In the approaches used to predict the dispersion of discrete particles moving in a turbulent flow, the effects of crossing trajectories due to gravity (or any other external force field) are generally accounted for by modifying the integral time scales according to the well-known analysis of Csanady (J Atmos Sci 20:201–208, 1963). Here, an alternative theoretical analysis of the time correlation of the fluid velocity fluctuations along a particle trajectory is presented and applied in a turbulent shear flow. The study is carried out in the frame of three-dimensional Langevin-type stochastic models, where the main unknowns are the drift tensor components rather than the conventional integral time scales of the fluid seen by the particles. Starting from a model for the space-time velocity covariance tensor of the turbulence under the assumption of homogeneous shear flow, the various components of the time correlation tensor of the fluid seen are expressed in the asymptotic case of large mean relative velocity (between the particles and the flow) compared to the particle velocity fluctuations. In order to provide comparison with the generally used expressions arising from isotropic turbulence assumption, we examine also the conventional integral time scales of the fluid seen in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the mean relative velocity. The most prominent deviations from isotropic turbulence are observed when the external force field is in the direction of the mean velocity gradient: in this case the loss of correlation in the mean flow direction is significantly lower than expected in a uniform flow, an observation that is in qualitative agreement with the few available data.  相似文献

We discuss the present-day sediment transport by rivers, and hence the erosion rate in upstream basins, based on the example of Taiwan Rivers where large datasets are available. After data correction, the values of the suspended sediment load in the lower Kaoping River are nearly three times smaller than those from the literature. On the other hand, we add the bed load evaluated from numerical modelling, despite limitations from data and models. Whereas the contribution of the chemical denudation rate in Taiwan is minor, the bed load is significant and must be evaluated. We point out that biases in data collection may favour high values of suspended load data, and that large series of datasets are needed to reduce uncertainties and smooth the time variability effect. The occurrence of minor toxic elements (arsenic, vanadium and fluoride among others) in the volcanic aquifers of central Italy, with concentrations often above the national standards for drinking waters, has been recognized since the 1970s. However, these groundwaters are still often used for human consumption. With the aim of providing insight into the water–rock interaction processes, as well as into the evolution of arsenic and other elements, water-sampling campaigns where undertaken within a 100 km2 area at the eastern margin of the Viterbo region, where volcanites overlie an alluvial aquifer complex. The samples were analysed and geochemical modelling was applied to characterize the thermodynamic state of the waters. The results indicate the existence of direct relations among arsenic, vanadium and fluoride concentrations and of their inverse relationship with calcium concentration. An evolution scheme of groundwater composition from the upstream volcanic aquifer to the downstream sedimentary aquifer is also discussed. Two hypotheses are proposed which justify the observed decrease of the cited minor element concentrations, i.e. dilution processes and/or precipitation of fluorapatite, which can include in its structure small amounts of these elements. A major goal of the MAX program is to detect and measure gamma rays produced following the nuclear reactions that take place in a supernova explosion. To detect a reasonable number of supernovae, sensitivities of the order of a few times 10-7 γ cm-2sec-1 are needed – much better than possible with current instruments. The approach in the MAX program is to use a crystal diffraction lens to collect photons over a large area and concentrate them on a small well-shielded detector, greatly improving the signal to noise ratio. The crystals need to have both high diffraction efficiency and a relatively broad energy bandwidth. With mosaic crystals there is a trade-off between bandwidth and diffraction efficiency – one can have either high efficiency or large bandwidth, but not both without losing too much intensity through atomic absorption. A recent breakthrough in our understanding of crystal diffraction for high-energy gamma rays has made it possible to develop crystals that have both high diffraction efficiency and a relatively broad energy bandwidth. These crystals have near perfect crystal structure, but the crystalline planes are slightly curved. Such curved planes can be obtained in 3 different ways, by using mixed crystals with a composition gradient, by applying a thermal gradient, and by mechanically bending a near perfect crystal. A series of experiments have been performed on all three types of crystals using high-energy x-ray beams from the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory. Experiments performed at 3 energies, 93 keV, 123 keV and 153 keV, with both the thermal gradient Si crystals and with the mechanically bent Si crystals, demonstrated that one can achieve diffraction efficiencies approaching 100% with moderate energy bandwidths (ΔE/E = 1.4%) and low atomic absorption (transmission = 0.65), in excellent agreement with theory. The use of this type of diffraction crystal is expected to increase the sensitivity of gamma ray telescopes by a factor of 5 over that possible with normal mosaic crystals.  相似文献

