We investigated the effects of river floods on the macrobenthic community of the intertidal flat in the Ohta River Estuary, Japan, from 2005 to 2010. Sediment erosion by flood events ranged from about 2–3 cm to 12 cm, and the salinity dropped to 0‰ even during low-intensity flood events. Cluster analysis of the macrobenthic population showed that the community structure was controlled by the physical disturbance, decreased salinity, or both. The opportunistic polychaete Capitella sp. was the most dominant species in all clusters, and populations of the long-lived polychaete Ceratonereis erythraeensis increased in years with stable flow and almost disappeared in years with intense flooding. The bivalve Musculista senhousia was also an important opportunistic species that formed mats in summer of the stable years and influenced the structure of the macrobenthic community. Our results demonstrate the substantial effects of flood events on the macrobenthic community structure.  相似文献

We propose and validate a linear regression model which enables us to predict the summer (June–August) mean of the monthly 90th percentile of significant wave heights (H90) in the western North Pacific (WNP). The most prevailing interannual variability of H90 is identified by applying an Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis to H90 obtained from the ERA-40 wave reanalysis as well as from the optimally interpolated TOPEX/Poseidon (OITP) wave data. It is found that the increase of H90 is correlated with cyclonic circulation in the WNP which links with warm SST anomalies in the Niño-3.4 region. We adopt zonal wind anomaly averaged over the region 5°N–15°N, 130°E–160°E (U10N) as a predictor of the first principal component (PC1) of H90, since U10N is closely correlated with the PC1 of H90. It is revealed that regression models obtained from two different wave datasets are nearly identical. The predictability of the regression model is assessed in terms of the reduction of the root-mean-square (rms) errors between H90 and the reconstructed data. The predictor is found to be successful in reducing the rms errors by up to 40% for the ERA-40 wave reanalysis and by up to 70% for the OITP wave data within the latitudinal band 10°N–25°N, though rms errors exceeding 0.3 m still remain, particularly in the East China Sea.  相似文献

The applicability of three different wave-propagation models in nonlinear dispersive wave fields has been investigated. The numerical models tested here are based on three different wave theories: a fully nonlinear potential theory, a Stokes second-order theory, and a Boussinesq-type theory with an improved dispersion relation. Physical experiments and computations were conducted for wave evolutions during passage over a submerged shelf under various wave conditions. As expected, the fully nonlinear solutions agree better with the measurements than do the other solutions. Although the second-order solution has sufficient accuracy for smaller-amplitude wave cases, the truncation after the third harmonics causes significant discrepancies in wave form for larger waves. In addition, the second-order model markedly overestimates the first- and second-harmonic amplitudes in transmitted waves. The Boussinesq model provides excellent predictions of wave profile over the shelf even in larger wave cases. However, this model also overestimates the magnitudes of several higher harmonics in transmitted waves. These facts may indicate that energy transfer from bound components into free waves in these higher harmonics cannot be accurately evaluated by the Boussinesq-type equations.  相似文献

The present study examined the influence of aSargassum forest on the spatial and temporal distributions of water temperature in a small cove on a time scale of the order of hours. Water temperature and algal density were measured along a fixed transect at the cove for almost 2 days. The measurements were carried out in May 1977 during the season of luxuriant seaweed growth, and in August during the season of little growth. The average standing crop per unit volume, named the spatial algal density, was employed as a means of expressing the growth condition of the seaweed forest along the transect. Using the spatial algal density and by analyzing water temperature distribution the following facts were revealed. The diurnal fluctuation of water temperature was influenced by theSargassum forest during the season of luxuriant growth, and the seaweed forest delayed the ascent and descent of water temperature, especially under its canopy, on a time scale of the order of hours, i.e., the temperature distribution patterns were influenced by the heights and densities of theSargassum forest during its season of luxuriant growth. It is thought that these phenomena are brought about by two effects: one is the absorption by the seaweed forest of short-wave radiation passing through the sea surface, and the other is the suppression of convection by the seaweed.  相似文献

New high-pressure orthorhombic (GdFeO3-type) perovskite polymorphs of MnSnO3 and FeTiO3 have been observed using in situ powder X-ray diffraction in a diamond-anvil cell with synchrotron radiation. The materials are produced by the compression of the lithium niobate polymorphs of MnSnO3 and FeTiO3 at room temperature. The lithium niobate to perovskite transition occurs reversibly at 7 GPa in MnSnO3, with a volume change of -1.5%, and at 16 GPa in FeTiO3, with a volume change of -2.8%. Both transitions show hysteresis at room temperature. For MnSnO3 perovskite at 7.35 (8) GPa, the orthorhombic cell parameters are a=5.301 (2) A, b=5.445 (2) Å, c=7.690 (8) Å and V= 221.99 (15) Å3. Volume compression data were collected between 7 and 20 GPa. The bulk modulus calculated from the compression data is 257 (18) GPa in this pressure region. For FeTiO3 perovskite at 18.0 (5) GPa, cell parameters are a=5.022 (6) Å, b=5.169 (5) Å, c=7.239 (9) Å and V= 187.94 (36) Å3. Based on published data on the quench phases, the FeTiO3 perovskite breaks down to a rocksalt + baddelyite mixture of FeO and TiO2 at 23 GPa. This is the first experimental verification of the pressure-induced breakdown of a perovskite to simple oxides.  相似文献

