In this paper, the standard model of X-ray binaries was used in synthesizing light-curves of eclipsing X-ray binaries. Two moderated approaches were introduced in this regard; the first concerns the method of solution of the Roche Model's basic equation, where, instead of using series solutions as developed by Kopal, the Newton-Raphson method was utilized to solve it, after changing it into an eighth-degree polynomial equation, which proved to be more precise, and yet, more efficient. The second approach concerns the development of a new phenomenological model to account for X-ray reflection, and heating of the optical star. Our model was successfully applied to HZ-Her/Her X-1. The properties of OH megamaser galaxies in the x-ray region are discussed. Observational data from the XMM-Newton x-ray satellite are presented for three megamasers, IRAS 01418+1651, IRAS 11010+4107, and IRAS 13218+0552. Based on a sample of OH megamaser galaxies it is shown that the x-ray and OH emission are closely coupled. Megamaser emission also correlates with the column density of the medium and the OH emissivity increases as the square of the column density. The results of this study indicate that in OH megamaser galaxies an active nucleus, x-ray heating of molecules, and saturation of the maser emission can play an important role. Fresh water availability has recently become a serious concern in the Italian Apennines, as various activities rely on a predictable supply. Along the ridge between Scansano and Magliano in Toscana, in southern Tuscany, the situation is further complicated by contamination of the nearby alluvial aquifers. Aquifers locally consist of thin fractured reservoirs, generally within low-permeability formations, and it can be difficult to plan the exploitation of resources based on conventional techniques. An integrated study based on geological data investigated the link between tectonics and groundwater circulation, to better define the hydrological model. After the regional identification of fault and fracture patterns, a major structure was investigated in detail to accurately map its spatial position and to understand the geometry and properties of the associated aquifer and assess its exploitation potential. The subsurface around the fault zone was clearly imaged using ground probing radar, two-dimensional and three-dimensional resistivity tomography, and three-dimensional shallow seismic surveys. The vertical and horizontal contacts between the different geological units of the Ligurian and Tuscan series were resolved with a high degree of spatial accuracy. Three-dimensional high-resolution geophysical imaging proved to be a very effective means of characterising small-scale fractured reservoirs.  相似文献

Coral diseases are currently playing a major role in the worldwide decline in coral reef integrity. One of the coral species most afflicted by disease in the Caribbean, and which has been the focus of much research, is the sea fan Gorgonia ventalina. There is, however, very little information regarding the capacity of sea fans to recover after being infected. The aim of this study was to compare the rehabilitation capacity of G. ventalina after diseased‐induced lesions were eliminated either by scraping or extirpating the affected area. Scraping consisted of removing any organisms overgrowing the axial skeleton from the diseased area as well as the purple tissue bordering these overgrowths using metal bristle brushes. Extirpation consisted of cutting the diseased area, including the surrounding purpled tissue, using scissors. The number of scraped colonies that fully or partially rehabilitated after being manipulated and the rates at which the sea fans whose lesions were scrapped grew back healthy tissue were compared among: (i) colonies that inhabited two sites with contrasting environmental conditions; (ii) colonies of different sizes and (iii) colonies with different ratios of area of legions to total colony area (LA/CA). Both strategies proved to be very successful in eliminating lesions from sea fans. In the case of scraping, over 51% of the colonies recovered between 80% and 100% of the lost tissue within 16 months. The number of colonies that recovered from scraping was similar among sites and among colony sizes, but differed significantly depending on the relative amount of lesion to colony area (LA/CA). When lesions were extirpated, lesions did not reappear in any of the colonies. We conclude that lesion scraping is useful for eliminating relatively small lesions (i.e. LA/CA < 10%), as these are likely to recover in a shorter period of time, whereas for relatively large lesions (LA/CA ≥ 10%) it is more appropriate to extirpate the lesion.  相似文献

