The Gun Emplacement is a small but distinctive bench on the Eden–Burnside Fault Escarpment near Anstey Hill, in the northeastern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, occurring at an elevation of ~210–220 m asl. It is underlain by Middle Eocene North Maslin Sand and is capped by resistant, ferricreted colluvium. Paleomagnetic dating of hematitic mottles in the ferricreted colluvium, immediately underlying the emplacement, returned a Pliocene/Early Pleistocene age. This age is equivalent to that obtained for summit surface weathering. Fault scarps and exposures, including slickensides and fault gouge material, suggest that the Eden–Burnside Fault at this location has a strong en échelon pattern developed in response to reverse-sinistral oblique-slip faulting, reflecting continental stress fields. Remnants of ferricrete cappings forming stranded benches on the Eden–Burnside Fault Escarpment at elevations up to 25 m above the Gun Emplacement demonstrate recurrent tectonism of the South Mt Lofty Ranges related to intraplate deformation. There are at least four distinct ferricrete benches preserved on the eastern side of the active fault leading up from the Gun Emplacement surface. These benches demonstrate alternating periods of stability and tectonic activity disrupting and uplifting the ferricreted surfaces. A fresh surface rupture occurs and may be related to a recent seismic event.  相似文献

The Manning Group is characterised by rapidly filled strike-slip basins that developed during the early Permian along the Peel--Manning Fault System in the southern New England Orogen. Typically, the Manning Group has been difficult to date owing to the lack of fossiliferous units or igneous rocks. Thus, the timing of transition from an accretionary convergent margin in the late Carboniferous to dominantly strike-slip tectonic regimes that involved development and emplacement of the Great Serpentinite Belt (Weraerai terrane) is not well constrained. One exception are rhyolites of the Ramleh Volcanics that were erupted into the Echo Hills Formation. These developed along the dextral Monkey Creek Fault splay east of the Peel--Manning Fault System. Zircons extracted from the Ramleh Volcanics yield a U–Pb (SHRIMP) age of 295.6?±?4.6?Ma that constrains the minimum age of deposition in this basin to earliest Permian. Whole-rock geochemistry indicates these are peraluminous felsic melts enriched in LREE and incompatible elements with strong depletions in U, Nb, Sr and Ti. These are similar in age and composition to the nearby S-type Bundarra and Hillgrove plutonic supersuites. We suggest that extensive movement along the east-dipping Peel--Manning Fault System was responsible, not only for strike-slip basin development at the surface (Manning Group), but was also the locus for crustal melting that was responsible for generating S-type felsic melts that utilised hanging-wall fault splays as conduits to the surface or to coalesce in the crust as batholiths exclusively to the east of the Peel--Manning Fault System.  相似文献

We have compiled 223 sedimentary charcoal records from Australasia in order to examine the temporal and spatial variability of fire regimes during the Late Quaternary. While some of these records cover more than a full glacial cycle, here we focus on the last 70,000 years when the number of individual records in the compilation allows more robust conclusions. On orbital time scales, fire in Australasia predominantly reflects climate, with colder periods characterized by less and warmer intervals by more biomass burning. The composite record for the region also shows considerable millennial-scale variability during the last glacial interval (73.5–14.7 ka). Within the limits of the dating uncertainties of individual records, the variability shown by the composite charcoal record is more similar to the form, number and timing of Dansgaard–Oeschger cycles as observed in Greenland ice cores than to the variability expressed in the Antarctic ice-core record. The composite charcoal record suggests increased biomass burning in the Australasian region during Greenland Interstadials and reduced burning during Greenland Stadials. Millennial-scale variability is characteristic of the composite record of the sub-tropical high pressure belt during the past 21 ka, but the tropics show a somewhat simpler pattern of variability with major peaks in biomass burning around 15 ka and 8 ka. There is no distinct change in fire regime corresponding to the arrival of humans in Australia at 50 ± 10 ka and no correlation between archaeological evidence of increased human activity during the past 40 ka and the history of biomass burning. However, changes in biomass burning in the last 200 years may have been exacerbated or influenced by humans.  相似文献

