When tunneling is carried out beneath the groundwater table, hydraulic boundary is altered, resulting in seepage entering into the tunnel. The development of flow into the tunnel induces seepage stresses in the ground and the lining is subjected to additional loads. This can often cause fine particles to move, which clog the filter resulting in the long‐term hydraulic deterioration of the drainage system. However, the effect of seepage force is generally not considered in the analysis of tunnel. While several elastic solutions have been proposed by assuming seepage in an elastic medium, stress solutions have not been considered for the seepage force in a porous elasto‐plastic medium. This paper documents a study that investigates the stress behavior, caused by seepage, of a tunnel in an elasto‐plastic ground and its effects on the tunnel and ground. New elasto‐plastic solutions that adopt the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion are proposed for a circular tunnel under radial flow conditions. A simple solution based on the hydraulic gradient obtained from a numerical parametric study is also proposed for practical use. It should be noted that the simple equation is useful for acquiring additional insight into a problem on a tunnel under drainage, because only a minimal computational effort is needed and considerable economic benefits can be gained by using it in the preliminary stage of tunnel design. The proposed equations were partly validated by numerical analysis, and their applicability is illustrated and discussed using an example problem. Comments on the tunnel analysis are also provided. We used an oxygen microsensor for high-resolution measurements of pore water oxygen concentration in semi-closed coastal bays of the South Sea of Korea during summer. The oxygen penetration depths ranged from 0.60 to 3.65 mm. Oxygen consumption rates were estimated to be 9.1 to 59 mmol m?2 d?1 (average: 22.8 mmol m?2 d?1). At the sediment-water interface, the oxidation rates of organic carbon were estimated to be 84–545 mg C m?2 d?1 (average: 211 mg C m?2 d?1). Approximately 38% (~211 mg C m?2 d?1) of pelagic primary production was regenerated in the surface sediment, indicating the tight benthic-pelagic coupling in the coastal sea of the South Sea of Korea.  相似文献

At present, the climate in south-west Scandinavia is predominantly controlled by westerlies carrying moist Atlantic air, which forms a main source of precipitation in all seasons. Past variations in the ratio between precipitation and evaporation (effective precipitation) from terrestrial sites, however, may indicate changes in the degree of maritime influence. Palaeoclimatic archives in this region are thus ideally situated to study past changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. In this study, multi-proxy comparisons of records from three peat bogs and two lakes are used to reconstruct regional-scale variations of effective precipitation in south-west Sweden during the Late Holocene. The total aeolian sediment influx into two peat bogs is used as a proxy for storm activity. The frequency of storm phases increases strongly after ca 2500 cal yrs BP. Dry conditions occur on a regional scale around 4800–4400, 2000–1700, 1300–1000, 700–500 and 300–100 cal yrs BP. In addition, a comparison to winter precipitation reconstructed from four Norwegian glaciers shows similar variations during the past ca 2000 years. This indicates that the climate in both regions was controlled by large-scale atmospheric circulation dynamics of the North Atlantic region. The strong variability of effective precipitation and storm activity after ca 2500 cal yrs BP indicates a highly variable climate.  相似文献

A study was carried out to assess the potential use of satellite thematic mapper (TM) images to produce maps of vegetation-related variables for erosion modelling. In a Mediterranean study area in southern France the (semi-)natural vegetation was described at 33 field plots using four quantitative methods: the Fosberg structural classification system, the cover and management factor of the Universal Soil Loss Equation, the leaf area index and the total percentage cover. After radiometric correction of the image, the spectral TM bands were processed following three different methods. Each method aimed at combining the data of the six spectral TM bands into a single band in such a way that the resulting image displayed optimal information on green vegetation cover. The algorithms used comprise the normalized difference vegetation index, the conventional ‘tasselled cap’ transformation and a locally tuned tasselled cap transformation. Only slight differences were found between the different methods to calculate spectral vegetation indices for this particular case. Furthermore, the correlations between the field variables and image-derived spectral indices are generally small. The largest correlations were found for the normalized vegetation index and the leaf area index (r + 0·71) and for the normalized vegetation index and Fosberg's structural vegetation classes (r + 0·76). However, Fosberg's method results in very general classes, which are of little use for soil erosion models. Furthermore, the spectral indices appeared to be sensitive for the vitality of the vegetation. Consequently, an area covered by a sensed, senescent vegetation will not yield a large value for the spectral index, but its soil is protected against splash erosion. This might lead to a misinterpretation of the soil protective cover when satellite images are used. A final conclusion is that a balance has to be found between the more accurate, but time-consuming field surveys to gather information on erosion-controlling factors and a certain loss of accuracy associated with the use of quick and easy remote sensing methods.  相似文献

