The analysis of the geometry of distribution of earthquake foci in the central part of Andean South America between 18° and
34°S made the delineation of several seismically active fracture zones in the continental wedge overlying the subducting Nazca
plate possible. Correlation of their position with the distribution of hypogene accumulations of metals revealed that the
majority of large mineral deposits and mining districts are situated in the outcrops of these fracture zones. We present geometrical
documentation (map of epicentres, vertical and longitudinal cross sections) of the most important fracture zones and data
on mineralogical composition, genetic type and available radiometric ages of mineral deposits. Sixteen mining districts in
Chile, and 24 in Argentina, were attributed to the seismically active fracture zones. Major mining districts and individual
large mineral deposits occur in six seismically active fracture zones roughly parallel to the axis of the Peru-Chile trench
(Carachas-Portillo, Choquelimpie, Iquique, Domeyko, Río Blanco-Los Bayos and Farellones F.Z.), in six fracture zones roughly
perpendicular to the trench (El Salvador, Maricunga, Jaroma, Ujina, Tumbaya and Incahuasi-León Muerto F.Z.) and in two fracture
zones oriented at an angle of about 45° in relation to the direction of the presently active Andean subduction (Aconcagua
and Sierra del Volcán F.Z.). The occurrences of large mineral deposits of different ages show that these fracture zones were
also active in the geological past and represent sites of permanent re-opening of paths allowing ore-bearing solutions and
long-term accumulation of large amounts of metals to occur in relatively restricted domains of the Earth's crust. The mining
districts with dated mineral deposits are arranged into four periods of hypogene mineralization: Upper Miocene-Pliocene, Upper
Oligocene-Middle Miocene, Upper Eocene-Middle Oligocene, Lower Paleocene-Upper Eocene. These periods of metallogenic activity
correlate well with four supposed Andean subduction cycles active in the Tertiary. The occurrence of mineral deposits of different
ages in recently active fracture zones can be used as an important evidence in favour of long-term spatial permanence and
activity of these zones and as a guide for the discovery of further mineral deposits hidden under young sedimentary and volcanic
cover in the fracture zones.

Studies at the intersection of cognitive science and linguistics have revealed the crucial role that metaphors play in shaping our thoughts about phenomena we cannot see. According to the domains interaction theory of cognition, a metaphoric expression sets up mappings between a target domain that we wish to understand and a familiar source domain. The source domain contains elements ("commonplaces") that we manipulate mentally, like parts of an analogue model, to illuminate the target domain. This paper applies the structure of domains interaction theory to analyze the dynamics of a metaphor in hydrogeology: the so-called bubble formed by water injected into an aquifer during aquifer storage and recovery (ASR). Of the four commonplaces of bubbles--(1) they are discrete; (2) they are geometrically simple; (3) they rise; and (4) they burst--we focus on the first two using both displacement and dispersion (tracer) models for both homogeneous and heterogeneous storage zones patterned from geological studies of the Suwannee Limestone of Sarasota County, Florida. The displacement model easily shows that "bottle brush" better represents the geometric complexity predicted from the known and inferred heterogeneity. There is virtually no difference, however, in the prediction of recovery efficiency using the dispersion model for a bubble (homogeneous flow zone) vs. bottle brush (heterogeneous flow zone). On the other hand, only the bottle brush reveals that unrecovered tracer is located preferentially in the low-permeability layers that lie adjacent to high-permeability channels in the flow zones. 相似文献

Mining of massive sulfide deposits in southwestern Spain extending back to the Copper and Bronze Ages has resulted in the
pollution of the Rio Tinto fluvial-estuarine complex, the site of Columbus' departure for the New World in 1492. Additional
sources of potential pollution include the large industrial complex at Huelva near the lower portion of the estuary. Extensive
analysis of surface sediment samples and cores has established that there are no geographic trends in the distribution of
the pollutants, which include Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Ti, Ba, Cr, V and Co. These data have, however, demonstrated that tidal flux
within the estuary carries phosphorus and perhaps other elements from the industrial complex at Huelva to the tidal limit
of the system, several kilometers upstream from the discharge site. Radiometric analysis of short cores shows that sedimentation
rates over at least the past couple of centuries have been about 0.3 cm/year. These data and that from a single deep core
demonstrate that the estuary was polluted from mining activity long before the large-scale operations began in the late nineteenth
century.

—Approximate PP plane wave displacement coefficients of reflection and transmission for weak contrast interfaces separating weakly but arbitrarily anisotropic elastic media are presented. The PP reflection coefficient for such an interface has been derived recently by Vavry?uk and P?en?ík (1997). The PP transmission coefficient presented in this paper was derived by the same approach. The coefficients are given as a sum of the coefficient for the weak contrast interface separating two nearby isotropic media and a term depending linearly on contrasts of the so-called weak anisotropy (WA) parameters (parameters specifying deviation of properties of the medium from isotropy), across the interface. While the reflection coefficient depends only on 8 of the complete set of the WA parameters describing P-wave phase velocity in weakly anisotropic media, the transmission coefficient depends on their complete set. The PP reflection coefficient depends on "shear-wave splitting parameter" γ. Tests of accuracy of the approximate formulae are presented on several models. 相似文献

The new GFZ/GRGS gravity field models GRIM5-S1 and GRIM5-C1, currently used as initial models for the CHAMP mission, have
been compared with other recent models (JGM 3, EGM 96) for radial orbit accuracy (by means of latitude lumped coefficients)
in computations on altimetry satellite orbits. The bases for accuracy judgements are multi-year averages of crossover sea
height differences from Geosat and ERS 1/2 missions. This radially sensitive data is fully independent of the data used to
develop these gravity models. There is good agreement between the observed differences in all of the world's oceans and projections
of the same errors from the scaled covariance matrix of their harmonic geopotential coefficients. It was found that the tentative
scale factor of five for the formal standard deviations of the harmonic coefficients of the new GRIM fields is justified,
i.e. the accuracy estimates, provided together with the GRIM geopotential coefficients, are realistic.

Estimates of the second tesseral torque due to the variations in the radial space position of the mean ocean surface as monitored by TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter system are derived. The magnitude of the studied torque may be compared to the tidal torque and to the tesseral torque caused by deformations due to the Earths rotation. However, such torque estimates strongly depend on the thickness of the ocean surface layer adopted in the spherical model of which the dynamics is believed to be responsible for the derived torque. The identification of mean semi-major axes (suitably defined) for satellite orbits to satisfy a variety of requirements for
geodesy, geophysics and oceanography, in terms of repeat orbits (with orbital resonances), is investigated. Various options
for the definition of semi-major axis, from the viewpoint of satellite dynamics, are described. Simple simulations of the
expected resonant changes in inclination are presented, and tools for the analysis of orbit resonances to extract certain
lumped harmonic coefficients of the geopotential (e.g. from the very precise CHAMP orbit) are resurrected. Finally, a preliminary
example of the 46th-order resonance analysis possible for CHAMP, based on the mean orbital elements produced by GFZ (GeoForschungs
Zentrum) for ephemeris prediction, is presented.
