A large-scale boulder beach close to a tidal glacier was examined at Eqip Sermia, Disko Bugt, West Greenland, in 1989. Photographs from 1912 and 1929 show an advance of the glacier of more than 1.5 km beyond its present location. Lateral and terminal moraines were formed in the sea, and subaerial parts and their positions can be detected from the old photographs. Today the outermost part of this moraine system has disappeared totally, except for about 1 km of the lateral moraine. The distal 300 m of the still existing moraine apparently has been displaced and transformed into a shape that, in plan view and cross-section, resembles a barrier spit. The material of the boulder beach consists mainly of coarse clasts with boulders of 1 m to more than 1.5 m in diameter. Distributions of clast sizes and sediment structures on the barrier surface also suggest wave and overwash dynamics as being the responsible agents. Located in the inner part of a fiord system, the fetches are restricted and thus normal waves are very small. Large waves generated by glacier calving, and/or sea-ice action, are therefore the only processes that can explain the geomorphology and clast distribution of this coastal feature.  相似文献

Recent geomorphological and sedimentological investigation of the raised beach ridge plain on Anholt in the Kattegat Sea, Denmark, has demonstrated how these deposits, when combined with Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating, can provide information about past changes in relative sea level. The southwest–northeast trending plain is divided into three topographic levels, one of which has been surveyed using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR). Samples retrieved from the survey line indicate that the initial part of the beach ridge plain formed about 7700 years ago in response to a mid-Holocene Littorina transgression. The raised marine deposits document a subsequent rise in relative sea level of about 9 m, and OSL dates indicate that this transgression took place about 6650 years ago. The flooding of the Kattegat Sea 7700 years ago might possibly be related to a rapid global sea-level rise peaking around 7500 years ago.  相似文献

Organic biomarker and nannofossil assemblages are used in combination with sedimentary petrology to identify the role of diagenesis for the formation of a rhythmic calcareous succession. A record from the Early Pliocene of the Maldives (Ocean Drilling Program, ODP Leg 115) is presented containing precession and eccentricity cycles expressed as variable aragonite content. Additional sub‐Milankovitch cycles are caused by rhythmic precipitation of calcite cement in the lower part of the interval. Comparison with palaeo‐productivity indicators (nannofossils, chlorin, total organic carbon) suggests that cementation occurs preferentially in intervals characterized by increasing or decreasing productivity. The coupled variability in productivity and carbonate diagenesis is attributed to the effect of organic matter degradation in the sediment. The observed combination of primary and diagenetic factors hampers the interpretation of the cyclicity on Milankovitch and sub‐Milankovitch scales. Diagenetically stable proxies for palaeo‐productivity, such as nannofossil assemblage data, were used to distinguish between palaeoclimate and diagenetic influences.  相似文献

Re-examination of the Skaergaard intrusion in the context ofits regional setting, combined with new data from explorationdrilling, has resulted in a revised structural model for theintrusion. It is modelled as an irregular box, c. 11 km fromnorth to south, up to 8 km from east to west, and 3·4–4km from the lower to the upper contact. The walls of the intrusionare inferred to follow pre-existing and penecontemporaneoussteep faults, and the floor and roof seem largely controlledby bedding planes in the host sediments and lavas, similar toregional sills. The suggested shape and volume are in agreementwith published gravimetric modelling. Crystallization alongall margins of the intrusion concentrated the evolving meltin the upper, central part of the intrusion, best visualizedas an ‘onion-skin’ structure inside the box. Thetotal volume is estimated to c. 280 ± 23 km3, of which13·7% are referred to the Upper Border Series (UBS),16·4% to the Marginal Border Series (MBS) and 69·9%to the Layered Series (LS). In the LS, the Lower Zone (LZ) isestimated to constitute 66·8%, the Middle Zone (MZ) 13·5%and the Upper Zone (UZ) 19·7%. The new volume relationshipsprovide a mass balance estimate of the major and trace elementbulk composition of the intrusion. The parental magma to theSkaergaard intrusion is similar to high-Ti East Greenland tholeiiticplateau basalts with Mg number c. 0.45. The intrusion representsthe solidification of contemporary plateau basalt magma trappedand crystallized under closed-system conditions in a crustalreservoir at the developing East Greenland continental margin. The Lower Jurassic erg (aeolian sand sea) deposits of the Wingate Sandstone on the Colorado Plateau are beautifully exposed near Many Farms, Arizona. These 3-D outcrops allow a detailed study of structures and sequenses in the erg body. The erg sequence comprises chiefly oblique dune deposits. The dune facies are in most cases characterized by a well-developed tripartite upbuilding. Each dune coset contains unusually thick and intricate bottomsets, medial low-angle dipping toesets, and upper steeply dipping foresets. The foresets reveal significant across-crest transport of sand and dip within a narrow range of directions towards the ESE. The bottomset beds are composed of compound cross-bedding that documents strong along-crest transport towards the SSW, whereas the toeset beds reveal upslope, downslope, and along-crest transport of sand. The ancient dunes apparently formed in a directionally varying wind flow with prevailing winds (early summer) from the NW and periodic strong winds (late summer) from the SW. The dunes were oblique not only to seasonal transport directions, but also to the resultant annual transport direction and dune migration direction. This was caused by the interaction of the dune system with the primary winds which resulted in secondary airflow and significant along-crest transport of sand. The erg deposits at Many Farms are separated by a number of super bounding surfaces suggesting several episodes of erg formation and destruction. The initial erg system was dominated by transverse dunes, but overlying ergs only contained oblique dunes. All erg systems were bounded to the SW by wide regions of erg margin environments in which aeolian sand sheet, fluvial, and lacustrine facies were deposited. Even though fluvial deposits are absent from the main part of the sequence at the study area, the effects of this system are reflected within the erg deposits at Many Farms.  相似文献