We have performed a thermodynamic analysis to determine the internal consistency of state-of-the-art experimental data for olivine, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite solid solutions. The analysis has been carried out between 200 and 2200 K and 0 and 20 GPa. We conclude that the volume-pressure-temperature data of wadsleyite and ringwoodite show very large inconsistencies, which hamper the accurate prediction of bulk sound velocities in the transition zone to within tomographic accuracy. Owing to the compositional effect in two-phase regions, thermodynamic properties, crucial for geodynamic modeling, differ up to an order of magnitude relative to values in single-phase regions at conditions prevailing in the earth’s transition zone. Thermal expansivity in the olivine-wadsleyite two-phase region is ∼23 times larger than that in the olivine region. For the wadsleyite-ringwoodite two-phase region, thermal expansivity is ∼6 times larger than that in the wadsleyite region. It may be anticipated that this differential thermal expansivity significantly affects future geodynamic model calculations.  相似文献

A simple process to produce fine and low soda α-alumina (α-Al2O3) from a commercial grade aluminium trihydroxide (gibbsite, Al(OH)3) produced by KC Corporation Ltd was developed. There are two options for this process with the first one producing low soda α-alumina (< 0.05% Na2O) having a mean particle size of 50 μm. The second option yields a fine product with a mean size of less than 10 μm. In the first option, a plant aluminium trihydroxide containing 0.20% Na2O was first fluidized with nitrogen at 400–600 °C to yield an amorphous activated alumina. This intermediate product was then treated with acetic or oxalic acid, washed with water and heated to 1200 °C to form calcined α-alumina, having a Na2O content of less than 0.05%. A 20 min leaching using 0.2 M acetic or oxalic acid could yield an alumina product containing 0.04% Na2O. In the second option, a new technique for the preparation of fine and low soda α-alumina was evaluated using an attrition mill working also as a leaching vessel at 80 °C. Fine (< 10 μm in mean particle size) and low soda (< 0.04% Na2O) alumina was produced by a 20 min leaching step with 0.2 M acetic acid and concurrent attrition milling.  相似文献

Palynological, paleopedological, and glacial geomorphological evidence from the area of the high plain of Bogotá in the Colombian Eastern Cordillera indicates a significant climatic warming around 18,00014C yr B.P. Comparison of dated vegetation changes, pedogenic episodes, and glacier fluctuations provides the basis for defining the so-called “La Laguna Interstadial” that lasted from 19,500 to 17,000 yr B.P. During this interstadial period, mean annual temperatures in the tropical Andes were up to 4°C higher than during the preceding and following stadial periods, when full-glacial conditions prevailed and temperatures were up to 8°C colder than at present.  相似文献

Sediment textural properties and total organic carbon (TOC) contents of three sediment cores from Maxwell Bay, King George Island, West Antarctica, record changes in Holocene glaciomarine sedimentary environments. The lower sedimentary unit is mostly composed of TOC-poor diamictons, indicating advanced coastal glacier margins and rapid iceberg discharge in proximal glaciomarine settings with limited productivity and meltwater supply. Fine-grained, TOC-rich sediments in the upper lithologic unit suggest more open water and warm conditions, leading to enhanced biological productivity due to increased nutrient-rich meltwater supply into the bay. The relationship between TOC and total sulfur (TS) indicates that the additional sulfur within the sediment has not originated from in situ pyrite formation under the reducing condition, but rather may be attributed to the detrital supply of sand-sized pyrite from the hydrothermal-origin, quartz-pyrite rocks widely distributed in King George Island. The evolution of bottom-water hydrography after deglaciation was recorded in the benthic foraminiferal stable-isotopic composition, corroborated by the TOC and lithologic changes. The Ø18O values indicate that bottom-water in Maxwell Bay was probably mixed gradually with intruding 18O-rich seawater from Bransfield Strait. In addition, the Ø13C values reflect a spatial variability in the carbon isotope distribution in Maxwell Bay, depending on marine productivity as well as terrestrial carbon fluxes by meltwater discharge. The distinct lithologic transition, dated to approximately 8000 yr BP (uncorrected) and characterized by textural and geochemical contrasts, highlights the postglacial environmental change by a major coastal glacier retreat in Maxwell Bay.  相似文献
