In this paper a modelling approach is presented to predict local scour under time varying flow conditions. The approach is validated using experimental data of unsteady scour at bed sills. The model is based on a number of hypotheses concerning the characteristics of the flow hydrograph, the temporal evolution of the scour and the geometry of the scour hole. A key assumption is that, at any time, the scour depth evolves at the same rate as in an equivalent steady flow. The assumption is supported by existing evidence of geometrical affinity and similarity of scour holes formed under different steady hydraulic conditions. Experimental data are presented that show the scour hole development downstream of bed sills due to flood hydrographs follow a predictable pattern. Numerical simulations are performed with the same input parameters used in the experimental tests but with no post‐simulation calibration. Comparison between the experimental and model results indicates good correspondence, especially in the rising limb of the flow hydrograph. This suggests that the underlying assumptions used in the modelling approach are appropriate. In principle, the approach is general and can be applied to a wide range of environments (e.g. bed sills, step‐pool systems) in which scouring at rapid bed elevation changes caused by time varying flows occurs, provided appropriate scaling information is available, and the scour response to steady flow conditions can be estimated. The integration of structural analyses with 40Ar/39Ar dating of fault-related pseudotachylytes provides time constraints for the reconstruction of the Alpine evolution of the central portion of the South Alpine orogenic wedge. In the northern sector of the belt a Variscan basement is stacked southward on the Permian to Mesozoic cover along regional faults (Orobic and Porcile thrusts). Fault zones, slightly postdating a first folding event of Alpine age, experienced a complex evolution through the ductile and brittle deformation regime, showing greenschist facies mylonites overprinted by a penetrative cataclastic deformation. Generation of fault-related pseudotachylyte veins marks the onset of brittle conditions, lasting up to the youngest episodes of fault activity. 40Ar/39Ar dating of the pseudotachylyte matrix of 9 samples give two separated age clusters: Late Cretaceous (80–68 Ma) and latest Palaeocene to Middle Eocene (55–43 Ma). These new data provide evidence that the pre-Adamello evolution of the central Southern Alps was characterised by the superposition of different tectonic events accompanying the exhumation of the deepest part of the belt through the brittle–ductile transition. The oldest pseudotachylyte ages demonstrate that south-verging regional thrusting in the central Southern Alps was already active during the Late Cretaceous, concurrently with the development of a synorogenic foredeep basin where the Upper Cretaceous Lombardian Flysch was deposited.  相似文献

Pyrite plays the central role in the environmental issue of acid rock drainage. Natural weathering of pyrite results in the release of sulphuric acid which can lead to further leaching of heavy and toxic metals from other associated minerals. Understanding how pyrite reacts in aqueous solution is critical to understanding the natural weathering processes undergone by this mineral. To this end an investigation of the effect of solution redox potential (Eh) and various anions on the rate of pyrite leaching under carefully controlled conditions has been undertaken.Leaching of pyrite has been shown to proceed significantly faster at solution Eh of 900 mV (SHE) than at 700 mV, at pH 1, for the leach media of HCl, H2SO4 and HClO4. The predominant effect of Eh suggests electrochemical control of pyrite leaching with similar mechanism(s) at Eh of 700 and 900 mV albeit with different kinetics. Leach rates at 700 mV were found to decrease according to HClO4 > HCl > H2SO4 while at 900 mV the leach rate order was HCl > HClO4 > H2SO4. Solution Fe3+ activity is found to continually increase during all leaches; however, this is not accompanied by an increase in leach rate.Synchrotron based photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) measurements showed a localised distribution of adsorbed and oxidised surface species highlighting that pyrite oxidation and leaching is a highly site specific process mediated by adsorption of oxidants onto specific surface sites. It appears that rates may be controlled, in part, by the propensity of acidic anions to bind to the surface, which varies according to , thus reducing the reactive or effective surface area. However, anions may also be involved in specific reactions with surface leach products. Stoichiometric dissolution data (Fe/S ratio), XPS and XRD data indicate that the highest leach rates (in HCl media at 900 mV Eh) correlate with relatively lower surface S abundance. Furthermore, there are indications that solution Cl assists oxidation especially at higher Eh through the prevention of surface S0 buildup at reactive surface sites.  相似文献

Here we show the use of graptolite periderm for chemostratigraphic study. Using material from the Aeronian (Silurian) interval from Wales and Scotland as examples, we show that the carbon isotope composition of the periderm (δ13Cgrap.) provides a signal that is locally different but not consistently so from surrounding whole-rock samples (δ13Cwhole-rock). Graptolite periderm δ13C seems not influenced by astogenetic stage of development or gross rhabdosome type and differences between δ13Cgrap. from different metamorphic grades are minimal. Taken as a whole, the Aeronian interval examined shows little overall change, but large variations are seen on the small scale, possibly reflecting very local carbon cycling. For carbon isotope stratigraphy in such rocks, therefore, large-scale bulk sampling will likely reduce inhomogeneities and give more reproducible results. Furthermore, in situations (for instance associated with sea level fluctuations) where terrestrial organic matter has been incorporated into the sediment, then graptolite carbon may more faithfully reflect bulk marine organic matter.  相似文献

