A 6.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred on January 24, 2020, has been effective in Turkey’s eastern regions. The earthquake, with recorded peak ground acceleration (PGA) value of 0.292 g, caused the destruction or heavy damage of buildings, especially in the city center of Elaz?? province. The purpose of this paper was to share the results of detailed investigation in the earthquake-stricken area. Additionally, the causes of damages and failures observed in the buildings were compared to those that had occurred in previous earthquakes in Turkey. In this study, the damages observed in especially RC buildings as well as in masonry and rural buildings were summarized, the lessons learned were evaluated, and the results were interpreted with reference to Turkish earthquake codes. In the study, it was particularly emphasized why the building stock underwent such damage even though the buildings were exposed to earthquake acceleration well below the design acceleration values.

Seismic risk assessment of buildings in Izmir,Turkey   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Izmir, the third largest city and a major economic center in Turkey, has more than three million residents and half million buildings. In this study, the seismic risk in reinforced concrete buildings that dominate the building inventory in Izmir is investigated through multiple approaches. Five typical reinforced concrete buildings were designed, modeled and assessed for seismic vulnerability. The sample structures represent typical existing reinforced concrete hospital, school, public, and residential buildings in Izmir. The seismic assessments of the considered structures indicate that they are vulnerable to damage during expected future earthquakes.  相似文献

In this study, a solution model is proposed to obtain input ground motion datasets compatible with given design spectra based on meta-heuristic harmony search algorithm. The utility of the solution model is demonstrated by generating ground motion datasets matching the Eurocode-8 design spectra for different soil types out of an extensive database of recorded motions. A total of 352 records are selected from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Center (PEER) Strong Motion Database based on magnitude, distance, and site conditions to form the original ground motion domain. Then, the proposed harmony search based solution algorithm is applied on the pre-selected 352 time-series to obtain the ground motion record sets compatible with design spectra. The results demonstrate that the proposed HS based solution model provides an efficient way to develop input ground motion record sets that are consistent with code-based design spectra.  相似文献

Earthquake disaster risk assessment and evaluation for Turkey   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Turkey is the one country in which 90% of the buildings are subject to the risk of earthquake disaster. Recent earthquakes revealed that Turkey’s present residential reinforced-concrete constructions are insufficient in earthquake resistance. Many of the buildings which collapsed or were severely damaged have been rehabilitated by applying simple methods, whose adequacy is questionable. As in Japan and the United States, Turkey’s earthquake assessment studies have increased, especially after earthquakes in 1999, In US, several methodologies and standards, such as Hazard-US (HAZUS) and Applied Technology Council (ATC) 13-20-21 and 156, provide comprehensive earthquake loss estimation methodology for post-earthquake assessment. This paper provides post-earthquake assessment and disaster management for Turkey. The main aim of the post-earthquake assessment discussed is to evaluate loss and estimate damage through disaster management approach. Classification criteria for damage are essential to determine the situation after an earthquake in both the short and long terms. The methodology includes probabilistic-based analysis, which considers the magnitude of Ms ≥ 5.0 earthquakes between 1900 and 2005, for determining the probabilistic seismic hazard for Turkey.  相似文献

A screening of natural radioactivity content has been carried out in thermal water samples collected from surrounding of Central Anatolia, Turkey. The concentration levels of gross alpha and beta of 19 different samples has been determined using the low background gas-flow proportional counter. The measured gross alpha and beta activities in waters range from 0.11 to 16 Bq/L and 0.10 to 16.9 Bq/L, respectively. The measured values of gross alpha and beta concentrations are compared to previous studies in the literature and recommend WHO guideline activity concentration. The data resulting from the measurement have been statistically analyzed.  相似文献

Sand and dust storms are causing hazards and problems in aviation as well as the dangers and distresses they cause on living things. The low meteorological visibility, the presence of strong winds with gust, and the transport of dust and sand particles by the wind are dangerous on landing and departure of aircrafts, and even on planes that are parked. The main aim of the study is to examine the meteorological conditions causing the dust storm that took place in the Arabian Peninsula on February 28, 2009, and to determine the source of dust caused dust storm, sand storm, blown sand, and blown dust at the airports. Within the scope of the study, aviation routine weather report (METAR) and aviation selected special weather report (SPECI) reports have been assessed at many airports over Arabian Peninsula (AP), the northern part of the AP and North Africa. As model outputs; NCEP–DOE Reanalysis 2 data, BSC–DREAM8B, and HYSPLIT model were used. In the satellite images; METEOSAT MSG dust RGB images, MODIS, and Kalpana-1 data were used. According to obtained results, dust storms were detected in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (UAE). At Al-Ahsa Airport in Saudi Arabia, the lowest visibility measured on February 28, 2009, dropping to 200 m, which was dominated by blowing sand. The source region of the dust observed at Dubai Airport in UAE is the eastern regions of the Rub’al Khali Desert located between Saudi Arabia, Oman, and UAE.  相似文献