A contribution to the theoretical analysis of eclipsing x-ray binary systems and the calculation of physical and geometrical elements, are represented. The principle of this work is to make fitting between the observational light curve and the synthetic light curve built up in accordance with the Roche model, and to consider the elements of the best fitting as new elements. This method were applied to three systems, there are: (i) HZ Herculis (Hercules X-1). (ii) Krzemenski's star (Centaurus X-3). (iii) HD 77851 (Vela X-1). Finally, the mass-luminosity relation and the H-R diagram for the optical components of the three systems, have been plotted and studied. In this paper, we highlight the significance of astrophysical dataarchives, and the great opprtunities they are offering for researchersin general, and those in the developing countries in particular. Wefocus on high energy astrophysical data archives, taking RXTE as a casestudy, where we give a brief introduction to this satellite and itsinstrumentation. This paper investigates the role played by geomorphological and tectonic processes affecting a portion of an active mountain belt in causing the occurrence of different types of landslides developed in flysch bedrock. The adopted multidisciplinary approach (geomorphology, geology and geophysics) allowed to recognize in a portion of the Northern Apennines of Italy different types of landslides that developed in response to slope dynamics, in turn dependent on broader regional-scale tectonic processes. Sedimentary bed attitude, local tectonic discontinuities and lithology only partially influenced the type of landslides, which have been deeply affected by the activity of regional-scale antiform that controlled the hillslope geomorphic evolution in different ways. The growth of this structure and the tilting of its forelimb produced gently dipping slopes that approached the threshold angle that can cause the occurrence of (mainly) translational rockslides. Conversely, high-angle normal faulting parallel to the antiform axis (related to a later stage of activity of the antiform itself) strongly controlled the stream network evolution and caused the watercourses to deeply incise portions of their valleys. This incision produced younger steep valley slopes and caused the development of complex landslides (roto-translational slides-earth/debris flow). The results of the integrated study presented in this paper allowed to distinguish two main types of landslides whose development reflects the events that led to the geomorphological and geological evolution of the area. In this perspective, within the study area, landslides can be regarded and used as indicators of broader-scale recent tectonic processes.  相似文献

A fast and efficient subsurface radar imaging procedure, based on a multi-channel cart system, has been developed and tested within the framework of a large-scale archaeological investigation project in northern Italy.The tested cart comprises 14 closely-spaced dipoles, rotated by 45° with respect to the dragging direction, and allows unidirectional scanning operations. Using this approach, an area of approximately 75 000m2 was surveyed daytime via recording of a dense grid of about 490km of radar profiles. Geo-referencing of the scanning trajectories was achieved operating a separate on-board differential Global Positioning System in real-time kinematic mode. In this configuration the final positioning error of the radar sweeps was less than 0.05m.The large amount of collected data, of the order of tens of GBytes, was processed, using an open-source software package, on a workstation-based environment. A set of specific codes was developed to fully automate the data processing and the image generation procedure. Critical steps during code development were the integration of positioning and radar data, the referencing of the single radar sweeps and the correction for changes in the spectral amplitude of the different channels.The processed data volume displays high signal coherency and reveals several well-defined reflectors, clearly visible both on vertical profiles and horizontal time slices. The plan of the Roman settlement could be revealed in detail proving the potential of the tested approach for assisting high-resolution archaeological investigations of large areas.  相似文献

This paper describes two artificial intelligence techniques for prediction of maximum dry density (MDD) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cement stabilized soil. The first technique uses various artificial neural network (ANN) models such as Bayesian regularization method (BRNN), Levenberg- Marquardt algorithm (LMNN) and differential evolution algorithm (DENN). The second technique uses the support vector machine (SVM) that is firmly based on the theory of statistical learning theory, uses regression technique by introducing ε-insensitive loss function has been adopted. The inputs of both models are liquid limit (LL), plasticity index (PI), clay fraction (CF)%, sand (S)%, gravel Gr (%), moisture content (MC) and cement content (Ce). The sensitivity analyses of the input parameters have been also done for both models. Based on different statistical criteria the SVM models are found to be better than ANN models for the prediction of MDD and UCS of cement stabilized soil.  相似文献
