Pedogenic calcretes are closely associated with Pliocene to Holocene wind-worked deposits of volcanic ash in the Olduvai and Ndolanya Beds of northern Tanzania. The typical profile with calcrete consists of an unconsolidated sediment layer, an underlying laminar calcrete, and a lowermost massive calcrete. The laminar calcrete is a relatively pure limestone, whereas massive calcrete is aeolian tuff cemented and replaced by calcite. An Olduvai calcrete profile can develop to a mature stage in only a few thousand years. Carbonatite ash was the dominant source for most of the calcite in the calcretes. Replacement was a major process in formation of the massive calcretes, and oolitic textures have resulted from micrite replacing pelletoid clay coatings around sand grains. Phillipsite and possible other zeolites were extensively replaced in the massive calcretes. Replacement of clay by micrite in the Olduvai calcretes is accompanied by dissolution or leaching of phengitic illite and the formation of clay approaching the composition of halloysite or kaolinite. In the upper calcrete of the Ndolanya Beds, montmorillonite was altered to a kaolinite-type mineral and to dioctahedral chlorite. Authigenic dolomite, zeolite, and dawsonite in the Olduvai calcretes probably received at least some of their components from replaced materials.  相似文献

In recent years, the use of wide source arrays in marine seismic surveys has been a topic of interest in the seismic industry. Although one motivation for wide arrays is to get more guns in a source array without increasing the in-line array dimension, wide arrays can also provide the benefit of suppressing side-scattered energy. Comparisons of common midpoint (CMP) stacks of data acquired offshore Washington and Alaska with wide and conventional-width source arrays, however, show only small and sometimes inconsistent differences. These data were acquired in areas where side-scattered energy is a problem. Comparisons of pre-stack data, however, show substantial differences between the wide and conventional source array data. The disparity between the stacked and prestack data is explained by analysing the effective suppression of back-scattered energy by CMP stacking. Energy reflected from scatterer positions broadside to a given CMP location has a lower stacking velocity than that of the primary reflection events. Thus, CMP stacking attenuates the side-scattered energy. In both survey areas the action of CMP stacking was so powerful in suppressing the broadside energy that the additional action of the wide array was inconsequential in the final stacked sections. In other areas, where the scattering velocity is comparable to the primary stacking velocity, wide arrays could provide considerable advantage. Even though CMP stacked data from wide and conventional-width arrays may appear similar, the reduced amount of side-scattered energy in wide-array prestack data may provide a benefit for data dependent processes such as predictive deconvolution and velocity analysis. However, wide arrays cannot be used indiscriminately because they can degrade cross-dipping primary events. They should be considered primarily as a special tool for attacking severe source-generated noise from back-scattered waves in areas where the action of CMP stacking is insufficient.  相似文献

Vegetation history of a polygonal peatland, northern, Yukon   总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1  
Pollen, macrofossils and matrix composition are described for a 221 cm core from a polygonal peatland overlying a late-Wisconsin lakebed. A hydroseral succession of wetland communities occurred at the site, and included a submerged assemblage with Chara , a Carex aquatilis - Eleocharis marsh, a fen, and finally a Sphagnum - Ledum bog. A transition about 9,600 B.P. to a wetter S. balticum - Andromeda carpet is attributed to formation of permaforst and polygonal ice wedges. This community, sometimes with S. compactum and Chamaedaphne , prevailed until about 3,000 B.P. when the polygon became high centered, and peat growth declined. Peat growth rate is determined from 11 14C dates, and is used to calculate pollen influx. Apparent periodic oscillations every 2,000 years, in total influx, are not accepted as sufficient evidence of treeline fluctuations.  相似文献

Integrated fluvial sequence stratigraphic and palaeosol analysis can be used to better reconstruct depositional systems, but these approaches have not been combined to examine halokinetic minibasins. This study characterizes the temporal and spatial patterns of lithofacies and palaeosols in a sequence stratigraphic framework to reconstruct a model of minibasin evolution and identify halokinetic influences on fluvial deposition. This research documents fluvial cycles and stratigraphic hierarchy, palaeosol maturity and apparent sediment accumulation rates in the Chinle Formation within the Big Bend minibasin. This study also uses palaeosols to help identify fluvial aggradational cycle (FAC) sets. The Chinle is divided into two hectometre‐scale (102 m) fluvial sequences, six decametre‐scale (101 m) FAC sets, and variable numbers of metre‐scale FACs depending on proximity to the minibasin. Ten pedotypes representing 225 palaeosol profiles are recognized. The pedotypes include palaeosols similar to modern Entisols, Inceptisols, Aridisols, Vertisols and Alfisols. A maturity index (1–5) is assigned to each pedotype to assess its variability in palaeosol development. Estimated palaeosol development time is used to approximate apparent sediment accumulation rates. Increased subsidence resulted in a greater number and thicker FACs, thicker FAC sets and fluvial sequence sections, and lithofacies associations reflecting more rapid sedimentation along the minibasin axis. Palaeocurrent indicators converge towards the minibasin axis and indicate that it formed and drifted through time. Relative palaeosol maturity is inversely related to stratal thickness, and decreases towards the minibasin where episodic burial by fluvial sediment was more frequent. Metre‐scale FACs are most abundant towards the minibasin axis, and locally have Entisols and Inceptisols developed upon their upper boundaries reflecting increased sediment accumulation rates. Areas outside the minibasin are characterized by fewer FACs that are associated with more mature palaeosols. Palaeosol‐derived apparent sediment accumulation rates are as much as two orders of magnitude greater within the minibasin than in marginal areas. The combined stratigraphic, palaeocurrent and palaeosol evidence is used to develop a model for the evolution of the Big Bend minibasin that illustrates the halokinetic affect on fluvial and landscape processes.  相似文献

