ANALYSES OF THE DYNAMIC EFFECTS ON WINTER CIRCULATION OF THE TWO MAIN MOUNTAINS IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE——Ⅰ.RELATIONSHIP AMONG GENERAL CIRCULATION,TELECONNECTION AND STATIONARY WAVES

The distribution of troughs and ridges of geopotential height,the teleconnection patterns and the propagation pat-terns of stationary waves are the main features of the January mean geopotential height field at 500hPa.Data analysesand numerical experiments indicate that these three characteristics are associated to one another and closely related tothe mechanical forcing of the Rocky Mountains and Tibetan Plateau.There exists a prominent negative correlation inthe intensity variation between the American trough and the Asian trough at high and middle latitudes.Such negativecorrelation,in connection with the interannual variation of the intensity of the jets in front of the two troughs,leads tothe existence of similar teleconnection patterns in North America and East Asia.On the other hand,the different propa-gation behaviour of quasi-stationary waves downstream of the two main mountains results in a fundamental differencein the distribution of correlation chains in North America and East Asia.     

Spatial and temporal distribution of seismicity before the Umbria-Marche September 26, 1997 earthquakes

Spatial and temporal distribution of seismicityoccurring prior to the Umbria-Marche earthquake ofSeptember 26, 1997, are studied. By applying the RTLprognostic parameter, a quiescence stage followed bya period of foreshock activation is observed beforethe event. The main shock occurred soon after therecovery of the RTL parameter to its normal backgroundlevel. An investigation of the clustering process isperformed on the earthquakes with M 3.5,occurred since 1989 in the area of the epicenter ofthe September 26, 1997 event. In comparison to theaverage background of the previous period, theincrease of the area of rupture activated during thetwelve months leading up to the Umbria-Marcheconcentrates in the vicinity of the main shock. Someresults of application of the time-to-failure model toseismicity before the Umbria-Marche main shock, arealso discussed.

PENSION FUND INVESTMENTS: AN INITIAL GEOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT*

Despite the importance of interregional shifts of capital in contributing to patterns of regional development, pension funds, a large and growing source of capital in the world, have received limited empirical investigation by geographers. An initial assessment of the geographic impact of selected pension fund investments controlled by the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB) is presented. A simple investment allocation model is employed to address several research questions. Findings indicate changes in investment categories over time and suggest interregional investment shifts that fail to fall neatly along Sunbelt/Snowbelt lines. Recent SWIB investments may be undercutting the state's competitive position with other – and in some cases Sunbelt – states.

Radiation Patterns For Explosively-Loaded Axisymmetric Cavities In an Elastic Medium: Analytic Approximations and Numerical Results

Summary. A combination of analytic solutions and numerical computations has been used to obtain the low-frequency, far-field P - and S -wave radiation patterns from Heaviside-loaded ellipsoid cavities of fixed volume and varying eccentricity (including the sphere and the finite cylinder) in an unbounded elastic solid. Results show that as the spherical cavity becomes a prolate ellipsoid, S -waves are radiated with strength proportional to the increasing aspect ratio ( A _R) (major axis/minor axis). With large aspect ratios ( A _R > 10) both P - and S -wave radiation strengths approach asymptotically a limit for which the maximum P -wave amplitude is twice as large as the maximum S -wave amplitude, irrespective of Poisson's ratio.
A representation of the radiation pattern is obtained whose mathematical form can be interpreted as due to the action of a centre of dilatation plus a vector linear dipole, both appropriately weighted. the weights are nonlinear functions of A _R. On the basis of numerical results, we have obtained an approximate formula that relates those weights to A _R. the radiation patterns thus obtained are in excellent agreement with the experimental results reported by Gupta & Kisslinger. the results may be of some importance to the investigation of explosions in non-spherical cavities and in the study of the origin and mechanisms of volcanic (explosive) earthquakes.     

An outline of neotectonic structures and morphotectonics of the western and central Pannonian Basin

Neotectonic deformation in the western and central part of the Pannonian Basin was investigated by means of surface and subsurface structural analyses, and geomorphologic observations. The applied methodology includes the study of outcrops, industrial seismic profiles, digital elevation models, topographic maps, and borehole data. Observations suggest that most of the neotectonic structures in the Pannonian Basin are related to the inverse reactivation of earlier faults formed mainly during the Miocene syn- and post-rift phases. Typical structures are folds, blind reverse faults, and transpressional strike-slip faults, although normal or oblique-normal faults are also present. These structures significantly controlled the evolution of landforms and the drainage pattern by inducing surface upwarping and river deflections. Our analyses do not support the postulated tectonic origin of some landforms, particularly that of the radial valley system in the western Pannonian Basin. The most important neotectonic strike-slip faults are trending to east-northeast and have dextral to sinistral kinematics in the south-western and central-eastern part of the studied area, respectively. The suggested along-strike change of kinematics within the same shear zones is in agreement with the fan-shaped recent stress trajectories and with the present-day motion of crustal blocks derived from GPS data.     

西太平洋暖池海温分布型及其与东亚大气环流的关系

采用海温资料和NCEP/NCAR 49 a再分析的高度场、风场资料,利用EOF、合成分析方法,研究了夏季暖池SSTA的时空演变,结果显示:夏季暖池SSTA具有整体一致性分布和南北区域的反对称分布两种空间分布型。根据这两种分布型划分了夏季暖池海温正、负异常年,分析了相应年份的风场环流特征,结果表明:SSTA为一致性分布时,暖异常年850 hPa暖池区上空有一反气旋偏差环流,副热带地区西风和低纬度地区东风都得到加强,200 hPa南亚上空为一反气旋偏差环流,沃克环流得到加强;冷异常年则相反。当SSTA为南北反对称分布时,北暖南冷年850 hPa暖池区上空为一反气旋偏差环流,15°N附近东风气流和赤道附近西风气流增强,200 hPa反气旋偏差环流中心移到东亚大陆上空,长江中下游地区为上升气流,降水明显增多,华北地区为下沉气流,降水减少;冷异常年则相反。
