Abstract This paper discusses dynamo action in generalisations of the Ponomarenko dynamo at large magnetic Reynolds number. The original Ponomarenko dynamo consists of a spiralling flow in which the stream surfaces are concentric cylinders of circular cross section, and the flow depends only on distance from the axis in cylindrical polar coordinates. In this study, the stream surfaces are allowed to be cylinders of arbitrary cross section, and the flow is only required to be independent of the coordinate along the cylinder axes. For smooth flows alpha and eddy diffusion effects are identified, in terms of the geometry of the stream surfaces, and asymptotic formulae for growth rates in the limit of large magnetic Reynolds number are obtained. Numerical support for these results is presented using direct simulation of dynamo action in selected flows at high conductivity. Finally the case is considered when in spherical polar coordinates the flow is independent of the azimuthal coordinate and the stream surfaces, which are tori, have arbitrary cross sections. 相似文献

The Dest-Or epigenetic Au deposit occurs in a breccia zone within gabbro, basalt and andesite of the Archean Upper Deguisier Formation. It is located approximately 30 km NE of Noranda. Quebec and 2.5 km N of the Porcupine-Destor Fault, an important vertical shear zone that extends east-west for more than 100 km. The known orebody contains 2.44 Mt of ore at 4.29 g/t Au.Host rocks of the Upper Deguisier Formation typically contain 3.6 ppb Au, 0.8 ppm Sb and 4.5 ppm As. The Au values are comparable to those of tholeiitic mafic rocks elsewhere in the world. but Sb and As values are a little higher.Gold values on approximately 30% of the area of the Dest-Or and Bassignac properties define a log-normal distribution with a median at 9.4 ppb Au (P16 at 3.1 and P84 at 27). These are referred to as ore zone halos: they envelop orebody halos which in turn envelop orebodies.An orebody halo can best be defined by close sampling in the immediate vicinity of a known orebody. Around the Dest-Or orebody, this halo is approximately 100 m wide (60 m on the hanging wall and 40 m on the footwall), and it has a median value at 37 ppb Au (P16 at 17 and P84 at 74).Gold enrichment in the orebody is 1900 times background value. There are also lesser but significant Sb and As enrichments (20 /sX each). High W values occur in the ore ( > 30 ppm W), but background values were too low ( <5 ppm) to be established with confidence.Gold analyses in the 0.2–100 ppb range can be gainfully used in the search for blind gold ore deposits: As, Sb and W can also be used, but anomalies are less extensive and enrichment is also less pronounced. 相似文献

Summary The Córrego Bom Sucesso alluvial deposit near Serro, Minas Gerais, probably provided the specimens from which the element
palladium was first discovered. Its Pt–Pd nuggets are characteristically botryoidal, arborescent and coralloidal, and exhibit
an external halo with the composition of palladiferous platinum to virtually pure platinum. X-ray mapping of an arborescent
Pt–Pd nugget from the historical occurrence documents selective palladium depletion, similar to the high-fineness gold haloes
developed on detrital Au–Ag grains under supergene conditions. The Pd-depleted alteration zone truncates inclusions of crystals
stoichiometrically close to PdPt within the Pt–Pd aggregate. Selective metal leaching in the weathering environment can account
for the frequently observed Pt-enriched rims on alluvial platiniferous alloys which may lead to the formation of platinum
nuggets at an advanced degree of weathering.

In the Saint-Aubin-des-Chateaux quarry (Armorican Hercynian belt, western France), an epigenetic hydrothermal alteration affects
an oolitic ironstone layer intercalated within the Lower Ordovician Grès armoricain Formation. The hydrothermal overprint
produced pervasive and massive sulphidation with stratoid pyritised lenticular bodies within the oolitic ironstone layer.
These sulphide lenses are spatially associated with strike-slip faults and extend laterally from them. After the massive sulphidation
stage (Fe–As, stage 1), subsequent fracturing allowed the deposition of base metals (stage 2) and Pb–Sb–Au (stage 3) parageneses
in veins. The dominant brittle structures are vertical extension veins, conjugate shear veins and strike-slip faults of various
orders. All these structures are filled with the same paragenetic sequence. Deformation analysis allows the identification
of structures that developed incrementally via right-lateral simple shear compatible with bulk strain affecting the Central
Armorican Domain. Each increment corresponds to a fracture set filled with specific parageneses. Successive hydrothermal pulses
reflect clockwise rotation of the horizontal shortening direction. Geothermometry on chlorite and arsenopyrite shows an input
of hot hydrothermal fluids (maximum of 390–350°C) during the main sulphide stage 1. The subsequent stages present a marked
temperature drop (300–275°C). Lead isotopes suggest that the lead source is similar for all hydrothermal stages and corresponds
to the underlying Neo-Proterozoic basement. Lead isotope data, relative ages of deformation and comparison with neighbouring
deposits suggest that large-scale fluid pulses occurred during the whole Hercynian orogeny rather than pulses restricted to
the late Hercynian period. The vicinity of the Hercynian internal domain appears as a key control for deformation and fluid
flow in the oolitic ironstones, which acted as a chemical and structural trap for the hydrothermal fluids. The epigenetic
mineralisation of Saint-Aubin-des-Chateaux appears to be very similar to epigenetic sulphidation described in banded iron

