An investigation of the upper Kuwait Group clastic sequence (Mio-Pleistocene) exposed along the Jal Az-Zor escarpment in north Kuwait revealed several horizons of fossil calcrete. Field occurrences and textural characteristics of the studied sequence indicated that the fossil calcrete was hosted in cyclic fluviatile muddy sandstones and developed through diagenesis during inter-fluvial periods. Depositional and diagenetic features of the calcretized fluviatile sandstone units suggested that each cycle started with the deposition of a fluviatile muddy host sandstone during a humid period. This was followed by a period of semi-aridity during which calcrete profiles developed. The upper part of the calcrete profiles was weathered and terra rosa type soil was formed during wet seasons. This was succeeded by a severe arid climate and the deposition of desert aeolian sand sheets. Fossil nodular calcrete was only developed within the fluviatile muddy sandstones. The calcretized sandstones were lithified in two stages of diagenesis-an early stage that was responsible for the authigenesis of microcrystalline calcite and the development of calcrete nodules, and a later stage during which macrocrystalline calcite cement was precipitated as an intergranular cement displacing and replacing the clay matrix of the host sediments and filling fractures and cavities in the calcrete nodules. The findings and conclusions of the present study will help in understanding the lithostratigraphic setting of the Kuwait Group clastic sequence in the northern Arabian Gulf region.

Dedolomitization of a dolocrete profile hosted in Mio-Pleistocene siliciclastic deposits in the area of Kuwait City, Arabian Gulf was investigated. Dolocrete dolomite crystals vary considerably in size, shape and internal structure; however, they are mostly zoned. Zonation is usually due to the alteration of cloudy and clear zones. The cloudy zones, which are mostly formed of disordered metastable dolomite, are more susceptible to dedolomitization than the stable, well ordered clear zones. Two modes of dedolomitization were recognized; the first involves complete dissolution of the metastable dolomite followed by precipitation of intracrystalline cavity-filling calcite. The second is a pseudomorphic replacement of dolomite by calcite. This replacement takes place by the simultaneous dissolution of dolomite and precipitation of calcite in such a manner that the original dolomite fabrics are inherited in the dedolomite. Exposed and near-surface dolocrete profile (less than 5 m deep) are almost completely dedolomitized and altered to secondary calcrete whereas subsurface profiles are slightly dedolomitized. Dedolomitization of the sub surface dolocrete profiles may indicate the effect of flushing by fresh groundwater; which flows from west to east, whereas the alteration of the exposed dolocrete profile could be attributed to be an effect of meteoric water. A new mode of calcrete genesis by dedolomitization and/or complete calcitization of precursor dolocrete is suggested.

X-ray diffractometer analysis and SEM investigation confirmed the occurrence of jarosite and alunogen minerals in the Quaternary siliciclastic sabkha sediments of northern Kuwait within the Bahrah oilfield area, Arabian Gulf. Jarosite is relatively abundant in a near-surface whitish sticky tidal muddy sand layer about 60 cm thick that overlies the ferruginous sandstone of the Oligo-Miocene Ghar Formation. Jarosite occurs as clusters of euhedral pseudo-cubes of about 1 μm in size and as agglomerated nanoglobules of 250 nm in size. A hypogenetic origin related to the reaction of sulfuric acid produced by the oxidation of H2S associated with hydrocarbon gas seepages with K and Fe leachates is suggested. The restricted occurrence of jarosite within near-surface sabkha sediments may be attributed to limited tidal inundation and prevalence of arid climatic conditions.

Lead concentrations and isotopic composition of sediment samples collected from three sites within the Lebanese coastal zones were measured: at Akkar, Dora and Selaata. Akkar is located far from any direct source of contamination, while Dora and Selaata receive urban and industrial wastes, respectively. Low Pb concentrations (6–16 μg g−1) were detected in the Akkar sediments, and high concentrations of Pb (70–101 μg g−1) were detected in the Dora sediments. Measuring stable isotope ratios of Pb makes it possible to identify the principal sources of Pb in the Akkar sediments as Pb emitted from gasoline combustion and Pb originating from natural sources. On the other hand, Pb stable isotopic ratios in Dora sediments indicate that they are more highly influenced by anthropogenic sources. Isotopic Pb ratios in the Selaata deposits, where Pb concentrations range between 5 and 35 μg g−1, have an exceptional radiogenic signature for marine sediments 1.25 < 206Pb/207Pb < 1.6 and 0.5 < 206Pb/208Pb < 0.67, which shows the impact of the phosphogypsum discharged by Selaata’s chemical plant. Isotopic Pb analysis applied to EDTA extracts, to test the mobility of Pb, shows that that this mobility is high (>60%) after 24 h of extraction, and that the extracted Pb is less radiogenic than the residual Pb.

A paleokarstic zone capping the Middle Eocene dolomitic Dammam Formation delineates a regional disconformity with the overlying Mio-Pleistocene fluvial deposits in Kuwait. This formation outcrops in a quarry located in the southeast of Kuwait and occurs in the subsurface of Umm Ghudair water field, west Kuwait. Karstification has affected the upper member of the Dammam Formation, which is formed of extensively chertified, vuggy chalky biodolomicrite. Karstification is manifested by two phases: a dissolution phase that was responsible for the occurrence of surface and near surface karst features and a precipitation phase during which a karst carapace and dolocretic and calcitic pseudobreccias were developed. Petrographic investigations of both the biodolomicrites host rock and the karst lithotypes revealed a complex diagenetic history that encompasses the following diagenetic events, arranged in a chronological order: (a) replacive dolomitization, (b) precipitative dolomitization, (c) precipitative silica, (d) replacive silica, (e) karstification, (f) development of karst carapace [calcretization and calcitization (development of calcitic psuedobreccia)], (g) dolocretization (development of dolocretic psuedobreccia), (h) mild karstification, (i) calcite precipitation, and (j) silica precipitation. The development of the karst carapace at the unconformity surface between the Eocene Dammam Formation dolomicrites and the overlying Mio-Pleistocene Kuwait Group clastics has played a significant role in the hydrological characteristics of Kuwait usable groundwater resources. It is recommended that the occurrence of similar diagenetic processes within the Arabian carbonate shelf deposits be investigated.

