The influence of two bivalve diets (Mytilus chilensis “chorito” and Tagelus dombeii "navajuela") at three temperatures (13, 15, and 18°C) was studied during the reproductive conditioning of Chorus giganteus (Lesson, 1829). Energy budgets were determined taking into account energy acquisition (ingestion and absorption) and energy expenditure (oxygen consumption, ammonia production, and energy placed into mucus production and egg laying). Relative physiological condition was assessed by calculating the scope for growth index (SFG). Diet and temperature both played key roles in the physiological energetic and reproductive conditioning of this snail. Tagelus was the preferred prey, probably because of its greater vulnerability to predatory attack by C. giganteus. The highest feeding rate was observed at 15°C, coinciding with optimal growth. Absorption efficiency was similar with both diets, despite the differential preference in prey. Temperature had no effect on oxygen uptake, but increased as the snails fed on Tagelus during the reproductive conditioning period. Diet was the main factor affecting SFG, and temperature, although significant, accounted for a lower percentage of variation in SFG. Highest growth rates were observed at 15°C on a Tagelus diet. Reproductive effort, measured as the proportion of the total energy budget of an organism that is allocated to reproduction, was highest at 18°C with a Tagelus diet. Energy would not be allocated for reproduction when the snails were fed with M. chilensis, as SFG was negative at all three temperatures.  相似文献

Progress in tidal science has been rapid in recent years. The advent of precision altimetry has enabled, for the very first time in tidal history, an accurate measurement of tides in most of the global oceans. This has revolutionized our knowledge of tides and tidal processes. Combined with high‐resolution numerical models of tides (and other recent advances in astronomy and geodesy), this increased knowledge is providing valuable assistance in effecting closure on many outstanding problems in this three‐centuries‐old science. For example, we now know the dissipation rate of lunar tides to be 3.17 TW to within 2%. However, there do remain some outstanding issues. While we know the rate at which tidal energy is being dissipated in the global oceans, there is still considerable uncertainty as to the mechanisms, locations, and magnitudes of various tidal energy sinks. Imminent advances in shallow‐water barotropic and deep‐water baroclinic tides hold the prospect of a better understanding of these also. Improved knowledge of oceanic tides and high‐precision satellite measurements of tides are enabling better assessment of some matters of geophysical interest, such as the anelasticity and the length‐of‐day fluctuations of the Earth's mantle. It has been possible to map long‐period lunar tides more accurately and derive their contribution to the Earth's rotation rate fluctuations and its anelasticity at these frequencies. We discuss various aspects related to tides, including tidal dissipation and its consequences, as well as several other topics such as tidal energetics, internal tides, and long‐period tides, where considerable progress has been made in the last decade. Both oceanographic and geophysical implications are mentioned.  相似文献

Recent normal phase silica followed by reverse phase XAD separation has led to the identification of several flavonoid and condensed tannin structures in Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SFRA) (Leenheer, J. A., Rostad, C. (2004) Scientific Investigations Report 2004–5276, U.S. Geological Survey). We have used the molecular properties of one of these structures to define ideal behavior during partitioning of PAHs assuming that these structures function as an immiscible liquid solvent bound to finely dispersed mineral particles. Existing data for the partitioning of PAHs into NOM compared well to this ideal behavior under Raoult/Henry and Flory‐Huggins treatments, and activity coefficients of pyrene in the hypothetical NOM phase and the free energy of transfer were estimated. If experimental data on partitioning of PAHs into synthesized samples of these structures is similar to NOM uptake data, it will be attractive to assume that, a) much smaller components of the NOM complex than suggested by gross molecular weight may be important in environmental properties such as solubility enhancement, and b) the effective molar volumes within the NOM complex responsible for solubility enhancement may be solute, or solute class dependent.  相似文献

A 72-h high-resolution simulation of Supertyphoon Rammasun (2014) is performed using the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model. The model covers an initial 18-h spin-up, the 36-h rapid intensification (RI) period in the northern South China Sea, and the 18-h period of weakening after landfall. The results show that the model reproduces the track, intensity, structure of the storm, and environmental circulations reasonably well. Analysis of the surface energetics under the storm indicates that the storm's intensification is closely related to the net energy gain rate (ε g), defined as the difference between the energy production (P D) due to surface entropy flux and the energy dissipation (D S) due to surface friction near the radius of maximum wind (RMW). Before and during the RI stage, the ε g is high, indicating sufficient energy supply for the storm to intensify. However, the ε g decreases rapidly as the storm quickly intensifies, because the D S increases more rapidly than the P D near the RMW. By the time the storm reaches its peak intensity, the D S is about 20% larger than the P D near the RMW, leading to a local energetics deficit under the eyewall. During the mature stage, the P D and D S can reach a balance within a radius of 86 km from the storm center (about 2.3 times the RMW). This implies that the local P D under the eyewall is not large enough to balance the D S, and the radially inward energy transport from outside the eyewall must play an important role in maintaining the storm's intensity, as well as its intensification.  相似文献

