The steady-state population of bodies resulting from a collisional cascade depends on how material strength varies with size. We find a simple expression for the power-law index of the population, given a power law that describes how material strength varies with size. This result is extended to the case relevant for the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt, in which the material strength is described by 2 separate power laws—one for small bodies and one for larger bodies. We find that the power-law index of the small body population is unaffected by the strength law for the large bodies, and vice versa. Simple analytical expressions describe a wave that is superimposed on the large body population because of the transition between the two power laws describing the strength. These analytical results yield excellent agreement with a numerical simulation of collisional evolution. These results will help to interpret observations of the asteroids and KBOs, and constrain the strength properties of those objects. 相似文献

Using photoclinometry, topographic profiles across europan ridges have been produced. These profiles allow the identification of bulges in the terrain adjacent to the ridges. The bulges are assumed to have been produced by flexure of the elastic lithosphere due to the load of the ridges, which lie along cracks in the crust. The distance from the crack to these “fore-bulges” depends on the thickness of the elastic plate being flexed. Based on a survey of ridges in Galileo images with resolution <300 m/pixel, the thickness of the elastic lithosphere has been determined by this method at a wide variety of sites along the leading and trailing hemispheres of Europa. The average thickness is about 200 m. The elastic lithosphere underneath smooth dilational bands tends to be thicker than plains morphology, an effect that is pronounced at Thynia Linea and Astypalaea Linea. Among the ridges investigated here, more recent loading correlates with a thicker elastic lithosphere, which may either reflect an intrinsically thicker layer, or less viscous relaxation over the shorter time period. 相似文献

Diffuse band shapes in both extinction and polarization are calculated for interstellar coremantle particles for varying size distributions of mantle thickness. It is shown that no matter whether the source of the bands is in the silicate cores or the accreted icy mantles the polarization shapes are highly asymmetric for all mantel thicknesses. The extinction band shapes are significantly less asymmetric although the effect is clearly present. Hawaiian volcanoes characteristically have but few of the many types of minerals found in incrustations of other volcanic areas. In Hawaii sulfates resulting from air oxidation of volatiles predominate, and fluorides produced during rock alteration by fumarolic gases are prominent. Halides are generally found where reducing conditions exist in fumaroles and lava lake drill holes. The most common mineral types are sulfur, opaline silica, gypsum, ralstonite, and thenardite. Minerals from the same deposit are found to vary markedly in the content of the less abundant components. Condensates from vapor issuing from fumaroles show little quantitative relationship in component content to incrustations deposited at the same fumaroles. It is believed that an energetically favorable isomorphic substitution of some elements in the crystal lattice of a depositing mineral may lead to the build-up of a high concentration of an element from a lean vapor. Equilibrium calculations applied to condensate studies give a good quantitative approximation to the concentrations of the elements found in natural systems, but when applied to incrustations they serve only to indicate general compositional relations. Laboratory studies have shown the important role of chlorides in metal transfer in the gas phase in high-temperature aqueous systems, but only in the absence of oxygen. Geomorphic, stratigraphic, geotechnical, and biogeographic evidence indicate that failure of a Pleistocene ice dam between 15.5 and 26 ka generated a megaflood from Glacial Lake Atna down the Matanuska Valley. While it has long been recognized that Lake Atna occupied ≥ 9000 km2 of south-central Alaska's Copper River Basin, little attention has focused on the lake's discharge locations and behaviors. Digital elevation model and geomorphic analyses suggest that progressive lowering of the lake level by decanting over spillways exposed during glacial retreat led to sequential discharges down the Matanuska, Susitna, Tok, and Copper river valleys. Lake Atna's size, ∼ 50 ka duration, and sequential connection to four major drainages likely made it a regionally important late Pleistocene freshwater refugium. We estimate a catastrophic Matanuska megaflood would have released 500–1400 km3 at a maximum rate of ≥ 3 × 106 m3 s− 1. Volumes for the other outlets ranged from 200 to 2600 km3 and estimated maximum discharges ranged from 0.8 to 11.3 × 106 m3 s− 1, making Lake Atna a serial generator of some of the largest known freshwater megafloods. 相似文献

Abstract— From 2001 June 17 to 25, we held the first international workshop in Erice, Italy, dedicated to the determination of geological and geophysical properties of near‐Earth objects (NEOs). The goal was to develop a roadmap for determining the physical and chemical properties of NEOs in the coming decades to meet the scientific requirements for development of Earth collision avoidance technology. We identified many properties that are desired, but four measurements are needed most critically for any potentially hazardous NEO: (1) its mass, (2) its mass distribution, (3) its material strengths, and (4) its internal structure. Global (whole‐body) properties, such as material strengths and internal structure, can be determined best from the analyses of permeating waves: artificially initiated seismology and multifrequency reflection and transmission radio tomography. Seismology provides the best geophysical (material strengths) data of NEOs composed of consolidated materials while radio tomography provides the best geological data (e.g., the state of fracture) of electrically nonconducting media. Thus, the two methods are complementary: seismology is most suitable for stony and metallic asteroids, while radio tomography is most appropriate for comet nuclei and carbonaceous asteroids. The three main conclusions are (1) remote sensing for physical characterization should be increased, (2) several dedicated NEO missions should be prepared for geophysical and geological investigations, and (3) that it is prudent to develop and prove the technology to make geophysical measurements on NEOs now. 相似文献

In the absence of any damping mechanism, a shepherd satellite would force oscillations in the motion of a ring particle (relative to circular motion) that are symmetrical with respect to the encounter geometry. No net torque would be exerted by the satellite on the rings. Only in the presence of some damping mechanism (such as density wave propagation or a dissipative medium) can a particle's response lag so as to provide the asymmetry that permits a torque. Remarkably, the standard formula for the confining torque exerted by a sheperd satellite seems to be independent of damping. Moreover, many heuristic derivations of the formula tend to obscure the role of damping. In fact, the torque on any given particle does depend on the degree of damping, but that dependence disappears when the torque is averaged over a range of orbits that span resonances if the degree of damping is within a certain range. If damping is too weak or too strong, the torque can be much less than is given by the standard formula. 相似文献