Well-stratified lacustrine deposits of clay, silt, and marl occur within the rugged mountainous triangle of igneous and metamorphic rocks of Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. These deposits occur only in two sites along Wadi Feiran channel (Feiran and El-Tarfa Oases), where very dense acidic dykes intersect their stream courses. Such dykes played an important role in damming water from torrential rainfall during the humid period to form lakes. The SRTM (90 m) data and high-resolution images (IKONOS) have been utilized to reconstruct the paleolakes in terms of shape, size and water volume. Results show that lake deposits are located where acidic dykes cross narrow channel of high sinuosity. At their former heights, the dykes dammed the surface runoff, thus, three local freshwater paleolakes formed behind them. GIS analysis shows that the largest of these paleolakes was formed in the area of Feiran Oasis. Two other smaller paleolakes were formed at El-Tarfa Oasis due to the presence of two pronounced acidic dykes. These lake deposits were derived mainly from El-Tih Plateau via Wadi El-Akhdar. Another source of these deposits could have been a thin sedimentary cap over the weathered granites northeast of Feiran basin.

Summary A microwave radiometer with channels near the 18 GHz water vapor line and in nearby windows, the Special Sensor Microwave/Temperature-2 (SSM/T-2) was launched on a Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite in November of 1991. The instrument is intended to provide data for the retrieval of atmospheric water vapor profiles. Because the relationship between the radiances observed by the instrument and the water vapor profile are both non-linear and non-local and because of the influence of clouds, the interpretation of the radiances is inherently complex. Here we develop a simplified, albeit approximate, algorithm for the profile retrievals and test it with simulation studies. Specifically it is shown that for each channel of the instrument near the 183 GHz line there is a nearly constant overburden of water vapor above the height at which the atmospheric temperature equals the observed brightness temperature. This relationship, in turn, provides the basis for a simple analytic algorithm for the relative humidity immediately above that height. The simplified algorithm is useful as a first guess for iterative solutions to the non-linear equations and for a variety of analyses such as estimating the impact of uncertainty in the radiances or the temperature profile on the retrieved water vapor profile. It is also useful as a conceptual tool to aid in the understanding of the more complex algorithms.

SummaryAnalogy Between Indentation and Blasting Tests on Brittle Rocks This paper presents a common mechanism of breaking quasi-brittle rocks either by drilling and blasting or by indentation. Only minor modifications, to account for the prevailing boundary conditions pertaining to either one of these cutting processes, are required.Rock breakage by drilling and blasting or by indentation is based on the formation of a heterogeneous stress field due to the application of concentrated loads either by the indentor or by the detonation of the explosives. Rock behavior varies according to the stress level generated into the material. In the high stress zone it is plastic or pseudoplastic. In low stress region, failure is of the brittle extension type.In indentation the formation of a confined plastic zone is essential before chipping. However, for blasting plasticity is not necessary to occur prior to chipping because the high pressure gases that are generated from the explosion are usually quite sufficient — under suitable conditions — to create failure by extension cracking.Energy consumed in these rock cutting processes is a function of the relative amount of fines produced and their size distribution (or degree of fineness). Further improvements in rock breakage efficiency can be achieved by the proper choice of the important parameters for the specific techniques. The above analogy can be extended to other well known rock testing and breakage techniques.
In Zonen niedriger Spannung erhält man Dehnungssprödbrüche.

Wadi Queih basin hosts a ~2,500-m thick Neoproterozoic volcanoclastic successions that unconformably lie over the oldest Precambrian basement. These successions were deposited in alluvial fan, fluviatile, lacustrine, and aeolian depositional environments. Diagenetic minerals from these volcaniclastic successions were studied by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and analytical electron microscopy. The diagenetic processes recognized include mechanical compaction, cementation, and dissolution. Based on the framework grain–cement relationships, precipitation of the early calcite cement was either accompanied or followed by the development of part of the pore-lining and pore-filling clay cements. Secondary porosity development occurred due to partial to complete dissolution of early calcite cement and feldspar grains. In addition to calcite, several different clay minerals including kaolinite, illite, and chlorite with minor smectite occur as pore-filling and pore-lining cements. Chlorite coating grains helps to retain primary porosity by retarding the envelopment of quartz overgrowths. Clay minerals and their diagenetic assemblages has been distinguished between primary volcaniclastics directly produced by pyroclastic eruptions and epiclastic volcaniclastics derived from erosion of the pre-existing volcanic rocks. Phyllosilicates of the epiclastic rocks display wider compositional variations owing to wide variations in the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the parent material. Most of the phyllosilicates (kaolinite, illite, chlorite, mica, and smectite) are inherited minerals derived from the erosion of the volcanic basement complex, which had undergone hydrothermal alteration. Smectites of the epiclastic rocks are beidellite–montmorillonite derived from the altered volcanic materials of the sedimentary environment. Conversely, phyllosilicate minerals of the pyroclastic rocks are dominated by kaolinite, illite, and mica, which were formed by pedogenetic processes through the hydrothermal influence.