Background

Unlike in the developed countries, Ethiopia does not have carbon inventories and databank to monitor and enhance carbon sequestration potential of different forests. Only small efforts have been made so far to assess the biomass and soil carbon sequestration at micro-level. This study was carried out to obtain sufficient information about the carbon stock potential of Gerba-Dima forest in south-western Ethiopia. A total of 90 sample plots were laid by employing stratified random sampling. Nested plots were used to collect data of the four carbon pools. For trees with a diameter range of 5 cm < diameter < 20 cm, the carbon stock was assessed from a plot size of 49 m2 (7 m * 7 m). For trees with a diameter range of 20 cm < diameter < 50 cm, the carbon stock was assessed from a plot size of 625 m2 (25 m * 25 m). For trees > 50 cm diameter, an additional larger sample of 35 * 35 m2 was used. Litter, herb and soil data were collected from 1 m2 subplot established at the center of each nested plot. To compute the above ground biomass carbon stock of trees and shrubs with DBH > 5 cm, their DBH and height were measured. The biomass carbon assessment of woody species having DBH < 5 cm, litter and herb were conducted by measuring their fresh weight in the field and dry weight in the laboratory.

Results

The mean total carbon stock density of Gerba-Dima forest was found to be 508.9 tons carbon ha−1, out of which 243.8, 45.97, 0.03 and 219.1 tons carbon ha−1 were stored in the above ground biomass, below ground biomass, litter biomass and soil organic carbon, respectively.

Conclusions

The existence of high carbon stock in the study forest shows the potential of the area for climate change mitigation. Thus, all stakeholders at the local and national level should work together to implement effective conservation measures and get benefit from the biocarbon fund.

Since August 2000, we have recorded the total intensity of the geomagnetic field at the summit area of Kuchi-erabu-jima volcano, where phreatic eruptions have repeatedly occurred. A time series analysis has shown that the variations in the geomagnetic field since 2001 have a strong relationship to an increase in volcanic activity. These variations indicate thermal demagnetization of the subsurface around the presently active crater. The demagnetization source for the early variations, until summer 2002, was estimated at about 200 m below sea level. For the variations since 2003, the source was modeled on the basis of the expansion of a uniformly magnetized ellipsoid. The modeling result showed that the source is located at 300 m above sea level beneath the crater. We carried out an audio-frequency magnetotelluric survey with the aim of obtaining a relation between the demagnetization source and the shallow structure of the volcano. A two-dimensional inversion applied to the data detected two good conductors, a shallow thin one which is restricted to a region around the summit area, while the other extends over the edifice at depths between 200 and 800 m. These conductors are regarded as clay-rich layers with low permeability, which were assumed to be generated through hydrothermal alteration. The demagnetization source for the early variations was possibly located at the lower part of the deep conductor and the source after 2003 lies between the two conductors, where groundwater is considered to be abundant. Based on these results, as well as on seismological, geodetic, and geochemical information, we propose a heating process of the Kuchi-erabu-jima volcano. In the initial stage, high-temperature volcanic gases supplied from the deep-seated magma remained temporarily at the level around the lower part of the less permeable deep conductor since the ascent path had not yet been established. Then, when the pathway developed as a result of repeated earthquakes, it became possible for a massive flux of volcanic gases to ascend through the conductor. The high temperature gases reached the aquifer located above the conductor and the heat was efficiently transported to the surrounding rocks through the groundwater. As a consequence, an abrupt increase of the gas flux and diffusion of the heat through the aquifer occurred and the high-temperature zone expanded. Since the high-temperature zone is located beneath another conductor, which acts as caprock, we assume that the energy of the phreatic explosion is accumulated there.  相似文献

Using a DIA-type, cubic-anvil, high-pressure apparatus (SAM-85) in conjunction with in situ X-ray diffraction, we have investigated phase relations between coesite and stishovite up to 12 GPa and 1530 °C using synthetic powders of the two phases as the starting materials. The phase transition between coesite and stishovite was identified by observing the first appearance of a phase that did not already exist or by a change in the relative intensity of the two patterns. In most experiments, the diffraction patterns on samples were collected within 10 minutes after reaching a pressure and temperature condition. On this time scale, two phase boundaries associated with the coesite-stishovite transition have been determined: (1) for the stishovite-to-coesite transition, observations were made in the temperature range of 950–1530 °C, and (2) for the coesite-to-stishovite transition from 500 to 1300 °C. These observations reveal that there exists a critical temperature of about 1000 °C to constrain the coesite-stishovite equilibrium phase boundary. Above this temperature, both boundaries are linear, have positive dP/dT slopes, and lie within a pressure interval of 0.4 GPa. Below this temperature, the dP/dT slope for the stishovite-to-coesite phase boundary becomes significantly larger and that for the coesite-tostishovite phase boundary changes from positive to negative. As a result, an equilibrium phase boundary can only be determined from the results above 1000 °C and is described by a linear equation P (GPa)=6.1 (4)+ 0.0026 (2) T (°C). This dP/dT slope is in good agreement with that of Zhang et al. (1993) but more than twice that of Yagi and Akimoto (1976). For the kinetics of the phase transition, preliminary rate data were obtained for the stishovite-to-coesite transition at 1160 and 1430 °C and are in agreement with the simple geometric transformation model of Avrami and Cahn.  相似文献
