Simulations of planetary microlensing at high magnification that were carried out on a cluster computer are presented. It was found that the perturbations owing to two-thirds of all planets occur in the time interval −0.5 t FWHM ,0.5 t FWHM with respect to the peak of the microlensing light curve, where t FWHM is typically ∼14 h. This implies that only this restricted portion of the light curve need be intensively monitored for planets – a very significant practical advantage. Nearly all planetary detections in high-magnification events will not involve caustic crossings. We discuss the issues involved in determining the planetary parameters in high magnification events. Earth-mass planets may be detected with 1-m class telescopes if their projected orbital radii lie within about 1.5–2.5 au. Giant planets are detectable over a much larger region. For multiplanet systems the perturbations caused by individual planets can be separated under certain conditions. The size of the source star needs to be determined independently, but the presence of spots on the source star is likely to be negligible, as is the effect of planetary motion during an event. 相似文献

Computerized spherical harmonic analysis is applied to the morphology of the southern auroral oval. Records from 23 All Sky Camera stations together with visual observation reports for the period 1957–1959 constitute the raw data set. The mode of the derived auroral occurrence distribution function F(Kp, θ, φ) is regarded as the maximum probability contour and yields a set of auroral ovals. The number and the timing of Quaternary glaciations of the Alps are poorly constrained and, in particular, the age of the Most Extensive Glaciation (MEG) in Switzerland remains controversial. This ice advance has previously been tentatively correlated with the Riss Glaciation of the classical alpine stratigraphy and with Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 (186–127 ka). An alternative interpretation, based on pollen analysis and stratigraphic correlations, places the MEG further back in the Quaternary, with an age equivalent to MIS 12 (474–427 ka), or even older. To re‐evaluate this issue in the Swiss glaciation history, a multi‐dating approach was applied to proglacial deltaic ‘Höhenschotter’ deposits in locations outside the ice extent of the Last Glacial Maximum. Results of U/Th and luminescence dating suggest a correlation of the investigated deposits with MIS 6 and hence with the Riss Glaciation. Cosmogenic burial dating suffered from large measurement uncertainties and unusually high 26Al/10Be ratios and did not provide robust age estimates. 相似文献

Two surface‐sediment sampling campaigns were carried out in November and December 2003, before and after a strong swell event, in the back‐reef area of a microtidal fringing reef on the western coast of La Reunion, Indian Ocean. The spatial distributions of the mean grain size, sorting and skewness parameters are determined, and grain‐size trend analysis is performed to estimate the main sediment transport pathways in the reef. The results of this analysis are compared with hydrodynamic records obtained in the same reef area during fair weather conditions and during swell events. Sediment dynamics inferred from the hydrodynamic records show that significant sediment erosion and transport occur only during swell events and under strongly agitated sea states. Under normal wave conditions, there is a potential for onshore sediment transport from the reef‐flat to the back‐reef, but this transport is episodic and occurs principally during high‐tide stages. Sediment transport trends revealed by the grain‐size trend analysis method show onshore and alongshore low‐energy transport processes that are in agreement with the hydrodynamic records. The grain‐size trend analysis method also provides evidence of an offshore high‐energy transport trend that could be interpreted as a real physical process associated with return flow from the shore to the reef. The impact of swell on the reef sediment dynamics is clearly demonstrated by onshore and alongshore transport. Considering different combinations of the vector transport trends computed through the grain‐size trend analysis approach, more realistic and pertinent results can be obtained by applying an exclusive OR operation (XOR case) on the vectors. The main results presented here highlight a trend towards the accumulation of carbonate sands in the back‐reef area of the fringing reef. A search for extrasolar planets was carried out in three gravitational microlensing events of high magnification, MACHO 98–BLG–35 , MACHO 99–LMC–2 and OGLE 00–BUL–12 . Photometry was derived from observational images by the MOA and OGLE groups using an image subtraction technique. For MACHO 98–BLG–35 , additional photometry derived from the MPS and PLANET groups was included. Planetary modelling of the three events was carried out in a supercluster computing environment. The estimated probability for explaining the data on MACHO 98–BLG–35 without a planet is <1 per cent. The best planetary model has a planet of mass ∼(0.4–1.5)× M Earth at a projected radius of either ∼1.5 or ∼2.3 au. We show how multiplanet models can be applied to the data. We calculate exclusion regions for the three events and find that Jupiter-mass planets can be excluded with projected radii from as wide as about 30 au to as close as around 0.5 au for MACHO 98–BLG–35 and OGLE 00–BUL–12 . For MACHO 99–LMC–2 , the exclusion region extends out to around 10 au and constitutes the first limit placed on a planetary companion to an extragalactic star. We derive a particularly high peak magnification of ∼160 for OGLE 00–BUL–12 . We discuss the detectability of planets with masses as low as Mercury in this and similar events. 相似文献

We present a catalogue of 167 eclipsing binary stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) derived from the data base of time-series photometry for 400 000 SMC stars acquired by the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA) project during 1997. We print coordinates, ephemerides, magnitudes and light curves for the 35 new detections; similar data and finding charts are available electronically for the whole catalogue. The majority of periods lie within the range 0.4 to 20 d; six systems are possibly eccentric while 14 are probably or certainly so. We report on the identification of cyclical changes in the orbital period of the eclipsing dwarf novae V2051 Ophiuchi and V4140 Sagittarii. We used sets of white dwarf mid-eclipse timings to construct observed-minus-calculated diagrams covering, respectively, 25 and 16 yr of observations. The V2051 Oph data present cyclical variations that can be fitted by a linear plus sinusoidal function with period of 22 ± 2 yr and amplitude of 17 ± 3 s . The statistical significance of this period by an F-test is larger than 99.9 per cent. The V4140 Sgr data present cyclical variations of similar amplitude and period of 6.9 ± 0.3 yr which are statistically significant at the 99.7 per cent level. We derive upper limits for secular period changes of and for V2051 Oph and V4140 Sgr, respectively.
We have combined our results with those in the literature to construct a diagram of the amplitude versus period of the modulation for a sample of 11 eclipsing cataclysmic variables (CVs). If the cyclical period changes are the consequence of a solar-type magnetic activity cycle in the secondary star, then magnetic activity is a widespread phenomenon in CVs, being equally common among long- and short-period systems. This gives independent evidence that the magnetic field (and activity) of the secondary stars of CVs do not disappear when they become fully convective. We also find that the fractional cycle period changes of the short-period CVs are systematically smaller than those of the long-period CVs. 相似文献
