In July 1999, an at-sea experiment to measure the focus of a 3.5-kHz centered time-reversal mirror (TRM) was conducted in three different environments: an absorptive bottom, a reflective bottom, and a sloping bottom. The experiment included a preliminary exploration of using a TRM to generate binary-phase shift keying communication sequences in each of these environments. Broadside communication transmissions were also made, and single-source communications were simulated using the measured-channel response. A comparison of the results is made and time reversal is shown to be an effective approach for mitigating inter-symbol interference caused by channel multipath.  相似文献

99Technetium (99Tc) is a fission product of uranium-235 and plutonium-239 and poses a high environmental hazard due to its long half-life (t1/2 = 2.13 × 105 y), abundance in nuclear wastes, and environmental mobility under oxidizing conditions [i.e., Tc(VII)]. Under reducing conditions, Tc(VII) can be reduced to insoluble Tc(IV). Ferrous iron, either in aqueous form (Fe2+) or in mineral form [Fe(II)], has been used to reduce Tc(VII) to Tc(IV). However, the reactivity of Fe(II) from clay minerals, other than nontronite, toward immobilization of Tc(VII) and its role in retention of reduced Tc(IV) has not been investigated. In this study the reactivity of a suite of clay minerals toward Tc(VII) reduction and immobilization was evaluated. The clay minerals chosen for this study included five members in the smectite-illite (S-I) series, (montmorillonite, nontronite, rectorite, mixed layered I-S, and illite), chlorite, and palygorskite. Surface Fe-oxides were removed from these minerals with a modified dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) procedure. The total structural Fe content of these clay minerals, after surface Fe-oxide removal, ranged from 0.7% to 30.4% by weight, and the structural Fe(III)/Fe(total) ratio ranged from 45% to 98%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy results showed that after Fe oxide removal the clay minerals were free of Fe-oxides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that little dissolution occurred during the DCB treatment. Bioreduction experiments were performed in bicarbonate buffer (pH-7) with structural Fe(III) in the clay minerals as the sole electron acceptor, lactate as the sole electron donor, and Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 cells as a mediator. In select tubes, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfate (AQDS) was added as electron shuttle to facilitate electron transfer. In the S-I series, smectite (montmorillonite) was the most reducible (18% and 41% without and with AQDS, respectively) and illite the least (1% for both without and with AQDS). The extent and initial rate of bioreduction were positively correlated with the percent smectite in the S-I series (i.e., layer expandability). Fe(II) in the bioreduced clay minerals subsequently was used to reduce Tc(VII) to Tc(IV) in PIPES buffer. Similar to the trend of bioreduction, in the S-I series, reduced NAu-2 showed the highest reactivity toward Tc(VII), and reduced illite exhibited the least. The initial rate of Tc(VII) reduction, after normalization to clay and Fe(II) concentrations, was positively correlated with the percent smectite in the S-I series. Fe(II) in chlorite and palygorskite was also reactive toward Tc(VII) reduction. These data demonstrate that crystal chemical parameters (layer expandability, Fe and Fe(II) contents, and surface area, etc.) play important roles in controlling the extent and rate of bioreduction and the reactivity toward Tc(VII) reduction. Reduced Tc(IV) resides within clay mineral matrix, and this association could minimize any potential of reoxidation over long term.  相似文献

The formation of sdBs as well as the chemical composition of their atmospheres is still puzzling. While helium and other light elements are depleted relative to solar values, heavy elements are highly enriched. Diffusion processes in the hot, radiative atmosphere of these stars are the most likely explanation. Although several attempts have been made, it has not yet been possible to model all the observed features of sdB atmospheres. A drawback of most prior studies was the small sample size. We present a detailed abundance analysis of 139 sdBs. A general trend of enrichment was found with increasing temperature for most of the heavier elements. The lighter elements like carbon, oxygen and nitrogen are depleted and less affected by temperature. Although there is considerable scatter from one star to the other, the general abundance patterns in most sdBs are similar. An interplay between gravitational settling, radiative levitation and weak winds is most likely responsible. About 3% of the analysed stars show an enrichment in carbon and helium, which cannot be explained in the framework of diffusion alone. Nuclear processed material must have been transported to the surface somehow.  相似文献

Radial velocity curves have been measured for nine sdB stars from high resolution optical spectra and are found to be sinusoidal indicating that they are binary stars with circular orbits. Their periods range from ≈12 h to more than 8 days. The companions are invisible in optical light. Minimum companion masses are derived from the mass functions, assuming the mass of the sdB primary to be half a solar mass. We argue that the companions to UVO 1735+22, Feige 108, HD 188112, and HD 171858 are white dwarfs, since their (statistically) most likely mass is above ≈0.7M . Five of the systems have not been investigated before, for the others our results agree with previously published ones.  相似文献

A large fraction of the sdB stars reside in short period binaries. It is therefore clear that binary evolution plays an important role in the still unsolved problem of hot subdwarf formation. Here we present new results from different projects devoted to the analysis of sdBs in close binaries. The nature and masses of the unseen companions of 31 sdBs have been constrained by an analysis of high resolution spectra. In the course of this study candidate systems with massive compact companions have been discovered. The HYPERMUCHFUSS project aims at finding such systems making use of the huge spectral database of SDSS. A multi-site follow-up campaign of promising radial velocity variable sdBs started in 2009 and preliminary results are shown here. The most recent discovery of a substellar companion to the bright sdB HD?149382 may provide new evidence for the decisive role of low mass companions for sdB formation in general. A mysterious IR-excess has been detected, which may be caused by this otherwise invisible companion. Another low mass companion has been found to orbit the sdB star EGB?5 within 16.5 days. The space mission CoRoT is performing wide field and high precision photometry. First preliminary results from a spectroscopic survey of the COROT fields are also reported.  相似文献

We summarize recent results of quantitative spectral analyses using NLTE and metal line-blanketed LTE model atmospheres. Temperatures and gravities derived for hundreds of sdB stars are now available and allow us to investigate systematic uncertainties of T e ff, log g scales and to test the theory of stellar evolution and pulsations. Surface abundance patterns of about two dozen sdB stars are surprisingly homogenous. In particular the iron abundance is almost solar for most sdBs. We highlight one iron-deficient and three super metal-rich sdBs, a challenge to diffusion theory. sdB stars are slowly rotating stars unless they are in close binary systems, which is hard to understand if the sdB stars were formed in merger events. The only exception is the pulsator PG 1605+072 rotating at vsin i= 39 km/s. Signatures of stellar winds from sdB stars may have been found.  相似文献