Physical parameterisations of turbulent transfer processes in the atmospheric boundary layer, such as the stability parameterisations developed by Joost Businger, and recent advances in computing capabilities, have been important factors leading to the emergence of operational, numerical air quality forecasting systems. The present paper investigates the performance of the Australian Air Quality Forecasting System (AAQFS) in forecasting the peak 1 h ozone for the current or next day. These 24/36 h forecasts are generated for the Sydney and Melbourne regions and issued twice daily. Quantitative evidence is presented of the potential for the AAQFS to provide accurate numerical air quality forecasts. A second goal is to provide an initial benchmark for investigating the limits of predictability for air quality in the Sydney and Melbourne regions by looking at the dependence of the forecasts on the domain spatial scale (while maintaining the same model grid resolution), the starting time and length of the forecast (0000 UTC starts are 36-h forecasts and 1200 UTC starts are 24-h forecasts), and the sophistication of the photochemical mechanism (simple chemistry, Generic Reaction Set (GRS) and complex chemistry, Carbon Bond IV (CBIV)). The probability of detection by the forecast model is much better than persistence, showing considerable skill. The normalised bias, in general, decreases going from regional scale to sub-regional scale and becomes negative at the station scale. In Melbourne the gross error increases as the domain spatial scale decreases, but in Sydney there is a dip in the error at the sub-regional scale due to a sampling artifact. Better results are obtained at the smaller domain scales for 1200 UTC forecasts in Sydney. These are attributed to the shorter forecast period and secondarily to greater model spin-up effects at 0000 UTC. In Melbourne the results are ambiguous. Similar conclusions are derived from scatter plots of forecasts versus observations. Dividing the scatter plots into four sections by plotting vertical and horizontal lines (at 60 ppb) forms contingency tables for categorical forecasting. These plots show the increase in missed forecasts due to underprediction and the decrease in the number of extreme events detected as the spatial scale decreases. A comparison of the highly condensed GRS photochemical mechanism with the comprehensive CBIV mechanism indicates that, in general, GRS performs well for predicting ozone in urban situations provided that the background concentrations are appropriately specified. The potential to improve the forecasts at the smaller spatial scales, particularly for extreme events at high ozone concentrations, may require moving to a more complex mechanism as computer resources become available. This paper is dedicated to Joost Businger, who had strong ties with the atmospheric boundary-layer community in Australia over the past 40 years. It was while visiting CSIRO in Aspendale, Victoria, in 1965–1966 that Joost determined the stability dependence of the Monin-Obukhov surface-layer profiles. He immediately walked over to Arch Dyer’s office to show Arch his results. Arch carefully examined them, and then opened his desk drawer and pulled out his own plots of the stability dependence that he and Bruce Hicks had obtained. They showed the same curves, and thus the Businger-Dyer-Hicks stability functions were born. Arch and Bruce at the time were struggling with how to handle the internal politics; they needed Bill Swinbank’s approval, as Assistant Divisional Chief, before they could submit their results for publication. Bill had his own very strong ideas that conflicted with observations. Joost’s independent confirmation of their results provided a way forward (Bruce Hicks, personal communication, 2003). Joost has contributed significantly, either directly or indirectly, to experimental field programs both within Australia and overseas and to the development of parameterisations of turbulent transfer processes in the boundary layer.  相似文献

Spatial variation in mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation in urban coastal watersheds reflects complex interactions between Hg sources, land use, and environmental gradients. We examined MeHg concentrations in fauna from the Delaware River estuary, and related these measurements to environmental parameters and human impacts on the waterway. The sampling sites followed a north to south gradient of increasing salinity, decreasing urban influence, and increasing marsh cover. Although mean total Hg in surface sediments (top 4 cm) peaked in the urban estuarine turbidity maximum and generally decreased downstream, surface sediment MeHg concentrations showed no spatial patterns consistent with the examined environmental gradients, indicating urban influence on Hg loading to the sediment but not subsequent methylation. Surface water particulate MeHg concentration showed a positive correlation with marsh cover whereas dissolved MeHg concentrations were slightly elevated in the estuarine turbidity maximum region. Spatial patterns of MeHg bioaccumulation in resident fauna varied across taxa. Small fish showed increased MeHg concentrations in the more urban/industrial sites upstream, with concentrations generally decreasing farther downstream. Invertebrates either showed no clear spatial patterns in MeHg concentrations (blue crabs, fiddler crabs) or increasing concentrations further downstream (grass shrimp). Best-supported linear mixed models relating tissue concentration to environmental variables reflected these complex patterns, with species specific model results dominated by random site effects with a combination of particulate MeHg and landscape variables influencing bioaccumulation in some species. The data strengthen accumulating evidence that bioaccumulation in estuaries can be decoupled from sediment MeHg concentration, and that drivers of MeHg production and fate may vary within a small region.  相似文献

