A field survey of zooplankton communities was carried out in 32 recently established tropical semi-arid reservoirs in the highlands of Northern Ethiopia with the aim to identify to what extent environmental factors determine species composition of the cladoceran community in such isolated and young reservoirs. To address seasonal variation, the survey was carried out both at the beginning and the end of the dry season. A total of 15 species of cladocerans were identified. Daphnia was the most abundant cladoceran genus, and was present in all reservoirs. Using presence-absence data, no association between cladoceran community composition and geographic distance was found. RDA results indicate that the set of environmental variables that explained cladoceran community composition differed among seasons. Depth, altitude and fish biomass showed a significant association with cladoceran community composition during the wet season, whereas variation in cladoceran community structure was associated with phytoplankton biomass in the dry season. The relative abundance of Daphnia was much higher in the pelagic than in the littoral zone of our study systems. Two key groups of pelagic filter-feeding cladocerans, Diaphanosoma and Daphnia, showed a clear pattern, in which one or the other tended to strongly dominate the community. In addition, we observed a negative association between dominance of Daphnia in the zooplankton community and dominance of cyanobacteria in the phytoplankton community.  相似文献

This study aims to examine the efficiency of Opuntia ficus‐indica for removing organochlorine pesticides from surface waters. Adsorption properties such as size, dose, and time of O. ficus‐indica for aldrin, dieldrin, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were studied through stirring and column methods. Because of their high affinity and swelling characteristics, dried O. ficus‐indica was studied in stirring while fresh unpeeled O. ficus‐indica was applied in both stirring and column experiments and proved to be well‐suited to column application. Before removing pesticides, the column was flashed with distilled water eliminate the turbidity and smell from fresh unpeeled cactus. The removal of pesticides increased with an increasing adsorbent dose and decreased with adsorbent particle sizes. The optimum adsorbent dose is 10 g for dried and 15 g for fresh unpeeled O. ficus‐indica. The experimental results show that O. ficus‐indica possesses strong adsorption ability for aldrin, dieldrin, and DDT, and the adsorption isotherm data obeyed the Freundlich model. The results of our small‐scale experiments suggest a strong potential to develop local small‐scale water treatment units that can be used at the level of individual households or local communities, using a widely available adsorbent.  相似文献

Abstract

Six‐hourly surface wind analyses over the North Pacific Ocean covering the 10‐year period 1969–78 are used to describe synoptic storm activity in terms of parameters that are directly related to the atmospheric forcing of the ocean. The cube of the atmospheric friction velocity, u3 * and the curl of the surface wind stress, curl τ, are used because of their relationship to turbulent vertical mixing and Ekman pumping in the ocean, respectively. In an attempt to isolate synoptic disturbances from mean fields, the time series of surface wind components at each individual grid point are partitioned into “high‐pass” (periods shorter than 10 days) and “low‐pass” (periods longer than 10 days) components by means of conventional filtering procedures. The two quantities u3 * and curl τ are then calculated from (a) the high‐pass filtered wind components only, (b) a combination of the filtered wind components that include the interaction between the high‐ and low‐pass fields, and (c) the unfiltered wind components. These quantities describe the atmospheric forcing of the ocean that is attributable to (a) synoptic storm activity by itself, (b) synoptic storm activity in the presence of the low‐pass (mean) flow, and (c) the total spectrum of wind forcing, respectively.

Maps of the long‐term (10‐year) monthly mean u3 * calculated from (a) and (b) are coherent across the mid‐latitude North Pacific and appear to coincide with the normal seasonal evolution of synoptic storm activity in that region. In mid‐latitudes, the values of u3 * calculated from (a) and (b) are 27 and 83%, respectively, of the value of u3 * itself. Thus, a major fraction of the production of turbulent energy available for mixing in the upper layers of the ocean comes from synoptic disturbances with a period shorter than 10 days. Maps of the long‐term monthly mean wind stress curl are quite different in that the mean wind stress curl calculated from (a) is essentially negligible. However, the mean curl calculated from (b) closely resembles the pattern of total curl (c), but with a magnitude of only 41% of (c). Thus, synoptic disturbances with a period shorter than 10 days are also responsible for a significant fraction of the Ekman pumping of the ocean.

Future studies with these data will attempt to determine whether a relationship exists between synoptic storm activity, as measured by the parameters developed in this study, and large‐scale sea‐surface temperature anomalies.  相似文献
