Due to favorable conditions of preservation, sedimentary basins provide rich records of human behavior and its environmental context. The conditions for the preservation of archaeological material however vary between basin types (large, river‐fed or small, closed basins), while conditions also differ within a particular basin environment. The goal of this paper is to understand how the dynamics of a small postglacial basin such as Neumark‐Nord 2, a context that dominates the Eemian archaeological record, affected the archaeology situated at its basin margin. The approach used here is to correlate the archaeological record with reconstructions of patterns of deposition and the water conditions within the basin, using lithology, micromorphology, pollen, and macroremains from a transect running from the basin center to the margin. The results show that (1) find levels were exposed to overland flow‐induced winnowing, which vertically concentrated finds but did not cause significant transport, (2) find levels correspond to phases of increased water presence in the basin, and (3) lateral shifts in hominin activity areas may reflect adjustments in the water level. The research shows the importance of large‐scale archaeological excavations and a multidisciplinary sampling strategy that covers both the basin center and the margins, when studying postglacial basin localities like Neumark‐Nord 2.  相似文献

Garnet geochronology was used to provide the first direct measurement of the timing of eclogitization in the central Himalaya. Lu–Hf dates from garnet separates in one relict eclogite from the Arun River Valley in eastern Nepal indicate an age of 20.7 ± 0.4 Ma, significantly younger than ultra-high pressure eclogites from the western Himalaya, reflecting either different origins or substantial time lags in tectonics along strike. Four proximal garnet amphibolites from structurally lower horizons are 14–15 Ma, similar to post-eclogitization ages published for rocks along strike in southern Tibet. PT calculations indicate three metamorphic episodes for the eclogite: i) eclogite-facies metamorphism at ~ 670 °C and ≥ 15 kbar at 23–16 Ma; ii) a peak-T granulite event at ~ 780 °C and 12 kbar; and iii) late-stage amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ~ 675 °C and 6 kbar at ~ 14 Ma. The garnet amphibolites were metamorphosed at ~ 660 °C. Three models are considered to explain the observed PTt evolution. The first assumes that the Main Himalayan Thrust (basal thrust of the Himalayan thrust system) cuts deeper at Arun than elsewhere. While conceptually the simplest, this model has difficulty explaining both the granulite-facies overprint and the pulse of exhumation between 25 and 14 Ma. A second model assumes that (aborted) subduction, slab breakoff, and ascent of India's leading edge occurred diachronously: ~ 50 Ma in the western Himalaya, ~ 25 Ma in the central Himalaya of Nepal, and presumably later in the eastern Himalaya. This model explains the PTt path, particularly heating during initial exhumation, but implies significant along-strike diachroneity, which is generally lacking in other features of the Himalaya. A third model assumes repeated loss of mantle lithosphere, first by slab breakoff at ~ 50 Ma, and again by delamination at ~ 25 Ma; this model explains the PTt path, but requires geographically restricted tectonic behavior at Arun. The PTt history of the Arun eclogites may imply a change in the physical state of the Himalayan metamorphic wedge at 16–25 Ma, ultimately giving rise to the Main Central Thrust by 15–16 Ma.  相似文献

An interdisciplinary study of a small sedimentary basin at Neumark Nord 2 (NN2), Germany, has yielded a high-resolution record of the palaeomagnetic Blake Event, which we are able to place at the early part of the last interglacial pollen sequence documented from the same section. We use this data to calculate the duration of this stratigraphically important event at 3400 ± 350 yr. More importantly, the Neumark Nord 2 data enables precise terrestrial-marine correlation for the Eemian stage in central Europe. This shows a remarkably large time lag of ca. 5000 yr between the MIS 5e ‘peak’ in the marine record and the start of the last interglacial in this region.  相似文献

The surface binding site characteristics and Ni sorptive capacities of synthesized hydrous Mn oxyhydroxides experimentally conditioned to represent three hydrological conditions—MnOXW, freshly precipitated; MnOXD, dried at 37°C for 8 d; and MnOXC, cyclically hydrated and dehydrated (at 37°C) over a 24-h cycle for 7 d—were examined through particle size analysis, surface acid-base titrations and subsequent modelling of the pKa spectrum, and batch Ni sorption experiments at two pH values (2 and 5). Mineralogical bulk analyses by XRD indicate that all three treatments resulted in amorphous Mn oxyhydroxides; i.e., no substantial bulk crystalline phases were produced through drying. However, drying and repeated wetting and drying resulted in a non-reversible decrease in particle size. In contrast, total proton binding capacities determined by acid-base titrations were reversibly altered with drying and cyclically re-wetting and drying from 82 ± 5 μmol/m2 for the MnOXW to 21 ± 1 μmol/m2 for the MnOXD and 37 ± 5 μmol/m2 for the MnOXC. Total proton binding sites measured decreased by ≈75% with drying from the MnOXW and then increased to ≈50% of the MnOXW value in the MnOXC. Thus, despite a trend of higher surface area for the MnOXD, a lower total number of sites was observed, suggesting a coordinational change in the hydroxyl sites. Surface site characterization identified that changes also occurred in the types and densities of surface sites for each hydrologically conditioned Mn oxyhydroxide treatment (pH titration range of 2-10). Drying decreased the total number of sites as well as shifted the remaining sites to more acidic pKa values. Experimentally determined apparent pHzpc values decreased with drying, from 6.82 ± 0.06 for the MnOXW to 3.2 ± 0.3 for the MnOXD and increased again with rewetting to 5.05 ± 0.05 for the MnOXC. Higher Ni sorption was observed at pH 5 for all three Mn oxyhydroxide treatments compared to pH 2. However, changes in relative sorptive capacities among the three treatments were observed for pH 2 that are not explainable simply as a function of total binding site density or apparent pHzpc values. These results are the first to our knowledge, to quantitatively link the changes induced by hydrologic variability for surface acid base characteristics and metal sorption patterns. Further, these results likely extend to other amorphous minerals, such as Fe oxyhydroxides, which are commonly important geochemical solids for metal scavenging in natural environments.  相似文献
