Warm (25°C) hydrothermal springs have been sampled on Baby Bare, a basaltic outcrop on 3.5-Ma-old crust ∼100-km east of the Endeavor Segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The source for these springs is a 62 to 64°C formation water that has cooled conductively as it ascends to feed the springs. This water originated as bottom seawater that probably descended into basement ∼52 km to the southwest at another, much larger outcrop called Grizzly Bare. As this seawater flows towards Baby Bare, it is heated and altered by reactions within basaltic basement and by diffusive fluxes to and from the overlying sediment. Concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Mo in the spring waters are greater than in bottom seawater, indicating that the oceanic crust is a source for these elements to the oceans. At least a portion of this increase probably results from the redox cycling of Mn in sedimentary sources near the basement interface that produces a diffusive flux to basement formation waters. Additional removal of Mo and inputs of the other five elements to two of the three springs are observed locally near sites of venting, where density gradients can form shallow circulation cells within the sediment and diffusive exchange occurs. Concentrations of Cu, U, V, Y, and the rare earth elements (REEs, excluding Ce) in these samples are less than in bottom seawater, indicating that the oceanic crust is a net sink for these elements in this environment. Copper is probably removed into newly formed carbonate and/or sulfide phases. Removal of the oxyanions U and V is consistent with a net removal of phosphate demonstrated previously for ridge-flank hydrothermal systems. Similarly, removal of Y and the REEs is associated with carbonate, phosphate-rich, and oxide phases. Calculated maximum global chemical fluxes from “warm” ridge-flank hydrothermal systems such as Baby Bare are insignificant relative to riverine fluxes for these elements, except possibly for Mn and Mo. The impact on global geochemical budgets for these elements from lower temperature (<25°C) alteration on ridge flanks is still unknown, but it may well be larger than for warm ridge flanks.  相似文献

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are threatened by loss of sagebrush habitat and the spread of West Nile virus throughout much of their range in North America; yet, future impacts of climate change on these potential stressors have not been addressed. Here, we aim to quantify the potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of climatically suitable habitat for sagebrush and on transmission risk for West Nile virus in the eastern portion of the species’ range. We used Maxent to model the current and future climatically suitable habitat for two dominant sagebrush species in the study area, and we used a degree-day model to predict future West Nile virus transmission risk under likely climate-change scenarios. Our models suggest that areas with the highest future suitability for sagebrush habitat will be found in southwestern Wyoming and north-central Montana. The degree-day model suggests that greater sage-grouse in western portions of the study area, which are generally higher in elevation than where West Nile virus currently occurs, will see increasing risk of transmission in the future. We developed a spatially explicit map of suggested management actions based on our predictions that will aid in conservation of the species into the coming decades.  相似文献

This work is intended to investigate the influence of temperature-dependent metamorphism of ice on the shape of small depressions in the surface of cometary nuclei. We are mainly interested in the role of initial cohesivity of a nucleus. For this purpose we simulate sublimation of ice from the facets of initially cylindrical depressions in ice of different initial structure. The simulations account for the diurnal and orbital changes of insolation and its dependence on the current shape of the depressions. Our model includes heat transport in the cometary material and metamorphism of ice. We present the results obtained for the nucleus of the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, target of the ESA cornerstone mission Rosetta.  相似文献

The comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is the current target of the mission Rosetta, initially planned to investigate comet 46P/Wirtanen. These two comets have similar orbits, except the distance to the Sun at perihelion, but different orbital histories and different masses. Thus, structures of the nuclei can be significantly different. The evolution of comet Wirtanen was simulated by several authors, while comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko became an object of high interest only recently and is not well investigated. In the present work we simulate the evolution of the nucleus, down to tens of meters below the surface, using an extended version of the model previously applied for comet Wirtanen [Kossacki et al., 1999. Comet 46P/Wirtanen: evolution of the subsurface layer. Icarus 142, 202-218.]. The model includes strengthening of the nucleus due to sintering of the ice grains. Simulations are performed for different latitudes, accounting for the evolution of the orbit and for changes of the nucleus orientation, as well as diurnal and seasonal changes of insolation. The calculated loss of water vapor from the comet is integrated over the nucleus surface and is compared with the observational data. We have found, that the sublimation through the dust mantle can be large enough to reproduce the profile of the total water production as a function of time from perihelion. The required dependence of thickness of the dust layer on latitude qualitatively matches present distribution of the absorbed solar flux. The non-gravitational acceleration in the comet motion together with the simulated sublimation flux are used in order to estimate the mass and the bulk density of the nucleus.  相似文献