This paper deals with the tectonic control on the hydrothermal system that gave rise to Sb–Hg ore deposits in the Monte Amiata area that was one of the most relevant mining district for the exploitation of mercury in Italy. The study area (Selvena mining district) is located in southern Tuscany (inner Northern Apennines) one of the most important mineralized area in the western Mediterranean region. Southern Tuscany was severely affected by Middle–Late Miocene low-angle normal faults, later dissected by Pliocene–Pleistocene faults, coeval magmatism (Late Miocene–Pleistocene) and hydrothermal activity (Pliocene–Present). The Selvena mining district is located south of Middle Pleistocene Monte Amiata volcanic complex. Our structural and kinematic study is based on the integration among fieldwork, borehole and mine data. The results highlight two Pleistocene–Holocene left-lateral transtensional shear zones linked by normal faults, defining a coeval pull-apart structure. Here, the Sb–Hg mineralization, transported by meteoric hydrothermal fluids mainly, is particularly diffuse and concentrated in the cataclasites and in damage zones of the normal faults. Furthermore, a widespread mineralization also occurs in the cataclasites of Miocene low-angle normal faults. Mine evidence suggests that ore-bearing fluids percolated through structural conduits located along the fault planes and resulting parallel to the intermediate stress axis. Geological structures and ore deposit distribution are related to a single hydrothermal circuit, with meteoric water channelled to depth through conduits parallel to the intermediate stress axis of the transcurrent shear zones; then, hydrothermal fluids mainly ascended through the almost vertical deformation zones located at the intersection between normal and strike-slip faults. Thus, hydrothermal fluids permeated also the Middle–Late Miocene cataclasites. This study shed light on the relationships between geological structures and mineralization in southern Tuscany and underlines the importance to investigate mine areas to understand hydrothermal fluids path.  相似文献

Dissolution experiments on a serpentinite were performed at 70 °C, 0.1 MPa, in H2SO4 solution, in open and closed systems, in order to evaluate the overall dissolution rate of mineral components over different times (4, 9 and 24 h). In addition, the serpentinite powder was reacted with a NaCl-bearing aqueous solution and supercritical CO2 for 24 h at higher pressures (9-30 MPa) and temperatures (250-300 °C) either in a stirred reactor or in an externally-heated pressure vessel to assess both the dissolution rate of serpentinite minerals and the progress of the carbonation reaction. Results show that, at 0.1 MPa, MgO extraction from serpentinite ranges from 82% to 98% and dissolution rate varies from 8.5 × 10−10 mole m−2 s−1 to 4.2 × 10−9 mole m−2 s−1. Attempts to obtain carbonates from the Mg-rich solutions by increasing their pH failed since Mg- and NH4- bearing sulfates promptly precipitated. On the other hand, at higher pressures, significant crystallization (5.0-10.4 wt%) of Ca- and Fe-bearing magnesite was accomplished at 30 MPa and 300 °C using 100 g L−1 NaCl aqueous solutions. The corresponding amount of CO2 sequestered by crystallization of carbonates is 9.4-15.9 mole%. Dissolution rate (from 6.3 × 10−11 mole m−2 s−1 to 1.3 × 10−10 mole m−2 s−1) is lower than that obtained at 0.1 MPa and 70 °C but it is related to pH values much higher (3.3-4.4) than that (−0.65) calculated for the H2SO4 solution.Through a thorough review of previous experimental investigations on the dissolution kinetics of serpentine minerals the authors propose adopting: (i) the log rate [mole m−2 s−1] value of −12.08 ± 0.16 (1σ), as representative of the neutral dissolution mechanism at 25 °C and (ii) the following relationship for the acidic dissolution mechanism at 25 °C:

Kveithola Trough, an E–W trending glacial trough in the NW Barents Sea, was surveyed for the first time during the EGLACOM cruise of R/V OGS-Explora in summer 2008. Swath bathymetry shows that the seafloor is characterized by E–W trending mega-scale glacial lineations (MSGL) that record a fast flowing ice stream draining the Svalbard/Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). MSGL are overprinted by transverse sediment ridges about 15 km apart which give rise to a staircase axial profile of the trough. Such transverse ridges are interpreted to be grounding-zone wedges (GZWs) formed by deposition of subglacial till during episodic ice stream retreat. Sub-bottom (CHIRP) and multi-channel reflection seismic data show that the present-day morphology is largely inherited from the palaeo-seafloor topography at the time of deposition of the transverse ridges, overlain by a draping glaciomarine unit which in places is over 15 m thick. Our data allow the reconstruction of depositional processes which accompanied deglaciation of the Spitsbergen Bank area. The sedimentary drape deposited on top of the GZWs is suggested to have accumulated at a very high rate, (on average in the order of 1–1.5 m ka?1) and therefore may potentially preserve a high-resolution palaeoclimatic record of deglaciation and post-glacial conditions in this sector of the Barents Sea.  相似文献

Variability of fish assemblages across habitat structures can depend on spatial scales. A hierarchical sampling design was used to assess the spatial variability of temperate fish assemblages in different habitats and at multiple scales. Underwater visual censuses were carried out along the coasts of Elba Island (NW Mediterranean) on Posidonia oceanica beds, rocky algal reefs and sandy habitat at three spatial scales, namely tens of metres (individual replicates), hundreds of metres (sites) and tens of kilometres (locations). At the assemblage level, there was a clear relationship between fish and habitat type and the observed habitat‐related differences were largely dependent on species identity. Fish assemblages on P. oceanica beds and rocky reefs shared a high number of species, whereas overlap with sandy assemblages was negligible. Multivariate analyses revealed significant differences in fish assemblages among habitats, although there was also a significant habitat × site interaction. These differences relied mainly upon assemblage composition and species richness. Assemblages on rocky reefs and P. oceanica meadows usually harboured a higher number of species and individuals compared with sandy assemblages. Nevertheless, the patterns of habitat‐related differences in species richness and, especially, in the total number of fish, changed significantly from site to site. Eight species showed significant differences over habitats, but they were not consistent due to the interaction of habitat with site. Predictability of fish at both assemblage and population levels decreased with the scale of observation, and the spatial pattern of fish observed at the smallest scale was likely dependent on factors other than habitat type.  相似文献
