Coda of local earthquakes that occurred during 2006–2007 are used to study the attenuation characteristics of the Garhwal–Kumaun
Himalayas. The coda attenuation characteristics are represented in terms of coda Q or Q
c
. It is observed that Q
c
increases with frequency. Q
c
also varies with increase in lapse time of coda waves. Q
c
increases up to an 85-s average lapse time. This is similar to observations around the world reported by many workers who
have interpreted this as a manifestation of the fact that heterogeneity decreases with depth. However, around a 90-s average
lapse time Q
c
is lower than its values for lower and higher average lapse times. This is interpreted as an indication of possible presence
of a fluid-filled medium or a medium having partial melts at around a 160-km depth. Q
0, i.e., Q
c
at 1 Hz, increases, and frequency parameter n decreases with increasing lapse time, barring around a 90-s lapse time. This
again shows that in general, heterogeneity decreases with increasing depth. The Q
0 and n values for smaller lapse times are similar to those for tectonically active areas. By comparing Q
c
values obtained in this study with those obtained by us using the 1999 Chamoli earthquake aftershocks, it is concluded that
the crust is turbid and the mantle is more transparent. However, whether the variation in Q
c
values between 1999 and 2006–2007 is temporal or not cannot be definitely established from the available data set. 相似文献

The presence of arsenic (As) in water is of great public concern. Arsenic exists in three common valence states viz., As(0) metalloid arsenic, As(III) (arsenite) and As(V) (arsenate). Arsenite [As(III)] is the most toxic form among arsenicals which, predominates in anaerobic conditions, generally in flooded soils and in the water with high BOD. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of As(III) on the mycorrhization in vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash) grass in hydroponics. Studies showed significant alteration in the mycorrhizal colonization in the roots of vetiver exposed to higher concentrations of As(III) starting from 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 to 5.0 mg/L prepared in 5% Hoagland nutrient solution without addition of phosphate ions. Considerable reduction in the mycorrhizal intensity (M) was observed in all the treatment sets as compared to the control suggesting a negative impact of the As(III) on the mycorrhizal association. Simultaneously, the study also showed that, As(III) is toxic to the vetiver plants having mycorrhizal association however plants with non‐mycorrhizal (cleansed) roots were found to be able to survive for a longer period exposed to As(III). 相似文献

Micromorphology has important application in earth surface process and landform studies particularly in alluvial settings such as the Indo‐Gangetic Plains (IGP) with different geomorphic surfaces to identify climatic changes and neotectonic events and their influence on pedogenesis. The soils of the IGP extending from arid upland in the west to per humid deltaic plains in the east developed on five geomorphic surfaces namely QIG1 to QIG5 originating during the last 13.5 ka. Four soil‐geomorphic systems across the entire IGP are identified as: (i) the western Yamuna Plains/Uplands, (ii) the Yamuna‐Ganga Interfluve, (iii) the Ganga‐Ghaghara Interfluve, and (iv) the Deltaic Plains. Thin section analysis of the soils across the four soil‐geomorphic systems provides a record of provenance, mineral weathering, pedogenic processes and polygenesis in IGP. The soils over major parts of the IGP dominantly contain muscovite and quartz and small fraction of highly altered feldspar derived from the Himalayas. However, soils in the western and eastern parts of the IGP contain large volumes of fresh to weakly altered plagioclase and smectitic clay derived from the Indian craton. The soils in western Yamuna Plains/Uplands dominated by QIG2–QIG3 geomorphic surfaces and pedogenic carbonate developed in semi‐arid climate prior to 5 ka. However, soils of the central part of the IGP in the Yamuna‐Ganga Interfluve and Ganga‐Ghaghara Interfluve regions with dominance of QIG4–QIG5 surfaces are polygenetic due to climate change over the last 13.5 ka. The clay pedofeatures formed during earlier wet phase (13.5–11 ka) show degradation, loss of preferred orientation, speckled appearance in contrast with the later phase of wet climate (6.5–4 ka). The soils over the deltaic plains with dominance of vertic features along with clay pedofeatures suggest that illuviation of fine clay is an important pedogenic process even in soils with shrink‐swell characteristics. The footwall of the Main Central Thrust (MCT) Zone along the Bhagirathi valley comprises a wide zone of mylonitic quartzite and deep-level tectonites. The systematic variation of finite strain parameters (Es, k and v) in the mylonites indicates heterogeneous deformation, which is determined to vary between, simple shear and non-coaxial flattening type. In such a strain regime the outer boundary of the quartz clasts are no longer preserved thus leading to an error in finite strain measurement. In order to supplement the finite strain studies, Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) analyses were carried out on the mylonitic quartzites. A systematic variation in degree of anisotropy (P′) with distance from the MCT is documented and is interpreted to be tectonic in origin. Based on these results it is concluded that P′ can be used as a strain-intensity gauge at least on an outcrop scale, where a systematic variation in P′ values from one part of the outcrop to the other can be established. However, the quantitative relation between principal axes of finite strain ellipsoid and AMS axes, magnitude of principal susceptibility difference (ΔK1 and ΔK3) and finite strain magnitude (ε1=ln 1 + e1 and ε3=ln 1 + e3) were related by a logarithmic relationship with a correlation coefficient of 0.844. 相似文献

