The Cape Hoskins volcanoes form part of the Quaternary volcanic island arc that extends from Rabaul in the east to the Schouten Islands in the west, and they overlie the northerly dipping New Britain Benioff Zone. The products of the volcanoes range in composition from basalt to rhyolite, and are normative in quartz and hypersthene. They contain phenocrysts of plagioclase and subordinate augite, hypersthene, and in most samples iron‐titanium oxides; some samples also contain olivine or quartz or both, and some pumice contains hornblende and, rarely, biotite.

Chemical analyses of 29 volcanic rocks are presented; 22 were also analysed for 17 minor elements — Rb, Ba, Sr, Pb, Zn, Cu, Zr, Y, Ni, Co, Sc, Cr, V, Ga, B, U, and Th.

Chemically the rocks have many of the characteristics of the ‘island arc tholeiitic series’, but do not show a pronounced relative enrichment in iron and appear to be relatively enriched in Sr. Compared with volcanic rocks from the northern part of the Willaumez Peninsula, they are lower in K (but not Na), Ti, Rb, Ba, Zr, Pb, Th, Ni, and probably also V, Cu, and Zn: these differences are attributed to the greater depth of the Benioff Zone beneath the Willaumez Peninsula. The more basic of the Cape Hoskins rocks are similar in most respects to lavas of comparable composition from Ulawun volcano to the east.  相似文献

We find the nine bulk flow and shear moments from the SFI++ survey, as well as for subsamples of group and field galaxies. We constrain the velocity power spectrum shape parameter Γ in linear theory using these moments. A likelihood function for Γ was found after marginalizing over the power spectrum amplitude  σ8Ω0.6m  using constraints obtained from comparisons between redshift surveys and peculiar velocity data. We have estimated the velocity noise  σ*  from the data since without it our results may be biased. We also performed a statistical analysis of the difference between the field and group catalogues and found that the results from each reflect the same underlying large-scale flows. We found that we can constrain the power spectrum shape parameter to be  Γ= 0.15+0.18−0.08  for the groups catalogue and  Γ= 0.09+0.04−0.04  for the field galaxy catalogue in fair agreement with the value from Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe .  相似文献

Liquid phase diffusion experiments were carried out to determine whether diffusive isotopic fractionation of a major chemical element (Ca) varies with chemical composition in high-temperature molten silicates. The objective was to determine how differences in silicate liquid structure, such as the ratio of bridging to non-bridging oxygen atoms, as well as bulk transport properties such as viscosity, relate to isotope discrimination during diffusion. This information, in turn, may relate to the lifetimes and sizes of multi-atom structures in the liquid. Diffusion couples consisting of juxtaposed natural mafic and felsic liquids were held at T = 1450 °C and P = 1.0 GPa for durations of 12-24 h in a standard piston-cylinder assembly. Experiments were done using different mafic endmember compositions (two tholeiitic basalts and a ugandite) and a single rhyolite composition. Major-element diffusion profiles and Ca isotope profiles were measured on the recovered quenched glasses. The starting materials were isotopically indistinguishable, but 44Ca/40Ca variations of ca. 5‰ arose due to a mass dependence of the Ca diffusion coefficients. Results indicate that the mass dependence of Ca diffusion coefficients varies with the magnitude and direction of aluminum gradients and the viscosity of the liquid. Some Ca fractionations result mainly from Al gradients.A simplified multicomponent diffusion model was used to model the experimental results. The model allows for diffusion of Ca in response to gradients in the concentrations of both CaO as well as Al2O3, and the model results are consistent with the inferred existence of at least two distinct species of Ca. The magnitude of isotopic discrimination during diffusion also appears to be stronger on the rhyolite versus the basalt/ugandite side of diffusion couples. The results can largely be accounted for by an adaptation of the model of Dingwell (1990), whereby in high silica liquids, Ca diffuses largely by site hopping through a quasi-stationary aluminosilicate matrix, producing strong isotopic effects because the Ca diffusion is not strongly correlated with the movement of the framework atoms. In low-silica liquids, Ca diffusion is correlated with the movement of the other components and there is less mass discrimination. Combining our Ca results with Ca, Mg, and Li data from previous studies, we show that this model can explain most of the cation- and composition-dependence of diffusive isotopic fractionations observed thus far. A key parameter controlling isotopic discrimination is the ratio of the elemental (Ca, Mg, Li) diffusivity to the Eyring (or Si) diffusivity. However, all experiments done so far also exhibit isotopic features that are not yet fully explained; some of these may relate to small temperature gradients in the capsules, or to more complex coupling effects that are not captured in simplified diffusion models.  相似文献