Gas hydrates are solid-like substances naturally occurring beneath the oceans and in polar regions. They contain vast, and potentially unstable, reserves of methane and other natural gases. Many believe that, if released in the environment, the methane from hydrates would be a considerable hazard to marine ecosystems, coastal populations and infrastructures, or worse, that it would dangerously contribute to global warming. On the other hand, hydrates may contain enough natural gas to provide an energy supply assurance for the 21st century. This paper attempts to separate the myths, the facts and the issues that relate to natural gas hydrates beyond the doomsday environmental scenarios and overly optimistic estimates. A structural and microtectonic analysis performed in the Liuchiu Hsu island demonstrates that its Plio-Pleistocene tectonic evolution was dominated by alternating NW–SE shortening and local radial extension caused by mud diapirism. Previous models based on seismic data considering both the formation of the Liuchiu Hsu island and the fold development in SW Taiwan as mainly driven by mud diapirism, fail to account for both the asymmetry of the west vergent thrust-related anticlines onshore and the elongated character of the ridges formed by diapir alignments offshore, which rather argue in favour of a tectonic origin. Many estuaries in the world have been subjected to significant human impact since the 19th century. Natural infilling and human activities, including building of embankments, dikes and jetties have modified both the morphology of these estuaries and the distribution of sedimentary facies. The Seine, a macrotidal estuary, provides a good opportunity to study such modifications, as the latest morphosedimentary observations could be compared to old sediment maps as well as to geotechnical drilling data. In the mouth of the Seine, originally a sand/gravel system sediment distribution, has now been transformed into a muddy system. The result is a regressive sequence several meters thick. It is typically fining-up and corresponds to a shift from a distal term (pebbles, gravel, and coarse sands) at its base to a proximal term (mud and fine sands) at its top. Civil engineering works have reduced the available amount of space within the estuary, leading to an increase in the natural downstream shift of the depocenter of mud brought by winter river floods. The deposition area of the mud is today in the open marine zone, where waves and tidal currents render the balance of this process precarious.  相似文献

Major and seventeen trace element distribution coefficients between main phenocrysts (olivine, clinopyroxene, amphibole, mica, feldspars and Fe-Ti oxides) and groundmass have been measured in the alkali basalt suite of Chaîne des Puys (Massif Central, France). The suite appears to be a well behaved crystal fractionation series. We pinpoint key elements whose behavior is closely related to the appearance or disappearance of specific crystal phases in the fractionation process. Ta, for instance, clearly indicates the role of hydrous silicates (amphiboles and micas). Distribution coefficients are shown to vary systematically along the differentiation trend. Significantly the hygromagmaphile tendency (Treuilet al., 1979) of U, Th, Ta and La is variable along the series.The mass balance equations,

where Di and Dji are the bulk and mineral/liquid distribution coefficients respectively, and xj the weight fractions of the fractionating phases, are solved by least square resolution of the overdetermined system, taking into account the analytical errors on data. The solution applied to the Chaîne des Puys suite leads to a coherent and quantitative model of the fractional crystallization process. The suite has apparently evolved in three stages. Each stage is characterized by constant bulk distribution coefficients and a specific mineral assemblage. Amphibole fractionation plays an important role in the early stages. Some intensive parameters (T, ? ?O2, PH2O) as well as f (weight fraction of residual liquid) are also estimated.  相似文献

This text is addressed to both the beginner and the seasoned professional, geology being used as the main but not the sole illustration. The goal is to present an alternative approach to multifractals, extending and streamlining the original approach inMandelbrot (1974). The generalization from fractalsets to multifractalmeasures involves the passage from geometric objects that are characterized primarily by one number, namely a fractal dimension, to geometric objects that are characterized primarily by a function. The best is to choose the function (), which is a limit probability distribution that has been plotted suitably, on double logarithmic scales. The quantity is called Hölder exponent. In terms of the alternative functionf() used in the approach of Frisch-Parisi and of Halseyet al., one has ()=f()–E for measures supported by the Euclidean space of dimensionE. Whenf()0,f() is a fractal dimension. However, one may havef()<0, in which case is called latent. One may even have <0, in which case is called virtual. These anomalies' implications are explored, and experiments are suggested. Of central concern in this paper is the study of low-dimensional cuts through high-dimensional multifractals. This introduces a quantityD q, which is shown forq>1 to be a critical dimension for the cuts. An enhanced multifractal diagram is drawn, includingf(), a function called (q) andD q.This text incorporatesand supersedes Mandelbrot (1988). While groundwater constitutes a crucial resource in many crystalline-rock regions worldwide, well-yield conditions are highly variable and barely understood. Nevertheless, it is well known that fault zones may have the capacity to ensure sustainable yield in crystalline media, but there are only a few and disparate examples in the literature that describe high-yield conditions related to fault zones in crystalline rock basements. By investigating structural and hydraulic properties of remarkable yielding sites identified in the Armorican Massif, western France, this study discusses the main factors that may explain such exceptional hydrogeological properties. Twenty-three sites, identified through analysis of databases available for the region, are investigated. Results show that: (1) the highly transmissive fractures are related to fault zones which ensure the main water inflow in the pumped wells; (2) the probability of intersecting such transmissive fault zones does not vary significantly with depth, at least within the range investigated in this study (0–200 m); and (3) high yield is mainly controlled by the structural features of the fault zones, in particular the fault dip and the presence of a connected storage reservoir. Conceptual models that summarize the hydrological properties of high-yield groundwater resources related to fault zones in crystalline basement are shown and discussed.  相似文献