In studies on heavy oil, shale reservoirs, tight gas and enhanced geothermal systems, the use of surface passive seismic data to monitor induced microseismicity due to the fluid flow in the subsurface is becoming more common. However, in most studies passive seismic records contain days and months of data and manually analysing the data can be expensive and inaccurate. Moreover, in the presence of noise, detecting the arrival of weak microseismic events becomes challenging. Hence, the use of an automated, accurate and computationally fast technique for event detection in passive seismic data is essential. The conventional automatic event identification algorithm computes a running‐window energy ratio of the short‐term average to the long‐term average of the passive seismic data for each trace. We show that for the common case of a low signal‐to‐noise ratio in surface passive records, the conventional method is not sufficiently effective at event identification. Here, we extend the conventional algorithm by introducing a technique that is based on the cross‐correlation of the energy ratios computed by the conventional method. With our technique we can measure the similarities amongst the computed energy ratios at different traces. Our approach is successful at improving the detectability of events with a low signal‐to‐noise ratio that are not detectable with the conventional algorithm. Also, our algorithm has the advantage to identify if an event is common to all stations (a regional event) or to a limited number of stations (a local event). We provide examples of applying our technique to synthetic data and a field surface passive data set recorded at a geothermal site. 相似文献

Irrigating food crops with treated wastewater is a popular management option in India. This study evaluated the impacts of land application of treated petrochemical effluent on soil chemical properties. Soil samples were collected from different depths from sites irrigated with petrochemical effluent for 2?years and from control sites. The effluent collected was analysed for different physic?Cchemical properties and its impact on Lagenaria siceraria (Bottle gourd) growth. 100% concentrated effluent was used for the study and compared with the control. It was observed that application of effluent significantly increased the major cations and anions in the field. On the basis of the study, it may be suggested that treated petrochemical effluent can be used as an alternate source for irrigating crops as it increases the nutrient content of the soil. The overall application indicates a lavishing growth of L. siceraria crop in petrochemical irrigated soil than control sites. This study provides information for better understanding of changes in soil properties due to land application of petrochemical effluent. These changes must be considered in developing possible criteria for preserving delicate ecosystems. 相似文献

In this paper, impact of Indian Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) data, i.e., reflectivity (Z), radial velocity (Vr) data individually and in combination has been examined for simulation of mesoscale features of a land-falling
cyclone with Advance Regional Prediction System (ARPS) Model at 9-km horizontal resolution. The radial velocity and reflectivity
observations from DWR station, Chennai (lat. 13.0°N and long. 80.0°E), are assimilated using the ARPS Data Assimilation System
(ADAS) and cloud analysis scheme of the model. The case selected for this study is the Bay of Bengal tropical cyclone NISHA
of 27–28 November 2008. The study shows that the ARPS model with the assimilation of radial wind and reflectivity observations
of DWR, Chennai, could simulate mesoscale characteristics, such as number of cells, spiral rain band structure, location of
the center and strengthening of the lower tropospheric winds associated with the land-falling cyclone NISHA. The evolution
of 850 hPa wind field super-imposed vorticity reveals that the forecast is improved in terms of the magnitude and direction
of lower tropospheric wind, time, and location of cyclone in the experiment when both radial wind and reflectivity observations
are used. With the assimilation of both radial wind and reflectivity observations, model could reproduce the rainfall pattern
in a more realistic way. The results of this study are found to be very promising toward improving the short-range mesoscale
forecasts. 相似文献

