Ever increasing pressures on tropical forests worldwide due to anthropogenic disturbances have greatly affected both above-and belowground functioning of these forests. While fine roots play major ecological roles in forests through assisting in nutrient and water uptake and returning elements to the soil environment, coarse roots play an important role in C sequestration. We studied changes in fine and coarse root biomass, production, turnover and carbon and nitrogen return to the soil in two regenerating forest stands(RFs)following stonemining that were 5 years(RF-5)and 15 years(RF-15)post-disturbance compared with a natural forest stand(NF)in Mizoram,North-east India.Fine(2mm)and coarse root(2-10 mm)biomass differed significantly among the forest stands and ranged from239(RF-5)to 415(NF)and 230(RF-5)to 436(NF)g m 2,respectively.Total root(fine+coarse)biomass increased during stand development but the proportion of very fine root(0.5 mm)to total root production decreased.Fine root biomass decreased with increasing soil depth.Fine and total root biomass showed strong seasonal correlations with soil moisture, more so than for rainfall and temperature, whereas these relationships were less clear for the coarse root biomass. The amount of N(25-55 kg ha~(-1))and C(1.9-3.6t ha~(-1))stored in root biomass increased with stand age with a corresponding increase in production and turnover of C and N to the soil.Disturbance to these tropical forests negatively affected root dynamics, influenced their spatiotemporal patterns, and reduced the production, amount and availability of nutrients returned to the soil along with a strong reduction in the root biomass carbon pool and sequestration in carbon residence time.We observed that root growth, especially fine roots,is dependent on abiotic variables, and plays a significant role in early stages of secondary succession by adding organic matter and nutrients through high turnover rates in these forests.  相似文献

The peteromineralogical characterization of the soil was carried out for the 12 soil profiles exposed in the Shorea robusta dominated forests of the Siwalik forest division, Dehradun. The quartz was observed as the dominating light mineral fraction (64–80%) in all the profiles studied. Biotite, hornblende, zircon, tourmaline, rutile and opaques comprising of iron minerals constituted the heavy mineral fraction (20%). The mineralogy of both the sand and clay fractions revealed a mixed mineralogy. The clay minerals in the order of their dominance were vermiculite, illite, kaolinite and mixed layer minerals. The presence of vermiculite and illite in appreciable quantities indicates that these were synthesized from the K-rich soil solution, as orthoclase and micas were present in significant quantities in the sand minerals. The mineral suites identified in the study shows that the geological, climatological and topographical factors of the region collectively played a dominant role in their formation and transformation. After critical appraisal of the results, it may be deduced that the mineralogical composition, physicochemical properties and total elemental analysis of the soils do not show any deficiency of the bases and other plant nutrients in general. The inherent fertility of the soil is good as indicated by the sand and clay mineralogy of the soil and the biotite and feldspar together with the mica is an important source of nutrients for the vegetation in the soils of the Doon valley.  相似文献

The Kachchh Mainland Fault (KMF) is a major E–W trending seismically active fault of the Kachchh palaeorift basin whose neotectonic evolution is not known. The present study deals with the eastern part of the KMF zone where the fault is morphologically expressed as steep north facing scarps and is divisible into five morphotectonic segments. The Quaternary sediments occurring in a narrow zone between the E–W trending KMF scarps and the flat Banni plain to the north are documented. The sediments show considerable heterogeneity vertically as well as laterally along the KMF zone. (The Quaternary sediments for a northward sloping and are exposed along the north flowing streams which also show rapid decrease in the depth of incision in the same direction.) The deposits, in general, comprise coarse as well as finer gravelly deposits, sands and aeolian and fluvial miliolites. The Quaternary sediments of the KMF zone show three major aggradation phases. The oldest phase includes the colluvio-fluvial sediments occurring below the miliolites. These deposits are strikingly coarse grained and show poor sorting and large angular clasts of Mesozoic rocks. The sedimentary characteristics indicate deposition, dominantly by debris flows and sediment gravity flows, as small coalescing alluvial fans in front of the scarps. These deposits suggest pre-miliolite neotectonic activity along the KMF. The second aggradation phase comprises aeolian miliolites and fluvially reworked miliolites that have been previously dated from middle to late Pleistocene. The youngest phase is the post-miliolite phase that includes all deposits younger than miliolite. These are represented by comparatively finer sandy gravels, gravelly sands and sand. The sediment characteristics suggest deposition in shallow braided stream channels under reduced level of neotectonic activity along the KMF during post-miliolite time evidenced by vertical dips of miliolites and tilting of gravels near the scarps. The tectonically controlled incision and dissection of the Quaternary deposits is the result of neotectonic activity that continues at present day. The overall nature, sedimentary characteristics and geomorphic setting of the sediments suggest that the KMF remained neotectonically active throughout the Quaternary period.  相似文献

Abstract— Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of the Didwana‐Rajod chondrite, which fell on 1991 August 12 in western Rajasthan, India, are presented. The results are compared with the Mössbauer data of several enstatite and ordinary chondrites including the Dhajala chondrite for which Mössbauer data were acquired during the present study. The Didwana‐Rajod chondrite's iron phases and its oxidation states strongly suggest that it should be classified as an H‐type ordinary chondrite instead of the earlier suggestion (based on petrographic studies) that it could be an enstatite chondrite. The present study demonstrates that Mössbauer spectroscopy is a very powerful technique for aiding in the classification of meteorites.  相似文献

Abstract— Two meteorites belonging to the howardite‐eucrite‐diogenite (HED) group fell recently in Rajasthan, India. One of these, Piplia Kalan, was classified as a eucrite and the other, Lohawat, as a howardite. In this study, we present the results of Mössbauer spectroscopic investigations of these two meteorites. We also compare the results with the Mössbauer experiments reported for the Kapoeta howardite and look for systematics in the Mössbauer spectra of HED meteorites.  相似文献

Abstract— We report here a chance find of a meteorite in the sand dunes of Ararki village of Hanumangarh district in the Rajasthan desert of northwest India. Chemical and petrological evidence in conjunction with isotopic composition of oxygen indicate that it is an L5 chondrite. The fayalite content of olivines is 26.3 mol%. The meteorite has some serpentinized olivines and 0.3% carbon having a terrestrial isotopic composition, indicating that it is moderately weathered. The absence of 22Na indicate that the meteorite fell to Earth more than a decade ago. The cosmic‐ray exposure age based on cosmogenic 21Ne is 7.2 Ma. Low density of cosmic‐ray heavy nuclei tracks, low 26A1 activity, the shielding parameter [(22Ne/21Ne)C = 1.094] and absence of neutron capture effects indicate cosmic‐ray shielding in a meteoroid having radius of about 16 cm, implying a meteoroid mass of about 60 kg and ablation of about 93%. The gas retention ages, based on U/Th‐4He and K‐40Ar are 1.1 and 0.58 Ga, respectively, suggesting a heating and degassing event late in the history of this meteorite.  相似文献

Abstract— We conducted Mössbauer spectroscopic studies on the Ghubara meteorite which had been described as at least two‐generation regolith breccia on the macro scale. The isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of the Fe‐Ni part are quite different from those obtained in ordinary chondrites, reflecting shock effects. We observed a large amount of magnetite that may have come from weathering of, primarily, the silicate fraction. We found very similar iron mineralogy in the Densmore meteorite.  相似文献
