Taal Volcano is a highly active center in the southwest Luzonvolcanic field. Recent eruptions are confined to Volcano Island,a plexus of cinder cones and tuff rings surrounding a centralcrater, occupying (and post-dating) a massive volcano-tectonicdepression resulting from multiple phases of collapse. Taallava series can be distinguished from each other by differencesin major and trace element trends and trace element ratios,indicating multiple magmatic systems associated with discretecenters in time and space. On Volcano Island, contemporaneous lava series range from typicallycalc-alkaline to iron-enriched. Major and trace element variationin these series can be modelled by fractionation of similarassemblages, with early fractionation of titano-magnetite inless iron-enriched series. However, phase compositional andpetrographic evidence of mineral-liquid disequilibrium suggeststhat magma mixing played an important role in the evolutionof these series. We interpret this to mean that mixing occurredalong a line of descent defined by fractional crystallization,with mixing occurring over larger compositional intervals inthe less iron-enriched series, consistent with numerical modelling. Between-series incompatible element ratio differences are notexplicable through differential partial melting of a homogeneoussource (also confirmed by variation in Pb isotopic ratios),suggesting a supply system from discrete melt zones in heterogeneousmantle.  相似文献

This study aims to assess conservation practices in Izta-Popo National Park(Central Mexico) by evaluating the mechanisms of sediment transfer. We applied a methodology based on fallout ~(137)Cs and optically stimulated luminescence(OSL) analysis. This was tested in the upper catchment of Amalacaxco Gorge, selected for being one of the sectors of the park in which man-made actions have been implemented in last decades to favor forest growth in the alpine grassland and to reduce the effect of water runoff. We quantified the ~(137)Cs activity using gamma and beta spectrometry of fine sediment grains extracted from the surface of parcels of 0.4 m2 in areas of natural forest, natural alpine grassland, alpine grassland with conservation practices, ravines and trails. In general, ~(137)Cs values increases as local slope decreases as it was expected. The natural forest is the most stable area in terms of soil erosion and sediment accumulation and, mean ~(137)Cs activity was taken as reference to assess cumulative zones, with higher ~(137)Cs values and erosive, with lower. We found that trails are accumulative surfaces but in other areas, erosion predominates. Man-made ditches, trenches and afforestation in the alpine grassland have higher ~(137)Cs values than thenatural grassland, which indicates that conservation practices are limiting the sediment transfer from hillslopes to channels, however, soil retention is less than in the natural grassland. Additionally, we evaluated the luminescence(OSL) values obtained from samples extracted from the sediment transported in ravines that are cutting into different sectors of the study area to assess the grade of resetting of fluvial materials. These luminescence results indicated that the sediment transported in ravines that are cutting into the natural forest and alpine grassland is bleached more efficiently than the sediment transported in the alpine grassland with conservation practices. Results of fallout ~(137)Cs and luminescence strongly suggest that man-made actions in this part of the Izta-Popo National Park are dramatically modifying the natural mechanisms of sediment transfer and favoring soil erosion. We conclude that made ditches, trenches and afforestation are not an effective conservation practice in Amalacaxco Gorge because they are promoting soil erosion instead of reducing it.  相似文献

Volcanic rocks of the Kyushu–Palau Ridge (KPR) from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) site 448 and from Belau comprise a low-to-medium-K arc tholeiitic series. Belau rocks include (probable) Mid-Eocene low-Ca type-3 boninite and pre-Early Oligocene–Early Miocene low-K arc tholeiitic basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite and dacite. Palau Trench samples include sparsely phyric high-Mg, -Cr and -Ni rocks which resemble the Belau boninite and Izu–Bonin – Mariana (IBM) system boninites. The high-Mg Palau Trench samples also resemble other primitive arc lavas (e.g. arc picrites). Their chemistry suggests an origin involving steep thermal gradients in multiply depleted mantle. Subduction of hot, young lithosphere under a young hot upper plate is postulated to explain this occurrence. The KPR is inferred to be the source of Eocene boninite and arc tholeiitic terranes presently in forearc regions of the IBM system. A model is presented here showing how many IBM boninites may have originated in a small area near Belau. These have migrated eastward by episodic back-arc opening accompanying eastward migration of arcs and trenches. Oldest known KPR rocks ( ca 47.5 Ma at DSDP site 296), and presumed KPR-derived exotic terranes of Guam ( ca 43.8 Ma), presage the postulated Eocene ( ca 42–43 Ma) change in Pacific plate motion invoked as the cause of subduction initiation at the KPR. The KPR has been rotated more than 40° clockwise since the Eocene, thus the age mismatch may indicate a different tectonic style, for example transtension or transpression, in earliest KPR history.  相似文献

Mayon is the most active volcano along the east margin of southernLuzon, Philippines. Petrographic and major element data indicatethat Mayon has produced a basaltic to andesitic lava seriesby fractional crystallization and magma mixing. Trace elementdata indicate that the parental basalts came from a heterogeneousmantle source. The unmodified composition of the mantle wedgeis similar to that beneath the Indian Ocean. To this mantlewas added a subduction component consisting of melt from subductedpelagic sediment and aqueous fluid dehydrated from the subductedbasaltic crust. Lavas from the highly active Taal Volcano onthe west margin of southern Luzon are compositionally more variablethan Mayon lavas. Taal lavas also originated from a mantle wedgemetasomatized by aqueous fluid dehydrated from the subductedbasaltic crust and melt plus fluid derived from the subductedterrigenous sediment. More sediment is involved in the generationof Taal lavas. Lead isotopes argue against crustal contamination.Some heterogeneity of the unmodified mantle wedge and differencesin whether the sediment signature is transferred into the lavasource through an aqueous fluid or melt phase are needed toexplain the regional compositional variation of Philippine arclavas. Lahars are hazardous events that can cause serious damage to people who live close to volcanic areas; several were registered at different times in the last century, such as at Mt St Helens (USA) in 1980, Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia) in 1985 and Mt Pinatubo (Philippines) in 1990. Risk maps are currently used by decision‐makers to help them plan to mitigate the hazard‐risk of lahars. Risk maps are acquired based on a series of tenets that take into account the distribution and chronology of past lahar deposits, and basically two approaches have been used: (1) The use of Flow Simulation Software (FSS), which simulates flows along channels in a Digital Elevation Model and (2) The Geochronological Method (GM), in which the mapping is based on the evaluation of lahar magnitude and frequency. This study addresses the production of a lahar risk map using the two approaches (FSS and GM) for a study area located at Popocatépetl volcano – Central Mexico. Santiago Xalitzintla, a town located on the northern flank of Popocatépetl volcano, where volcanic activity in recent centuries has triggered numerous lahars that have endangered local inhabitants, has been used for the case study. Results from FSS did not provide satisfactory findings because they were not consistent with lahar sediment observations made during fieldwork. By contrast, the GM produced results consistent with these observations, and therefore we use them to assess the hazard and produce the risk map for the study area.  相似文献