Late Paleocene-middle Eocene Subathu Formation represents the earliest deposits of the western Himalayan foreland basin. A
large part of this formation is comprised of impure limestone and grey shale intercalations. The limestones contain sole marks,
intraformational conglomerates, hummocky cross stratification and wave ripples. The occurrence of sole marks suggests that
they are developed by the unidirectional currents at the initial phase of the storm that resulted erosion and subsequent deposition.
The intraformational limestone conglomearate also suggests erosion of the earlier deposited limestone hardgrounds as a consequence
of storm associated transgression. The hummocky cross stratification formed by the oscillatory flows during the long-shore
littoral drift. The depth of formation of the hummocky cross stratified limestone facies was less than 40 m and most likely
deposited between shore-face to backshore regions of the gulf similar to present day Persian Gulf. The identification of deeper
facies (shelf facies) from Pakistan and coastal facies from India suggest that the gulf was open from the west and closed
from the east. 相似文献

Jhilmili intertrappean bed (~13 m thick) attains its significance with the recent discovery of brackish water ostrocod and planktonic foraminifera fossils (Keller et al. 2009; Khosala et al. 2009). Present XRD data revealed abundance of montmorillonite > montmorillonite/chlorite mixed layer > palygorskite in five physically distinct lithounits namely: (a) lower chocolate brown siltstone with green patches, followed by (b) brick red clayey siltstone, (c) greenish grey clay, (d) yellowish brown clay and (e) uppermost olive grey to dark brown silt layers in the successionrepresent higher weathering indices and annual precipitation, reflecting cyclic, but longer spells of weathering. Occurrence of M/C mixed layer with the smectite in Jhilmili area is suggestive of their derivation from the later, whilst montmorillonite to palygorskite transformation is ascribed to the drastic changes in the humid to arid climate, where former served as a source of Al and some of the Si and Mg ions for the later. Jhilmili and Anjar clays represent similar charge occupancies at different sites, but later contains relatively higher amount of palygorskite, formed in the arid environment. Majority of the trace elemental data plots for Jhilmili clays lie within the upper and lower limits of infra (Lametas)-/inter-trappeans clays. The continuous release of Cu throughout the succession (mainly in the palygorskite dominated clays) indicates oxidizing conditions. PAAS normalized REE data plots for these clays show progressive enrichment in the HREE contents in the lower part, but, upper part of the succession is marked by positive cerium anomaly, reflecting oxidizing conditions prevailed at the later stage of the succession. These conditions continued, but, were not conducive to HREE enrichment as evidenced by their depletion in the upper part of the succession. The Ce anomaly observed in the middle part of the succession is similar to that form by continental weathering of the basalt, ascribed to Ce precipitation in the oxic environment, thus suggestive of drastic changes in the oxidizing conditions. Thermodynamic data-sets for Jhilmili clays show I/S mixed layer and celadonite compositions, whereas, Jabalpur infra-/inter-trappean clays correspond to Mg smectites and celadonite end members, thus, representing compositional commonality with those of the other clays derived from the continental weathering of basalt protolith. Jhilmili smectites and smectite-chlorite mixtures show compositional similarity with the dioctahedral and trioctahedral smectites and the smectites formed at 250°C, having compositions between trioctahedral smectite and chlorite, thus, assigning high temperatures for their formation, where the heat required for the formation of these clays was possibly derived from the hydrothermal fluids, associated with the Deccan volcanism. 相似文献
