The geomorphology of Heard Island-McDonald Island is primarily the product of close interplay between volcanism, glaciation, and vigorous marine processes in a stormy sub-Antarctic environment. The dominant landform is the strato-volcano Big Ben (2745m), which is the highest mountain on Australian territory outside Antarctica. Other volcanic landforms include scoria cones, domes, open vertical volcanic conduits, lava flows and lava tubes. Volcanic activity is ongoing from the summit of Big Ben, and from Samarang Hill on McDonald Island. Early, but unproven, glacial sediments may exist within the Late Miocene - Early Pliocene Drygalski Formation, which forms a 300m high plateau along the northern coast of Heard Island. Growth of the present glaciers, some of which reach sea level, has been a response to progressive growth of the volcanoes. A variety of erosional and depositional glacial landforms is present, including major lateral moraines and extensive hummocky moraines. Vigorous longshore drift and an abundant sediment supply have produced a large spit at the downdrift end of the island, and formed bars from reworked glacigenic sediment that now impound proglacial estuarine lagoons, some of which have grown rapidly over recent decades as tidewater glaciers have retreated. Integrated study of the volcanic, glacial and coastal sequences offers the possibility of constructing a well-dated record of climate change. Research into the geomorphology, surficial sediments, and contemporary geomorphological processes, including glaciofluvial sediment flux, is also important as an aid to environmental management on land, and to management of the adjacent marine environment.  相似文献

实验研究表明: 在变形破坏过程中, 干燥砂岩电阻率略有下降, 变化幅度小; 少量含水的砂岩电阻率下降幅度大; 含水量多的砂岩电阻率有下降-上升-下降的变化, 变化幅度又小;而完全水饱和的砂岩除初期电阻率有所下降外, 变化更小。更精确的观察表明: 干燥砂岩, 破裂前电阻率有升高的迹象; 少量含水的样品, 破裂前电阻率单调下降; 含水量较多和水饱和的样品, 破裂前电阻率有先升高后降低的变化。这些有可能给出中短期前兆特征的提示。对电阻率变化的机理给出了解释。  相似文献

The huge comendite ignimbrite- forming eruption of Tianchi Volcano maintained a stable plinian column during its earlier stage of eruption, and succeeded a collapsing of the column producing pumiceous ignimbrite deposits. It is estimated that the column height (Hb) varied from 20km to 10km in its eruption period, with a maximum height of 25km in the eruption peak. Its umbrella cloud spread into the stratosphere with a top height of 35km (Ht). The dense lithics whose diameter exceeded 8cm followed a ballistics trajectory in a 3km - high gas thrust region, while the smaller lithics and pumices entered the convection region in the column. The initial magma temperature was 780℃. The comendite magma had an exit velocity of 300m/s, volatile content of about 1wt% and lithics of 8.5wt%. From a 400m - wide vent the magma was expelled out with a mass eruption rate of 108.36kg/s, corresponding to a volume rate of 104.95m3/s. Over 1. 3436 × 1019J of energy had been released from Tianchi Volcano, of which the kinetic proportion was about 8 %. The plume had a temperature of -50℃ at the base focus of the cloud and a upward speed of 215m/s. The cloud spread out at a gradually downspeed with the increasement of distance from its center. For example, at a distance of 25km from its center the spreading velocity is about 250m/s, and is about 60m/s at distance of 100km. The main part of the plinian column, that is the convection region, once occurred in the height between 3 to 25km, and its maximum width was about 13km in radius.  相似文献

Repeated surveys of a short channelized reach of the North Nashwaaksis Stream near Fredericton, N.B. over the period 1971-1981 provide the basis for evaluating the type and magnitude of some physical and botanical changes in the study reach. In 1967 a 200 m reach of the stream was shortened by about 10 per cent by cutting a new channel through a pasture. The original channel was protected by a dense growth of shrubs along its banks. The average width of the top of the channel in the channelized reach widened from 11 m to 17 m in response to a major flood in 1973. Rough estimates indicate that as much as 78 per cent of the published suspended-sediment load associated with the flood could reasonably have been derived from the banks in this short channelized reach. During the 1973 flood, a mid-channel bar was formed in the portion of the channel which experienced the most widening. Subsequent to the flood, the mid-channel bar was first colonized by sedges, and then by alders. By 1981, the width of the low flow channel in the channelized reach was about the same as that for the unmodified upstream reaches. This case study provides useful information for those planning channelization projects on small to intermediate size streams in humid temperate areas.  相似文献

Feedback mechanisms, which operate upstream through drawdown and backwater effects and downstream through sediment discharge are responsible for channel evolution. By combining these mechanisms with channel processes it euables a dynamic process-response model to be developed to simulate the initial evolution of straight gravel-bed channels. When erosion commences on a land surface, sediment entrained in the headwater reach by hydraulic action is selectively transported, deposited and reworked. This produces a damped oscillation between degradation and aggradation as the channel and valley respond to spatial and temporal variations in sediment calibre and hydraulic conditions. The initial cut and fill phases are responsible for valley incision and floodplain development while secondary and subsequent activity can produce river terraces. Eventually sediment entrainment in the headwaters declines as slopes are reduced. Subsequent channel evolution is relatively insignificant because it is dependent on local weathering activity producing material that can be transported on declining slopes. Therefore landforms produced during the initial phase of development, when local weathering was non-limiting, dominate the landscape.  相似文献

The concept of causality has been a fundamental principle of scientific investigation for many centuries. Recently, however, there has been a significant reappraisal of the philosophical basis of the concept of causality and this has important implications for future geomorphological research. It is now recognized that there are two approaches to the study of relations between variables. Conventionally knowledge was divided into classes and, on the basis of time precedence, causal relations were defined. While this approach enables static systems to be analysed it does not apply to dynamic systems which exhibit mutual causality. This traditional view of knowledge became obsolete with the introduction of the concept of the continuum. Algebraic techniques now enable the solution of systems of simultaneous equations, provided that there are as many equations as unknowns. Significantly this approach applies to dynamic as well as static systems. Further advances in fluvial geomorphological research are dependent on the adoption of mathematical reasoning. This will concentrate research on the mode and rate of operation of channel processes and feedback mechanisms. Given this information it will be possible to develop a static process-response model to explain and predict channel response to a set of input conditions, and a dynamic model to simulate channel development through time and space.  相似文献

High-resolution topography data sets have improved the spatial and temporal scales at which we are able to investigate the landscape through the analysis of landform attributes and the computation of topographic changes. Yet, to date, there have been only limited attempts to infer key geomorphic processes in terms of contributions to shaping the landscape. Highly erodible landscapes such as badlands provide an ideal demonstration of such an approach owing to the rapid changes observed over a relatively short time frame. In this technical note we present the Mapping Geomorphic Processes in the Environment (MaGPiE): a new algorithm that allows mapping of geomorphic process signatures through analysis of repeat high-resolution topography data sets. The method is demonstrated in an experimental badland located in the southern central Pyrenees. MaGPiE is a geographic information system (GIS)-based algorithm that uses as input: (a) terrain attributes (i.e. Slope, Roughness and Concentrated Runoff Index) extracted from digital elevation models (DEMs), and (b) a map of topographic changes (DEM of difference, DoD). Initial results demonstrate that MaGPiE allows the magnitude and the spatial distribution of the main geomorphic processes reshaping badlands to be inferred for the first time. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