Summary  The southeast Australian coastally trapped disturbance (CTD) of 9–11 November 1982 that was previously studied by Holland and Leslie is re-visited. Additional observational data not considered by these authors and a numerical simulation using the Colorado State University Regional Atmospheric Modeling system (RAMS) are used for this purpose. Following initiation of the event on the south coast, mesoscale ridging propagated along the east coast to just north of Brisbane. Associated with the arrival of the event were a marked increase in surface pressure, drop in temperature and a shift and strengthening of the wind. While the simulation does not appear to capture the details of the boundary layer as well as one would like, it does represent the main features of the event, including the speed of propagation along the coast, reasonably well. Similar to the observed, the model event shows gravity current-like characteristics. The significance of topographic variability (e.g., large gap in the coastal mountains at the Hunter Valley) is considered. It is suggested that the topography and ambient stratification in southeastern Australia are less favourable for CTD occurrence than those in southern Africa and western North America where these systems have been extensively studied. Consequently, when CTD do occur in southeastern Australia, the less pronounced topography and weaker stratification may enable local effects to mask the CTD signal to some extent, thereby posing challenges in observation and forecasting. Abstract

Quaternary alluvial and colluvial sediments infill major river valleys and form alluvial fans and colluvium-filled bedrock depressions on the range fronts and within the Mount Lofty Ranges of southern Australia. A complex association of alluvial successions occurs in the Sellicks Creek drainage basin, as revealed from lithostratigraphy, physical landscape setting and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages. Correlation of OSL ages with the Marine Oxygen Isotope record reveals that the alluvial successions represent multiple episodes of alluvial sedimentation since the penultimate glaciation (Marine Isotope Stage 6; MIS 6). The successions include a penultimate glacial maximum alluvium (Taringa Formation; 160?±?15?ka; MIS 6), an unnamed alluvial succession (42?±?3.2?ka; MIS 3), a late last glacial colluvial succession within bedrock depressions (ca 15?ka; MIS 2) and a late last glacial alluvium (ca 15?ka; MIS 2) in the lowest, distal portion of Sellicks Creek. In addition, the Waldeila Formation, a Holocene alluvium (3.5?±?0.3?ka; MIS 1), and sediments deposited during a phase of Post-European Settlement Aggradation (PESA) are also identified. The age and spatial distribution of the red/brown successions, mapped as the Upper Pleistocene Pooraka Formation, directly relate to different topographic and tectonic settings. Neotectonic uplift locally enhanced erosion and sedimentation, while differences in drainage basin sizes along the margin of the ranges have influenced the timing and delivery of sediment in downstream locations. Close to the Willunga Fault Scarp at Sellicks Creek, sediments resembling the Pooraka Formation have yielded a pooled mean OSL age of 83.9?±?7?ka (MIS 5a) corroborating the previously identified extended time range for deposition of the formation. Elsewhere, within major river valleys, the Pooraka Formation was deposited during the last interglacial maximum (128–118?ka; MIS 5e). In general, alluviation occurred during interglacial and interstadial pluvial events, while erosion predominated during drier glacial episodes. In both cases, contemporaneous erosion and sedimentation continued to affect the landscape. For example, in the Sellicks Creek drainage basin, which lies across an actively uplifting fault zone, late glacial age sediments (MIS 2) occur within the ranges and near the distal margin of the alluvial fan complex. OSL dating of the alluvial successions reported in this paper highlights linkages between the terrestrial and marine environments in association with sea-level (base-level) and climatic perturbations. While the alluvial successions relate largely to climatically driven changes, especially in major river valleys, tectonics, eustasy, geomorphic setting and topography have influenced erosion and sedimentation, especially on steep-sloped alluvial fan environments.

The effects of injections of 17β-estradiol (E2) and Cd, on the distribution of Cd and the induction of metallothionein (MT) mRNA and vitellogenin mRNA was investigated. Bone and liver were the main organs accumulating Cd. However, E2 redirected the metal accumulation from the bone and liver to the gill, gut and muscle upon exposure to E2. Cd did not induce the hepatic MT mRNA levels in animals treated with E2. The VTG mRNA levels were also reduced following co-injection of E2 and Cd. However, the kidney responded to Cd exposure by upregulating MT mRNA even in the presence of E2 treatment. In the liver the reduced MT mRNA induction led to a redistribution of CD from MT to non-MT proteins. The toxicological significance of these alterations in Cd handling remains to be determined.  相似文献