Infrared spectroscopy has been calibrated to provide a preciseand accurate method for determining the concentrations of molecularwater and hydroxyl groups in hydrous albitic glasses. At totalwater contents less than 4 wt.%, most of the water is dissolvedas hydroxyl groups; at higher total water contents, molecularwater becomes the dominant species. For total water contentsabove 4 wt.%, the amount of water dissolved as hydroxyl groupsis nearly constant at about 2 wt.% and additional water is incorporatedas molecular water. These trends in the concentrations of theH-bearing species are similar to those observed in other silicateglasses using infrared and NMR spectroscopies. The ratio ofmolecular water to hydroxyl groups at a given total water contentis independent of the pressure and only weakly dependent onthe temperature of equilibration. Molecular water and hydroxyl group concentrations in glassesprovide constraints on the dissolution mechanisms of water insilicate liquids. Several mixing models involving homogeneousequilibria of the form H2O+O2– = 2OH among meltspecies in albitic melts have been developed. These models canaccount for the measured species concentrations if the effectsof non-ideal behavior or mixing of polymerized units are included,or by allowing for several different anhydrous species. We used two thermodynamic models of hydrous albitic melts tocalculate phase equilibria. The first assumes that Henry's lawholds for molecular water in albitic liquids; i.e. that theactivity of molecular water in the melt is proportional to itsmole fraction as determined by infrared spectroscopy. The seconddescribes the speciation and thermodynamics of hydrous albiticmelts using the formalism of a strictly regular solution. Thesemodels can account reasonably well for the position of the vapor-saturatedsolidus of high albite and the pressure and temperature dependenceof the solubility of water in albitic melts. To the extent thatthese models are successful, our approach provides a directlink between measured species concentrations in hydrous albiticglasses and the macroscopic thermodyn amic properties of theNaAlSi3O8-H2O system.  相似文献

In this article, we discuss how two interpretations of vulnerability in the climate change literature are manifestations of different discourses and framings of the climate change problem. The two differing interpretations, conceptualized here as ‘outcome vulnerability’ and ‘contextual vulnerability’, are linked respectively to a scientific framing and a human-security framing. Each framing prioritizes the production of different types of knowledge, and emphasizes different types of policy responses to climate change. Nevertheless, studies are seldom explicit about the interpretation that they use. We present a diagnostic tool for distinguishing the two interpretations of vulnerability and use this tool to illustrate the practical consequences that interpretations of vulnerability have for climate change policy and responses in Mozambique. We argue that because the two interpretations are rooted in different discourses and differ fundamentally in their conceptualization of the character and causes of vulnerability, they cannot be integrated into one common framework. Instead, it should be recognized that the two interpretations represent complementary approaches to the climate change issue. We point out that the human-security framing of climate change has been far less visible in formal, international scientific and policy debates, and addressing this imbalance would broaden the scope of adaptation policies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Two trend surface fitting techniques, the use of bi-cubic splines and multiquadric analysis, have been applied to the determination of areal rainfall. On two mathematically defined test surfaces, the methods were applied using gridded data; the bi-cubic splines gave the better results. For non-gridded data, selected and random points, the multiquadric analysis gives satisfactory values. With real catchment and storm data, multiquadric analysis is shown to be a potentially very useful and flexible method for determining areal rainfall.  相似文献

Isolated carbonate platforms occur throughout geological history, and commonly exhibit considerable spatial variability. To evaluate the controls on the nature of sediment accumulation across the expansive, shallow platform tops, this study systematically compares and contrasts patterns in surface sediments from several shallow (<10 m) Holocene Bahamian examples. Remote‐sensing data, field observations, petrographic characterization and quantitative grain‐size analyses reveal the spatial patterns of sediment accumulation on Crooked–Acklins Platform and the Berry Islands Bank. Integration of these data with synoptic observations of waves, tides and currents, along with regional geochemical data, provides a means to explore the factors that influence platform‐scale sedimentary patterns. These data illustrate that the platform interiors of both Crooked–Acklins Platform and Berry Islands Bank are blanketed with medium to coarse sand size sediment. Peloids are most common in the interior of Crooked–Acklins Platform, whereas the Berry Islands Bank includes more abundant composite grains. In both areas, very little mud is present, with surface sediments averaging <2% mud. Comparison of these results with published data from Little Bahama Bank, Great Bahama Bank and Caicos Platform suggest that, contrary to previous interpretations, the presence of open margins and/or brisk winds are not necessary for the occurrence of a platform top with little mud. Although the muddy sediment fraction of the interior can be suspended by elevated wave energy, wind‐generated current speeds in protected platform interiors are relatively low. Instead, in parts of the platform interiors, transport and winnowing of fines is enhanced greatly by tidal currents, which carry suspended sediments off the shallow platforms, even if shielded by islands. Beyond physical influences, however, regional geochemical compilations suggest that the Bahamian tides supply highly supersaturated waters rich in dissolved oxygen to these platform interiors. This exchange is interpreted to facilitate favourable conditions for calcium carbonate precipitation in the form of ooids, marine cements and hardened peloids across vast expanses of the platform interiors. Such fundamental controls on Holocene platform‐scale sediment dynamics are likely to have influenced carbonate systems through the geological record.  相似文献