The Karstryggen area of eastern Greenland represents the western edge of sedimentation in the Jameson Land Basin, an arm of the northern Zechstein seaway. Upper Permian strata of this area were deposited as two major sequences. The first marine incursion transgressed largely peneplaned Lower Permian strata and deposited thin, paralic conglomerates, sandstones and shales (the Huledal Formation) followed by a thick package of carbonates and evaporites (the Karstryggen Formation). Although the Karstryggen Formation represents the transgressive maximum of this sequence, it contains only marginal or restricted marine strata, including micritic, stromatolitic and peloidal carbonates and thick, but localized, bedded gypsum deposits. These lithofacies indicate that relatively arid climates prevailed in this basin, as in most of the Zechstein region. A major regression, associated with a change to a more humid climate, terminated Karstryggen sedimentation. Pre-existing evaporites and carbonates underwent diagenetic alteration, including widespread calcitization and dissolution of gypsum. More importantly, topographic relief in excess of 120 m was generated by fluvial drainage systems and karstic sinkholes. A second marine incursion, accompanied by a return to a semi-arid climate, drowned this high relief topography, producing a complex sequence of strata (the Wegener Halvø Formation) in which sedimentation was greatly influenced by the rugged underlying terrain. Marine cemented algal-molluscan grainstones draped pre-existing palaeotopography during the initial stages of flooding. Continued drowning led to differential sedimentation on ‘highs’ and in ‘lows’. Oolitic and bryozoan-brachiopod grainstones formed as shoals on the crests of most prominences, whereas shales, conglomeratic debris flows, evaporites, or oolitic turbidites were deposited in the lows. More restricted sedimentation took place in the westernmost areas which lay closest to the mainland shoreline and were situated to the west of a palaeotopographic ridge. There, oolitic, stromatolitic and evaporitic strata were deposited under hypersaline conditions indicative of a return to more arid climatic conditions. Three subcycles mark smaller scale relative changes of sea level that occurred during deposition of the Wegener Halvø Formation; they are delimited by regional surfaces with moderate relief (5–20 m) developed during subaerial exposure. Widespread diagenetic changes, including leaching of aragonitic grains, dissolution/collapse brecciation of evaporites and meteoric calcite cementation, occurred in association with these smaller scale sequence boundaries, again reflecting climatic oscillations. Relative sea level fluctuations, coupled with regional climate changes, played a dominant role in determining both depositional and diagenetic relations in these strata. These features undoubtedly extend into subsurface parts of this basin as well as into yet unexplored areas of the northern Zechstein Basin and Barents Shelf, and may have economic significance for the localization of hydrocarbons.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Permian aeolian sediments on the island of Arran are divisible into dune (including draa) and interdune deposits. Both types display a distinctive and unusually wide variation in grain size. The dominant features of the dune deposits are grainfall lamination, sandflow lamination, and inverse graded lamination associated with ripple-form lamination and normal graded lamination. The flat-lying aeolian interdune deposits are characterised by granule and sand ripples, horizontal lamination in coarse sand and granules, plane bed lamination and inverse graded lamination. Associated structures include ripple-form lamination and deflation lags. Three types of trace fossil associated with completely bioturbated horizons occur in some low-angle dune and interdune deposits.
The aeolian facies interfinger with alluvial fan deposits giving rise to three recognizable facies belts. Marginal aeolian deposits are associated with fluvial conglomerates and are dominated by interdune deposits and occasionally very thin barchan deposits (set height 3-37 cm). Intermediate aeolian deposits are characterized by interbedded crescentic dune, small draa (dune set height 5 cm-4.5 m) and interdune deposits, and rare fluvial and lake sediments. Basinal aeolian deposits are dominated by draa deposits (dune set height 0.2-28 m) associated with rare interdune sediments. Transverse dunes and draas were moved by north-eastern palaeowinds towards the foot of the alluvial fans. The aeolian sediments were deposited in a fault-bounded desert basin.  相似文献

A pre-Holocene marine level is found at 109 m a.s.1. on Hopen. Fragments of Mya truncata and Hiatella arctica occurring on a raised coastal spit at that altitude have been radiocarbon dated to >45,000 BP. The amino acid epimerization of these shells, a clearly mixed sample, correlates with samples from Kongsøya that are of Eemian or Early Weichselian age (alloisoleucine/isoleucine ratios, hydrolysed fraction, between 0.084 and 0.213). No direct evidence, such as striations or roche moutonées, of overriding glacier ice has been found, and no erratics were found above the pre-Holocene marine limit. The existing Holocene shoreline displacement curve, with its upper limit at 60 m a.s.1., is supported by four new radiocarbon dates.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to link physical sediment parameters to biological parameters by an equation of state, which describes how the given variables interact in biologically active deposits from accumulation areas, i.e. lake areas where fine material is being continuously deposited. In the model the following parameters are utilized: sediment depth, rate of deposition, degree of compaction, bulk density, water content, net biotransport, upward biotransport, downward biotransport, and substrate decomposition. The equation of state has been empirically tested with data from Lake Ekoln and Lake Vänern, Sweden. The model enables determinations of age frequency distributions for arbitrary sediment layers, and it has been shown that, for example, the sediment layer 12-13 cm in Lake Ekoln has a median age of 15.3 years and that the deposits from the median year only constitutes about 15% of the total amount of material in this particular sediment layer. The spread due to bioturbation is considerable and the range at this sediment layer is 22 years. A mechanism to explain secondary lamination is introduced and discussed in the light of the results from the model.  相似文献