A lake sediment core spanning 9900 years, collected from a small lake on western Victoria Island, NWT, Canada, provides a high-resolution record of diatom community dynamics over the Holocene. Ten radiocarbon dates and 210Pb dating provided the core chronology. Loss-on-ignition (LOI), magnetic susceptibility, biogenic silica content, and diatom concentrations provided information on changes in the sedimentary environment. LOI gradually increased over the Holocene whereas magnetic susceptibility showed an inverse trend. Biogenic silica content showed three distinct peaks spaced approximately 3000 years apart. Major shifts in diatom assemblages occurred at 8100–8000, 5800–5700, and 3800–3500 cal yr BP. There is evidence of diatom community response to centennial-scale variations such as the ‘Medieval Warm Period’ (1000–700 cal yr BP), ‘Little Ice Age’ (800–150 cal yr BP) and recent warming. Although recent changes in diatom community composition, productivity, and species richness are apparent they were surpassed at other periods throughout the Holocene. Variations of the taxa within the genera Staurosira, Pseudostaurosira, Fragilaria, and Staurosirella, usually combined into one genus in Arctic lake sediment studies, suggest these taxa provide useful insight into paleonvironmental questions.  相似文献

A high-resolution pollen record from Path Lake in Port Joli Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, provides a paleo-ecological perspective on Holocene climate and vegetation variability within the context of local archaeological research. Pollen assemblages in the early Holocene reflect a post-glacial forest dominated by Pinus, Tsuga, Betula and Quercus. During this time, a lower frequency of radiocarbon dated cultural material suggests lower human settlement intensity. Shallow water aquatic (Isoetes) and wetland (Alnus, Sphagnum) taxa increased after 3400 cal yr BP in response to a transition towards wetter climatic conditions. Culturally significant periods, where settlement intensity increased in the Maritimes and Maine, coincide with maximum values of reconstructed total annual precipitation, suggesting that environmental conditions may have influenced prehistoric human activity. European settlement, after 350 cal yr BP, was marked by a rise in Ambrosia. The impact of anthropogenic fire disturbances on the landscape was evidenced by peak charcoal accumulations after European settlement.  相似文献

This paper presents a multiscale analysis of a dilatant shear band using a three-dimensional discrete element method and a lattice Boltzmann/finite element hybrid scheme. In particular, three-dimensional simple shear tests are conducted via the discrete element method. A spatial homogenization is performed to recover the macroscopic stress from the micro-mechanical force chains. The pore geometries of the shear band and host matrix are quantitatively evaluated through morphology analyses and lattice Boltzmann/finite element flow simulations. Results from the discrete element simulations imply that grain sliding and rotation occur predominately with the shear band. These granular motions lead to dilation of pore space inside the shear band and increases in local permeability. While considerable anisotropy in the contact fabric is observed with the shear band, anisotropy of the permeability is, at most, modest in the assemblies composed of spherical grains.  相似文献

The Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) is a 1500 square degree optical imaging survey with the recently commissioned OmegaCAM wide-field imager on the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). A suite of data products will be delivered to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the community by the KiDS survey team. Spread over Europe, the KiDS team uses Astro-WISE as its main tool to collaborate efficiently and pool hardware resources. In Astro-WISE the team shares, calibrates and archives all survey data. The data-centric architectural design realizes a dynamic ‘live archive’ in which new KiDS survey products of improved quality can be shared with the team and eventually the full astronomical community in a flexible and controllable manner.  相似文献

Synoptic data associated with a sample of 554 heavy rainfall events is utilized to carry out a trajectory analysis that identifies the movements of moisture towards regions of heavy rain. Both seasonal and regional variations are found in the moisture trajectories associated with heavy rain events occurring in three regions in the Appalachian study area. Numerous events in the region west of the mountain range are tied to westerly and south-southwesterly circulations that bring moisture from the Mississippi River Valley and the Gulf of Mexico during the warm and cool seasons, respectively. Many events southeast of the mountain range are associated with southerly to southeasterly circulations that advect moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. Because of orographic precipitation enhancement and a good exposure to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the southern and southeastern slopes of the Appalachian mountains display high frequencies of heavy rainfall, particularly during the cool season. The interior portions of the mountain range and the adjacent plateau to the northwest, on the other hand, are sheltered from moisture source regions and, therefore, exhibit low heavy rain frequencies.
