This article analyzes the territorial disparities in the level of land vulnerability (TDLV) to soil degradation caused by five processes (soil erosion, salinization, sealing, contamination, and compaction) as well as by climate variations in Italy in 1990 and 2000. The analysis reveals, for each soil degradation process, a typical spatial distribution across Italy. Three processes (soil salinization, compaction, and sealing) contribute significantly to the increase in land vulnerability, which is mainly concentrated in risky areas. The observed disparities highlight a growing environmental divide between northern Italy (an economically developed region, not at risk of desertification) and southern Italy and the two main islands (dry, disadvantaged regions at risk of desertification). The knowledge of such a territorial divide and of the underlying soil degradation processes is regarded as important for environmental policies at the country and regional scales aimed at sustaining the economic and socioenvironmental cohesion between areas that are either vulnerable or nonvulnerable to soil degradation. The proposed approach should be seen as part of a decision-making tool informing policies and supporting the design of management solutions, hopefully reversing disparities in land vulnerability to soil degradation.  相似文献

Many morphological elements in Cuba's landscape (e.g. marine terraces, tidal notches) demonstrate that coastal uplift has taken place, but the rate at which this occurs is not known. Carbonate phreatic overgrowths on speleothems have been found in a cave in Central North Cuba, ~1 km from the present coastline at 16 m asl. They form exceptional and unique mushroom‐shaped speleothems and balconies decorating the walls of the rooms. These phreatic overgrowths on speleothems (POS) formed at the oscillating air–water interface in sea‐level controlled anchialine lakes. U/Th dating of these overgrowths suggests ages that are compatible with the Marine Isotope Stage 5e (i.e. 130–115 ka). These POS have fixed this sea‐level highstand and demonstrate that this part of Cuba has been subjected to a much lower uplift rate than previously reported, that is, less than 0.1 mm/year since the last interglacial.  相似文献

There is a general consensus that the frequencies of the kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries are directly linked to the spin of the neutron star. The root of this idea is the apparent clustering of the ratio of the frequency difference of the kHz QPOs, and the neutron-star spin frequency,  Δν/νs  , at around 0.5 and 1 in 10 systems for which these two quantities have been measured. Here, we re-examine all available data of sources for which there exist measurements of two simultaneous kHz QPOs and spin frequencies, and we advance the possibility that Δν and  νs  are not related to each other. We discuss ways in which this possibility could be tested with current and future observations.  相似文献

We have monitored the atoll-type neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636−53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ( RXTE ) for more than 1.5 yr. Our campaign consisted of short (∼2 ks) pointings separated by 2 d, regularly monitoring the spectral and timing properties of the source. During the campaign we observed a clear long-term oscillation with a period of ∼30–40 d, already seen in the light curves from the RXTE All-Sky Monitor, which corresponded to regular transitions between the hard (island) and soft (banana) states. We detected kilohertz (kHz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in about a third of the observations, most of which were in the soft (banana) state. The distribution of the frequencies of the peak identified as the lower kHz QPO is found to be different from that previously observed in an independent data set. This suggests that the kHz QPOs in the system shows no intrinsically preferred frequency.  相似文献

The X-ray properties of the two galactic microquasars GRS 1915+105 and GRO J1655−40 are rather perculiar. In particular, GRS 1915+105 displays a richness of variability never observed in any other source. Nevertheless, many characteristics of these two sources are not unlike those expected from black-hole candidates on the basis of other known sources. I discuss these similarities and suggest that the connection between these and other more “conventional” systems can potentially lead to a better understanding of accretion around black holes.  相似文献

Hard X-ray states and radio emission in GRS 1915+105   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We compare simultaneous Ryle Telescope radio and Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer X-ray observations of the galactic microquasar GRS 1915+105, using the classification of the X-ray behaviour in terms of three states as previously established. We find a strong (one-to-one) relation between radio oscillation events and series of spectrally hard states in the X-ray light curves, if the hard states are longer than ∼100 s and are 'well separated' from each other. In all other cases the source shows either low-level or high-level radio emission, but no radio oscillation events. During intervals when the source stays in the hard spectral state for periods of days to months, the radio behaviour is quite different; during some of these intervals a quasi-continuous jet is formed with an almost flat synchrotron spectrum extending to at least the near-infrared. Based on the similarities between the oscillation profiles at different wavelengths, we suggest a scenario which can explain most of the complex X-ray:radio behaviour of GRS 1915+105. We compare this behaviour with that of other black hole sources, and challenge previous reports of a relation between spectrally soft X-ray states and the radio emission.  相似文献

The galactic superluminal source GRS 1915+105 was observed byBeppoSAX at several occasions from October 1996 to April 2000. In April 1999 the 2–10 keV light curve showed a long series of quasi regular pulses with a recurrence time of about 50 s. Some preliminary results of a spectral analysis are presented.  相似文献

We report results from a spectral and timing analysis of M82 X-1, one of the brightest known ultraluminous X-ray sources. Data from a new 105-ks XMM–Newton observation of M82 X-1, performed in 2004 April, and of archival RossiXTE observations are presented. A very soft thermal component is present in the XMM spectrum. Although it is not possible to rule out a residual contamination from the host galaxy, modelling it with a standard accretion disc would imply a black hole (BH) mass of  ≈103 M  . An emission line was also detected at an energy typical for fluorescent Fe emission. The power density spectrum of the XMM observation shows a variable Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) at frequency of 113 mHz with properties similar to those discovered by Strohmayer and Mushotzky. The QPO was also found in seven archival RXTE observations, that include those analysed by Strohmayer and Mushotzky, and Fiorito and Titarchuk. A comparison of the properties of this QPO with those of the various types of QPOs observed in Galactic black hole candidates strongly suggests an association with the type-C, low-frequency QPOs. Scaling the frequency inversely to the BH mass, the observed QPO frequency range (from 50 to 166 mHz) would yield a BH mass anywhere in the interval few tens to  1000  M  .  相似文献