Jurassic coals, coaly shales, shales and claystones from the Eastern Pontides in NE Turkey have been investigated using microscopical, petrophysical and detailed organic geochemical methods in order to determine their catagenetic stage, to reveal the composition of the organic matter and to discuss the depositional environment. The Liassic–Dogger period in the Eastern Pontides was characterised by the presence of a rift system which resulted in rock units of very variable lithology and facies. Coal seams, ranging from a few centimetres to several decimetres and intercalated with shales, claystones and sandstones occur within the basal part (the Aggi Formation) as well as in the uppermost part (the Hamurkesen Formation) of the rift deposits. All coal seams investigated are at a catagenetic maturation stage corresponding to subbituminous B up to low volatile bituminous ranks. They represent a depositional environment of short-lived swamp areas with intense aerobic reworking of the higher plant detritus by heterotrophic bacteria, but with possible anaerobic microenvironments at deeper levels. At least some coal seams were influenced temporarily by marine ingressions. Most samples are impure humic coals with highly variable chemical compositions as indicated by the broad range of their hydrogen contents. This variation in hydrogen content is partly attributed to variable contributions of algal material. On the other side, considering several analytical results, the hydrogen variation is primarily due to bacterial reworking that affected the composition of the organic matter to variable extent and resulted especially in an enrichment of bacterial lipids. Bacterial reworking by an active microbial community within the upper layer of the peat swamp is inferred from elevated concentrations of iso-alkanes even exceeding those of the corresponding n-alkanes in several samples which, to the best of our knowledge, have not been observed with coals before.  相似文献

The concentrations and distribution of natural and artificial radionuclides in sediment and water samples collected from Fırtına River in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey were investigated with an aim of evaluating the environmental radioactivity and radiation hazard. Natural gross α and gross β activities were determined for 21 different water samples, and the activity concentrations were obtained for 226Ra, 214Pb, 214Bi, 228Ac, 208Tl, 40K and 137Cs in 20 different sediment samples. The obtained results showed that natural gross α and gross β activity concentrations in water samples range from 12.4 ± 3.4 to 66.2 ± 9.2 mBq l−1 and from 27.9 ± 3.3 to 133.3 ± 4.1 mBq l−1, respectively. The mean activity concentrations were 32.6 ± 3.8 mBq l−1 for gross α and 69.9 ± 4.4 mBq l−1 for gross β. Generally, the gross β activities were higher than the corresponding gross α activities. The average concentrations of 238U and 232Th daughter products vary from 11 to 167 Bq kg−1 and from 16 to 107 Bq kg−1, respectively. The concentrations of 40K and 137Cs vary from 51 to 1,605 Bq kg−1 and from 0.8 to 42 Bq kg−1, respectively. Sediment characterization was also investigated using grain size, thin section and XRD analysis.  相似文献

In this study, organic matter content, type and maturity as well as some petrographic and physical characteristics of the Jurassic coals exposed in the eastern Taurus were investigated and their depositional environments were interpreted. The total organic carbon (TOC) contents of coals in the Feke–Akkaya, Kozan–Gedikli and Kozan–Kizilinc areas are 24.54, 66.78 and 49.15%, respectively. The Feke–Akkaya and Kozan–Kizilinc coals have low Hydrogen Index (HI) values while the Kozan–Gedikli coals show moderate HI values. All coal samples display very low Oxygen Index (OI) values. The Kozan–Gedikli coals contain Type II organic matter (OM), the Feke–Akkaya coals contain a mixture of type II and type III OM; and the Kozan–Kizilinc coals are composed of Type III OM. Sterane distribution was calculated as C27 > C29 > C28 from the m/z 217 mass chromatogram for all coal samples.Tmax values for the Feke–Akkaya, Kozan–Gedikli and Kozan–Kizilinc coals are 439, 412 and 427 °C. Vitrinite reflectance values (%Ro) for the Feke–Akkaya and Kozan–Kizilinc coal samples were measured as 0.65 and 0.51 and these values reveal that the Feke–Akkaya and Kozan–Kizilinc coals are at subbituminous A or high volatile C bituminous coal stage. On the basis of biomarker maturity parameters, these coals have a low maturity. The pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios for the Feke–Akkaya, Kozan–Gedikli and Kozan–Kizilinc coals are 1.53, 1.13 and 1.25, respectively. In addition, all coals show a homohopane distribution which is dominated by low carbon numbers, and C35 homohopane index is very low for all coal samples. All these features may indicate that these coals were deposited in a suboxic environment. The high sterane/hopane ratios with high concentrations of steranes, low Pr/Ph ratios and C25/C26 tricyclic ratios > 1 may indicate that these coals formed in a swamp environment were temporarily influenced by marine conditions.  相似文献