Background  

The dispersion-aggregation behaviors of suspended colloids in rivers and estuaries are affected by the compositions of suspended materials (i.e., clay minerals vs. organic macromolecules) and salinity. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the dispersion and aggregation mechanisms of suspended particles under simulated river and estuarine conditions. The average hydrodynamic diameters of suspended particles (representing degree of aggregation) and zeta potential (representing the electrokinetic properties of suspended colloids and aggregates) were determined for systems containing suspended montmorillonite, humic acid, and/or chitin at the circumneutral pH over a range of salinity (0 – 7.2 psu).  相似文献

It appears that most stars are born in clusters, and that at birth most stars have circumstellar discs which are comparable in size to the separations between the stars. Interactions between neighbouring stars and discs are therefore likely to play a key role in determining disc lifetimes, stellar masses, and the separations and eccentricities of binary orbits. Such interactions may also cause fragmentation of the discs, thereby triggering the formation of additional stars.   We have carried out a series of simulations of star–disc interactions using an SPH code which treats self-gravity, hydrodynamic and viscous forces. We find that interactions between discs and stars provide a mechanism for removing energy from, or adding energy to, the orbits of the stars, and for truncating the discs. However, capture during such encounters is unlikely to be an important binary formation mechanism.   A more significant consequence of such encounters is that they can trigger fragmentation of the disc, via tidally and compressionally induced gravitational instabilities, leading to the formation of additional stars and substellar objects. When the disc spins and stellar orbits are randomly oriented, encounters lead to the formation of new companions to the original star in 20 per cent of encounters. If most encounters are prograde and coplanar, as suggested by simulations of dynamically triggered star formation, then new companions are formed in approximately 50 per cent of encounters.  相似文献

Results of a numerical computer investigation of the geomagnetically quiet, high latitude F-region ionosphere are presented. A mathematical model of the steady state polar convective electric field pattern is used in conjunction with production and loss processes to solve the continuity equation for the ionization density in a unit volume as it moves across the polar cap and through the auroral zones.Contours of electron density (~ 300 km altitude) over the polar region are computed for various geophysical conditions. Results show changes in the F-region morphology within the polar cap in response to varying the asymmetry of the global convective electric fields but no corresponding change in the morphology of the mid-latitude ionospheric trough. The U.T. response of the ionosphere produces large diurnal changes in both the polar cap densities and trough morphology. In agreement with observations, the model shows diurnal variations of the polar cap density by a factor of about 10 at midwinter and a negligible diurnal variation at midsummer. The phase of the polar cap diurnal variation is such that the maximum polar cap densities occur approximately when the geomagnetic pole is nearest to the Sun (i.e. when the polar cap photo-ionization is a maximum).Within the accuracy of this model, the results suggest that transport of ionization from the dayside of the auroral zone can numerically account for the maintenance of the polar cap ionosphere during winter when no other sources of ionization are present. In addition, east-west transport of ionization, in conjunction with chemical recombination is responsible for the major features of the main trough morphology.There is little seasonal variation in the depth or latitude of the ionization trough, the predominant seasonal change being the longitudinal extent of the trough.The polar wind loss of ionization is of secondary importance compared to chemical recombination.  相似文献
