Fluctuations of local glaciers in Greenland during latest Pleistocene and Holocene time 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper is the first to summarize research on fluctuations of local glaciers in Greenland (e.g. ice caps and mountain glaciers independent of the Greenland Ice Sheet) during latest Pleistocene and Holocene time. In contrast to the extensive data available for fluctuations of the Greenland Ice Sheet, surprisingly little data exist to constrain local glacier extents. Much of the available research was conducted prior to wide-spread use of AMS radiocarbon dating and the advent of surface-exposure and luminescence dating. Although there is a paucity of data, generally similar patterns of local glacier fluctuations are observed in all regions of Greenland and likely reflect changes in paleoclimate, which must have influenced at least the margins of the Inland Ice. Absolute-age data for late-glacial and early Holocene advances of local glaciers are reported from only two locations: Disko (island) and the Scoresby Sund region. Subsequent to late-glacial or early Holocene time, most local glaciers were smaller than at present or may have disappeared completely during the Holocene Thermal Maximum. In general, local glacier advances that occurred during Historical time (1200–1940 AD) are the most extensive since late-glacial or early Holocene time. Historical documents and more recent aerial photographs provide useful information about local glacier fluctuations during the last 100 yrs. A controlled field pilot has been developed in Bozeman, Montana, USA, to study near surface CO2 transport and detection technologies. A slotted horizontal well divided into six zones was installed in the shallow subsurface. The scale and CO2 release rates were chosen to be relevant to developing monitoring strategies for geological carbon storage. The field site was characterized before injection, and CO2 transport and concentrations in saturated soil and the vadose zone were modeled. Controlled releases of CO2 from the horizontal well were performed in the summers of 2007 and 2008, and collaborators from six national labs, three universities, and the U.S. Geological Survey investigated movement of CO2 through the soil, water, plants, and air with a wide range of near surface detection techniques. This study describes the reduction of functionalised model compounds to their corresponding hydrocarbons by catalytic hydropyrolysis to provide information on the release of biomarkers from kerogens and asphaltenes covalently bound through the functional groups investigated. Five model compounds were investigated, the n-C18 carboxylic acids, stearic and oleic acids; the C24 steroidal acid, 5β-cholanic acid; and the saturated and unsaturated C27 sterols, 5α-cholestanol and cholesterol. The yield and distribution of the hydrocarbons generated were assessed for the model compounds adsorbed to silica and carbon substrates, and unsupported on a bed of catalyst. The n-C18 acids are shown to be reduced to the n-C18 alkane, with a selectivity of >95% for stearic acid, although due to its unsaturated structure, oleic acid is prone to cracking, with shorter chained n-alkanes also being formed. The conversion of these compounds, adsorbed to either silica or carbon is relatively low, even at hydropyrolysis temperatures significantly above their boiling point, suggesting that interactions between the acids and substrate leading to the formation of stable entities (Si–O–C linkages in the case of silica) significantly retard volatilisation. The yield can be increased by placing the compounds directly onto a bed of catalyst, but for low boiling compounds such as stearic acid this can result in volatilisation and cracking at temperatures below that of the activation point of the catalyst. This method produced improved yields of >95% pure product for higher boiling compounds such as 5β-cholanic acid. The presence of the functional group attached to the ring system of compounds such as 5α-cholestanol does not diminish the selectivity of the technique. The double bond in cholesterol resulted in more incomplete hydrogenation with sterenes being generated, and in addition to 5α and 5β-cholestane, diasteranes were also generated via migration of the double bond. 相似文献

We report laboratory measurements of P- and S-wave velocities on samples of tuff from Campi Flegrei (Italy), and a new tomographic
velocity map of the Campi Flegrei caldera. Laboratory measurements were made in a hydrostatic pressure vessel during both
increasing and decreasing effective pressure cycles. Selected samples were also thermally stressed at temperatures up to 600°C
to induce thermal crack damage. Acoustic emission output was recorded throughout each thermal stressing experiment, and velocities
were measured after thermal stressing. Laboratory P- and S-wave velocities are initially low for the tuff, which has an initial
porosity of ~45%, but both increase by between 25 and 50% over the effective pressure range of 5 to 80 MPa, corresponding
to a decrease of porosity of ~70%. Marked velocity hysteresis, due to inelastic damage processes, is also observed in samples
subjected to a pressurization-depressurization cycle. Tomographic seismic velocity distributions obtained from field recordings
are in general agreement with the laboratory measurements. Integration of the laboratory ultrasonic and seismic tomography
data indicates that the tuffs of the Campi Flegrei caldera can be water or gas saturated, and shows that inelastic pore collapse
and cracking produced by mechanical and thermal stress can significantly change the velocity properties of Campi Flegrei tuffs

We report the first measurements of hydrodynamic dispersion in a microfractured granite using a combination of novel techniques. A fracture network was induced in a cylindrical plug of Ailsa Craig micro-granite by thermal stressing, to produce an isotropic network of fractures with an average aperture of 0.3 μm, a density of approximately 4 × 104 fractures/mm3 and a permeability of 5.5 × 10− 17 m2. After saturating the cores with 0.01 M NaCl solution a step in the concentration profile to 1 M was advected into the plug at flow rates of 0.07 to 2.13 cm3 h− 1. The longitudinal electrical impedance of the plug was measured continuously as the solute front advected through its length until the plug was saturated with the concentrated electrolyte. Analysis of the impedance versus time relationships allows the derivation of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient, DL, and hydrodynamic retardation, RH. The Peclet number–dispersion relationship for the micro-fracture network is very similar to that predicted for other, radically different, fracture networks. Thus dispersion may be more dependent on fracture connectivity and length than fracture density and display a relationship similar to that shown by particle beds and clastic sandstones. The high retardation values observed (2.2–4.9) reflect flow behaviour within a fracture network with a proportion of ‘blind’ sections, and demonstrates how such networks can slow the advance of conservative solute components. 相似文献

Large samples of field horizontal branch (FHB) stars make excellent tracers of the Galactic halo; by studying their kinematics, one can infer important physical properties of our Galaxy. Here we present the results of a medium-resolution spectroscopic survey of 530 FHB stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. The stars have a mean distance of ∼7 kpc and thus probe the inner parts of the Milky Way halo. We measure radial velocities from the spectra in order to test the model of Sommer-Larsen et al., who suggested that the velocity ellipsoid of the halo changes from radially dominated orbits to tangentially dominated orbits as one proceeds from the inner to the outer halo. We find that the present data are unable to discriminate between this model and a more simple isothermal ellipsoid; we suggest that additional observations towards the Galactic Centre might help to differentiate them. 相似文献
