaeolatitude of 7 ± 4°N; we interpret this to be an early Kiaman (latest Carboniferous to early Permian) overprint probably acquired chemically. The palaeolatitude determined from the H overprint agrees with that determined from Early Carboniferous rocks of cratonic North America west of the Appalachians. Therefore, we argue, Early Carboniferous palaeofield determinations for cratonic North America have been strongly biased by unremoved Kiaman overprints. Because of this, and because of the good agreement between Early Carboniferous palaeolatitudes obtained from opposite margins of the Appalachian orogen, we suggest that there is, at present, no palaeomagnetic evidence for the previously proposed 1500 km displacement from the south of an eastern portion of the Appalachians (“Acadia”) relative to cratonic North America during the Carboniferous.  相似文献

Directions of magnetization observed from rock-units from a given continental block are conveniently summarized by a path of apparent polar wander (apw) relative to that block. This article documents apw paths for the major continental blocks spanning the interval from Late Carboniferous (approximately –300 Ma) to the present. It is shown that by passing moving windows of 30 or 40 Ma duration over the data an apw path can be obtained with little or no loss of features through smoothing. It also is shown that mean pole positions obtained using Fisher's statistics or by calculating modes do not differ significantly. In the analysis poor results are screened out by applying certain minimum reliability criteria. Unit weight is then given to each of the remaining results. No attempt has been made to weight the results differentially because of the risk of added subjectivity.The paths contain many interesting features. One is an interval of rapid apparent polar motion relative to all major land-masses that occurred sometime in the Late Permian and Triassic. The general form of these motions is roughly established, but their timing and detailed form is poorly known because of inadequacies in the paleomagnetic record. Although it is clear that the motions occurred sometime around the Paleozoic-Mesozoic boundary it is not known whether the motions are or are not contemporaneous from continent to continent.Apw paths are of great importance for many problems in geology and geophysics. As an example, the new paths are applied to the question of how should Gondwana be correctly assembled. The results show that the best available reconstruction is the 1937 assembly of Alex du Toit as quantified by Smith and Hallam, with a minor modification by Barton and Molnar for the fit of Australia and Antarctica. Assemblies, that place Antaretica to the south and wrap the Antarctic Peninsula around the southern Andes, are not supported by the paleomagnetic data. There are, however, several obscurities, which derive, it is argued, from the uncertainties in timing the Late Permian to Triassic transitions alluded to above.  相似文献

The melting curves of CaCO3 and MgCO3 have been extended to pressures of 36 kb by experiments in piston-cylinder apparatus. At 30 kb, the melting temperatures of calcite and magnesite are 1610°C and 1585°C, respectively. New data for the magnesite dissociation reaction permit the location of an invariant point for the assemblage magnesite + periclase + liquid + vapor near 26 kb-1550°C. New data are also presented for the calcite-aragonite transition at 800°C, 950°C and 1100°C. At pressures above 36–50 kb, calcite and magnesite melt at temperatures lower than the solidus of dry mantle peridotite. Natural and experimental evidence suggests that carbon dioxide in the Earth's mantle could be present in a variety of forms: (a) a free vapor phase, (b) vapor dissolved in silicate magma, (c) crystalline carbonate, (d) carbonatite liquid, (e) carbon-bearing silicate analogs, or (f) carbonato-silicates (such as scapolite, spurrite, tilleyite, and related compounds).  相似文献

Deuterium and O18 analyses were made on 25 formation-water samples from Miocene (Temblor Formation) and Eocene (McAdams Formation) reservoir rocks at Kettleman North Dome oil field, California, and on three surface water samples from Reef Ridge located about three miles to the west of the field. The δO18 values obtained generally increase with depth and most probably are due to temperature controlled exchange reactions with carbonate cement and dissolved carbonate species. The δD values obtained seem to be controlled primarily by the membrane behavior of shales modifying the assumed original values. The contribution of isotopic exchange between water and clays cannot be evaluated at present.The isotopic data support the conclusions based on a detailed study of geology, hydrodynamics, and formation water geochemistry (Kharaka, 1971) which indicate that:1. The Temblor Formation waters are probably meteoric in origin concentrated chemically and isotopically by shale membranes, and 2. The McAdams Formation waters were most probably obtained by squeezing the original interstitial marine connate waters of deposition from the underlying Mesozoic sediments.  相似文献

The effect of No. 2 fuel oil on the biomass production of the salt marsh plant, Spartina alterniflora, was studied in a greenhouse dose-response experiment. S. alterniflora were transplanted into soil with 10 dosage levels of No. 2 fuel oil ranging from 0 to 456 mg g(-1) dry soil. Three months after transplantation, values for plant biomass, stem density, and shoot height decreased significantly with increasing fuel oil level in a dose-response fashion. Evapo-transpiration rates were correlated with the total biomass response. Relative to the control, a significant decrease in total (above- plus below-ground) plant biomass was observed at concentrations above 57 mg g(-1) dry soil. Within the 3-month experimental period, detrimental effects on below-ground biomass accumulation and bioluminescence of the marine bacterium Viberio fisheri in the Microtox Solid Phase Test were observed at oil concentrations >29 mg g(-1) dry soil, suggesting that biological effects of oil within the sediment matrix may be more pronounced than on above-ground biomass, requiring a dosage 228 mg g(-1) dry soil to elicit a significant detrimental effect. Hence, measurements of oil effects with biological end-points based solely on above-ground responses may underestimate the potential impacts of petroleum hydrocarbon spills, especially when the oil has penetrated the soil. While S. alterniflora was proved to be relatively tolerant to the No. 2 fuel oil spills, its effectiveness in phytoremediation operations may be limited at fuel oil levels 228 mg g(-1) dry soil, as both plant growth and microbial activity may be constrained.  相似文献