The Masoko crater-lake in southern Tanzania provides a continuous record of environmental changes covering the last 500 years.
Multi-proxy studies were performed on a 52 cm sediment core retrieved from the deepest part of the lake. Magnetic, organic
carbon, geochemical proxies and pollen assemblages indicate a dry climate during the ‘Little Ice Age’ (AD 1550–1850), confirming
that the LIA in eastern Africa resulted in marked and synchronous hydrological changes. However, the direction of response
varies between different African lakes (low versus high lake-levels), indicating strong regional contrasts that prevent the
clear identification of climate trends over eastern Africa at this time. Inferred changes in Masoko lake-levels closely resemble
the record of solar activity cycles, indicating a possible control of solar activity on the climate in this area. This observation
supports previous results from East African lakes, and extends this relationship southward. Finally, anthropogenic impact
is observed in the Masoko sediments during the last 60 years, suggesting that human disturbance significantly affected this
remote basin during colonial and post-colonial times. 相似文献

Piton des Neiges (PN) Volcano on Reunion Island offers a rare opportunity to study deposits related to degradation processes in a deeply eroded oceanic shield volcano. Both the inner parts and flanks reveal a large amount of resedimented volcaniclastic material, including extensive debris avalanche deposits. PN litho–structural units, first studied by Upton and Wadsworth [1965, Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond., A 271, pp. 105–130], are re-examined. This review highlights the importance of long volcanic repose periods and erosion processes during PN history. volcaniclastic deposits have been studied in the field in order to evaluate the spatial and temporal distribution of the three main types of PN degradation processes. The deposits of these processes have been classified into: (1) talus, (2) mudflow and debris flow, and (3) debris avalanche. Lithology, frequency and estimated volumes of each deposit type imply that the structural evolution of PN can be considered in terms of the competition between the volcanic productivity and the degradation and erosion processes. The occurrence of huge catastrophic avalanches produced by flank failure is convincingly linked to the basaltic activity of PN, which implies a very low risk at present. On the contrary, mudflows and debris flows pose an important risk due to the high population density focussed around the basin outlets. The Storegga slides, off Norway, are among the largest submarine slides ever known on a continental slope. The HYDRATECH cruise on N/O Le Suroît aimed at a high-resolution survey of an area at the northern boundary of the slides. This survey images in great detail the bottom simulating reflector (BSR) extent and properties, the various fluid escape structures and the sediment deformations. The combination and the quality of the data help to understand the still poorly constrained relationships between fluid escapes, gas hydrates and slope stability in the survey area. Sensitivity of simulated flow fields and bathymetries in meandering channels to the choice of a morphodynamic model 下载免费PDF全文
Morphodynamic models are used by river practitioners and scientists to simulate geomorphic change in natural and artificial river channels. It has long been recognized that these models are sensitive to the choice of parameter values, and proper calibration is now common practice. This paper investigates the less recognized impact of the choice of the model itself. All morphodynamic models purport to simulate the same flow and sediment dynamics, often relying on the same governing equations. Yet in solving these equations, the models have different underlying assumptions, for example regarding spatial discretization, turbulence, sediment inflow, lateral friction, and bed load transport. These differences are not always considered by the average model user, who might expect similar predictions from calibrated models. Here, a series of numerical simulations in meandering channels was undertaken to test whether six morphodynamic codes (BASEMENT, CCHE‐2D, NAYS, SSIIM‐1, TELEMAC‐2D and TELEMAC‐3D) would yield significantly different equilibrium bathymetries if subjected to identical, initial flow conditions. We found that, despite producing moderately similar velocity patterns on a fixed‐flat bed (regression coefficient r of 0.77 ± 0.20), the codes disagree substantially with respect to simulated bathymetries (r = 0.49 ± 0.31). We relate these discrepancies to differences in the codes' assumptions. Results were configuration specific, i.e. codes that perform well for a given channel configuration do not necessarily perform well with higher or lower sinuosity configurations. Finally, limited correlation is found between accuracy and code complexity; the inclusion of algorithms that explicitly account for the effects of local bed slope and channel curvature effects on transport magnitude and direction does not guarantee accuracy. The range of solutions obtained from the evaluated codes emphasizes the need for carefully considering the choice of code. We recommend the creation of a central repository providing universal validation cases and documentation of recognized fluvial codes in commonly studied fluvial settings.