Abstract. When simultaneously presented with equal numbers of four sizes of clumped Mytilus californianus (20, 35, 55 and 85 mm shell length), Pisaster ochraceus (arm length of 70-110mm R) showed a preference for the medium sizes (35 and 55mm length). Prey-size preference was positively correlated with predator size. Mean prey-digestion times (insertion of the stomach, opening of the valves and digestive period) decreased significantly following fiiing of an artificial gape between the valves of mussels. When presented with different sizes of clumped filed mussels, starfish still chose medium mussels, indicating that stomach insertion, valve opening, and digestion rate may not be important constraints determining size selective predation. Measurements of the force required to dislodge mussels from the substratum and conspecifics showed an increasing exponential relationship with mussel size. Size selective feeding may be an energy maximizing and time minimizing strategy, where energy gained from choosing larger mussels is balanced against disproportionately increased costs in energy and time of removing large mussels from the substratum.  相似文献

Tidal ice drift is regarded as an element of the 3D tidal dynamics on the Siberian continental shelf. Two cases are considered: (1) when sea ice is immobile (in a horizontal plane), so that ice-induced changes of tidal characteristics may be treated as if they are limiting, and (2) when sea ice is moveable and internal stresses in the ice cover are described by a viscous-elastic rheology. It is shown that sea ice does not lead to radical changes of the tidal and energetic regimes, although their quantitative changes may be quite significant. In general, the ice-induced influence on the tidal dynamics is less than that on the tidal energetics. Therefore, the commonly accepted assumption that this influence may be viewed as being negligible is justified only partially. We present model results for tidal ice drift parameters—its magnitude, direction, the amplitude of tidal variations of ice concentration and the pressure of ice compression—as well as for ice-induced changes of tidal characteristics and the residual tidal ice drift. Partial attention is given to revealing the zones of ice compression–rarefaction, that is of importance in Arctic navigation.  相似文献

This paper lays the foundation for the rigorous treatment of the energetics of gas exsolution from a gas-containing liquid, which powers gas-driven volcanic and limnic eruptions. Various exsolution processes (reversible or irreversible, slow or rapid) are discussed, and the maximum amount of kinetic energy derivable from a reversible gas exsolution process is obtained. The concept of dynamic irreversibility is proposed for discussing the kinetic energy available from irreversible gas exsolution processes. The changes of thermodynamic properties during gas exsolution processes are derived. Density–pressure relations for gas–liquid mixtures are presented, including empirical relations for irreversible gas exsolution. The energetics of gas-driven eruptions through both fluid and rigid media, including the role of buoyancy and the role of magma chamber expansion work, are investigated. For reversible processes, the energetics can be used to discuss the dynamics of gas-driven eruptions, leading to maximum erupting velocities and maximum eruptible fractions. For irreversible processes, empirical relations and parameters must be employed. The exit velocities of the Lake Nyos eruption and the 18 May 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens are modeled by incorporating possible irreversibility.  相似文献

The on–offshore (cross-shore) transport of sand on beaches is highly time-variable, which has made it difficult to model or predict. In this paper, simple energetics modelling is used to compare velocity moment predictions with field observations of suspended sand transport rates. Separate consideration is given to transport associated with the three main frequency-dependent cross-shore transport processes: that associated with the short (incident) waves, that due to the long (infragravity) waves, and transport associated with the mean flow. Direct comparison between the depth-averaged model predictions, and the in-situ point measurements was facilitated by making the first order assumption that the time-averaged suspension profile is exponential and the wave velocity profile is vertically uniform. An appropriate rippled bed roughness was used to provide the drag coefficient in the energetics model and the vertical length scale of the exponential suspension profile. Despite these simple assumptions, comparison of the velocity moment predictions with the field observations of suspended sand fluxes reveals that this approach has the capacity to predict transport magnitudes due to short wave, long wave, and mean flow components to within about one order of magnitude. However, owing to the limitations of the model, the transport direction of the short wave component could not, on occasion, be correctly determined, probably due to ‘reverse’ transport over ripples. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
