Arsenic concentrations surpassing potability limit of 10 μg/L in the groundwater supplies of an extensive area in the Duero Cenozoic Basin (central Spain) have been detected and the main sources of arsenic identified. Arsenic in 514 samples of groundwater, having mean values of 40.8 μg/L, is natural in origin. Geochemical analysis of 553 rock samples, assaying arsenic mean values of 23 mg/kg, was performed. Spatial coincidence between the arsenic anomaly in groundwater and the arsenic lithogeochemical distribution recorded in the Middle Miocene clayey organic-rich Zaratan facies illustrates that the rocks of this unit are the main source of arsenic in groundwater. The ferricretes associated to the Late Cretaceous–Middle Miocene siliciclastics also constitute a potential arsenic source. Mineralogical study has identified the presence of arsenic in iron oxides, authigenic pyrite, manganese oxides, inherited titanium–iron oxides, phyllosilicates and organomineral compounds. Arsenic mobilization to groundwater corresponds to arsenic desorption from iron and manganese oxides and from organic matter.  相似文献

The north-south trending Kullu valley between Rohtang in the north and Hansu in the south is a wide and open valley filled with Quaternary sediments along the main course of the Beas River. The valley in the middle is drained by the Beas River and numerous tributaries join it laterally. The tributary channels have deposited large alluvial fans at their mouths which form three distinct levels. The Beas River has deposited alluvial terraces, which are very distinct towards the lower reaches and form three to four levels. The upper slopes and high altitudinal areas are covered with periglacial and glacial deposits. The terrace, fan and hill slopes have provided an ideal geoenvironment for human activities including agriculture, horticulture, dense settlements and other civil establishments. The Kullu Valley is prone to various natural hazards, flash floods and cloudbursts that are very common in this valley due to its peculiar geomorphic condition, high relief of peripheral ridges and impact of monsoon winds. The studies carried out so far indicate that the losses caused by these phenomena both in terms of life and property are mainly due to unwise human interaction with the geoenvironment of the area. The paper gives an overview of the geoenvironmental status of the Kullu Valley and suggests the necessity of undertaking further detailed studies including resource mapping for balanced development of the area.  相似文献

In this research paper, we have derived the formula for both the changes in energy (δE) and entropy (δS) and thereafter calculated the change in entropy (δS) with corresponding change in energy (δE) taking account the first law of the black hole mechanics relating the change in mass M, angular momentum J, horizon area A and charge Q, of a stationary black hole, when it is perturbed, given by formula satisfying in the vacuum as dM = \frack8p dA + WdJ - udQ\delta M = \frac{k}{8\pi} \delta A + \Omega\delta J - \upsilon\delta Q, specially for Non-spinning black holes.  相似文献

This study presents a method of automatic drainage skeletonization from flow-accumulated area without the use of threshold which conserves drainage geometry at chosen digital elevation model (DEM) scale. To get all possible drainage at the chosen scale, stream order raster is generated by incorporating flow accumulation and flow direction raster derived from corresponding DEM. This allows generation of drainage network without the use of threshold. Resultant stream order raster, termed as raw stream order raster (RSOR), is tested against threshold defined stream order raster to evaluate its efficiency. Use of RSOR allows extraction of stream heads to greater stream head extent. Again, DEM downscaling takes care of overestimation in number of streams. So, the proposed technique is effective in controlling two basic aspects of drainage characteristics – stream number and extent. In our case, drainage estimated from re-sampled medium-scale DEM has the closest matching with that of the reference topographical map.  相似文献

Phosphorus (P) plays an important role in the eutrophication of river and marine environments. The adsorption-desorption processes of P by estuarine sediment were studied to better understand the P behaviour in the Loughor Estuary in Carmarthen Bay, UK. Three types of models were used to estimate the P adsorption isotherm for five sediment samples from the Loughor Estuary. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm showed a good fit with the linear (data) isotherm. The P desorption from bed sediment was measured as the easy exchangeable P (MgCl2 extractable). A negative correlation was found between adsorbed P in bed sediment and median particle size. A positive correlation was also found between P adsorbed and metals such as iron (Fe), aluminium (Al) and calcium (Ca) as well as the total organic carbon (TOC).

A potential head ward retreat landslide area was identified in Munnar, a hill station in Western Ghats of Kerala, India. This imminent landslide was suspected to be formed in three different stages viz., evolution of plateau region, upliftment of the plateau region and the consequent slope modification which ultimately facilitated landslide occurrence. Geophysical study through vertical electrical sounding reveals that more than 11 m thick soil is still left in an overhanging position in the crown portion of the landslide and the thickness continues to the top of that ridge. In the event of high rainfall, the land can fail as there is no toe support, and the slope angle is >40º. This area is adjacent to a college building and in the event of any further landslide, the consequence will be high. Slope stability analysis using one-dimensional infinite slope stability model reveals that the entire area occupied by the college and the adjacent areas are unstable even in dry conditions. Rainfall threshold analysis shows that the landslide occurred due to very high amount of a 5-day antecedent rainfall rather than a daily rainfall during the monsoon. All these point towards a pressing requirement of landslide management practices in this area. This study also attempts to suggest a few management practices to minimize the effect of landslides.  相似文献
