Zooplankton biomass consisting of large and small-size copepods, copepod nauplii and tintinnids were investigated over a period of one year at two stations in Funka Bay, Japan. The food requirement of zooplankton was also estimated using the method of Ikeda and Motoda. Estimated total carbon requirement of zooplankton in the coastal and central parts of the bay was equivalent to 52 and 38% of the annual primary production, respectively. These corresponded to zooplankton production of 12–13 gC·m–2·yr–1.The total carbon requirement at each station increased to 63 and 74% of the primary production during summer compared with 26 and 3% in spring or 19 and 17% in winter. The microzooplankton (copepod nauplii and tintinnids) accounted for about half of the carbon requirement from April to November.Food requirements reached 161% at the coastal station and 194% at the central station of the daily organic carbon production during September. Zooplankton may also feed on carbon sources other than living phytoplankton. Vertical fine distributions of suspended matter and some chemical compositions in seawater were measured in the layer near the seabed. Distributions of organic suspended matter were almost uniform throughout the layer, but others were anomalous. However, with respect to their peak heights and distribution patterns, the tendency of profiles was the same on the whole. We suggested that these anomalous distributions were primarily caused by the destruction of the large flocculent particle on the seabed and by upward diffusion of disintegrated particles. The similarity of profiles between chemical compositions of dissolved substances and suspended matter of non-dissolved substances, was explained by assuming that pore water in the large particle was simultaneously transported with disintegrated particles after the destruction. An equation for the vertical distribution of suspended matter near the seabed was derived, provided that the rate of destruction of large flocculent particle was in proportion to the current velocity on the seabed. The equation represented the existence of the anomalous distribution, which was continuously changing its pattern. Measurements of vertical profiles of suspended matter showed almost the same tendency with the theory. From the characteristics of the theoretical equation, it was expected that the eddy diffusivity near the seabed was 1050 cm2/sec.  相似文献

We report the results of a near-infrared survey for long-period variables in a field of view of 20× 30 arcmin2 towards the Galactic Centre (GC). We have detected 1364 variables, of which 348 are identified with those reported in Glass et al. We present a catalogue and photometric measurements for the detected variables and discuss their nature. We also establish a method for the simultaneous estimation of distances and extinctions using the period–luminosity relations for the JHK s bands. Our method is applicable to Miras with periods in the range 100–350 d and mean magnitudes available in two or more filter bands. While J band means are often unavailable for our objects because of the large extinction, we estimated distances and extinctions for 143 Miras whose H - and   K s  -band mean magnitudes are obtained. We find that most are located at the same distance to within our accuracy. Assuming that the barycentre of these Miras corresponds to the GC, we estimate its distance modulus to be  14.58 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.11 (syst.) mag  , corresponding to  8.24 ± 0.08 (stat.) ± 0.42 (syst.) kpc  . We have assumed the distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud to be 18.45 mag, and the uncertainty in this quantity is included in the above systematic error. We also discuss the large and highly variable extinction. Its value ranges from 1.5 mag to larger than 4 mag in     except towards the thicker dark nebulae and it varies in a complicated way with the line of sight. We have identified mid-infrared counterparts in the Spitzer /IRAC catalogue of Ramírez et al. for most of our variables and find that they follow rather narrow period–luminosity relations in the 3.6–8.0 μm wavelength range.  相似文献

In order to detect iron (Fe) stress in micro-sized (20–200 μm) diatoms in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific during spring, immunological ferredoxin/flavodoxin assays were applied to samples collected from the surface layer in May 2005. Concomitantly, the community composition of the micro-sized phytoplankton and hydrographic conditions, including dissolved Fe and macronutrient concentrations, were also examined. Chlorophyll (Chl) a concentrations were <2 mg m−3 at all sampling stations, except at a station where the Chl a level was 9.0 mg m−3 and a micro-sized diatom bloom occurred. A high abundance of ferredoxin in micro-sized diatoms was detected only at a rather near-shore station where dissolved Fe and macronutrient concentrations were higher, indicating that the micro-sized diatoms did not suffer from iron deficiency. On the other hand, flavodoxin in micro-sized diatoms was often observed at the other stations, including the bloom station, where macronutrients were replete but dissolved Fe concentration was low (0.31 nM). A significant amount of chlorophyllide a, a degradation product of Chl a, was also observed at the bloom station, suggesting a decline of the diatom bloom. The micro-sized phytoplankton species at all the stations were mainly composed of the diatoms Thalassiosira, Chaetoceros, and Fragilariopsis spp. Our study indicates that micro-sized diatoms were stressed by Fe bioavailability during the spring season in the Oyashio region  相似文献

We present an automatic, fast, accurate and robust method of classifying astronomical objects. The Self Organizing Map (SOM) as an unsupervised Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm is used for classification of stellar spectra of stars. The SOM is used to make clusters of different spectral classes of Jacoby, Hunter and Christian (JHC) library. This ANN technique needs no training examples and the stellar spectral data sets are directly fed to the network for the classification. The JHC library contains 161 spectra out of which, 158 spectra are selected for the classification. These 158 spectra are input vectors to the network and mapped into a two dimensional output grid. The input vectors close to each other are mapped into the same or neighboring neurons in the output space. So, the similar objects are making clusters in the output map and making it easy to analyze high dimensional data.  相似文献

Background  

The biosphere models of terrestrial productivity are essential for projecting climate change and assessing mitigation and adaptation options. Many of them have been developed in connection to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) that backs the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In the end of 1990s, IGBP sponsored release of a data set summarizing the model outputs and setting certain norms for estimates of terrestrial productivity. Since a number of new models and new versions of old models were developed during the past decade, these normative data require updating.  相似文献
