An In Situ Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer (ISUS) was coupled to a benthic chamber to characterize the bisulfide flux emanating from a warm spring at the Extrovert Cliff locality within Monterey Bay, California. The chamber was periodically flushed with bottom seawater to reset chemical concentrations, which enabled deployments over multiple days. Data from several deployments, each lasting at least 10 days, were used to calculate flow rates, fluid concentrations, and fluxes over time. The bisulfide concentration of the fluid entering the chamber varied from 75 to 4500 μmol l?1. Positive temperature anomalies up to 3.5° were associated with these elevated concentrations. Linear flow rates ranged from 2 to >17 m day?1, while the bisulfide fluxes varied from 0.2 to 80 mol m?2 day?1. The bisulfide originated at depth and was not produced in the surface sediments via an anaerobic oxidation of methane coupled to sulfate reduction. Tides modulated the flow as well as the composition of the fluid entering the chamber. It appeared that a deep sourced fluid, which supplied the bisulfide, was mixed with a second, ambient seawater-like fluid before entering the flux chamber. At low tides, flow rates were at their highest and the contribution of the deep sourced fluid to the fluid entering the chamber was at a maximum.  相似文献

The composition of the sampled melt rocks at the 22 km diameter E. Clearwater impact structure indicates the presence of 8% C-1 material. The meteoritic component is fractionated with refractory siderophiles, up to 30 times C-1 abundances, concentrated in ten to hundred micron-sized, magnetic particles. These particles consist of the Ni-sulphide, millerite, and what is assumed to be a mixture of refractory silicates and magnetite with grain sizes of <1 m. The larger particles have a core-rim structure with millerite and occasionally very minor galena and possibly pentlandite in the core. An origin as a combination of altered meteoritic metal and condensed meteoritic silicate is favored for the origin of the siderophile-rich particles. If 8% meteoritic material is taken as the average meteoritic contamination in the melt, then the E. Clearwater projectile may have impacted with a velocity of 17 km s–1. Peak shock pressures would have been of the order of 300 GPa, sufficient to vaporize the silicate component but only melt the metal component of the projectile. As the meteoritic material was being driven down into vaporized/ melted target rocks during the initial stages of impact, the melted Fe, Ni metal underwent oxidation, Fe was removed, and meteoritic silicate material recondensed on the cooler, essentially Ni metal. As cavity excavation proceeded, these Ni metal, silicate-oxide particles were incorporated in the melt, their refractory nature prevented thermal digestion and sulphur in the melt reacted with the metal to produce millerite on final equilibration. If this hypothesis is correct, it suggests that the E. Clearwater projectile was a C-2 or C-3 chondrite, both of which are compatible with the trace element composition of the melt rocks. Clearwater Lake is a twin impact structure formed by an asteroid pair. It is still not clear, however, what type of projectile formed the 32 km diameter western structure, where the surface melt rocks contain no identifiable meteoritic signature.  相似文献

On flights of a P3-B turboprop and a WB-57F jet aircraft within thunderstorm systems, short term spikes (1–2 sec or less in duration) in NO and O3 were recorded and are attributed to hot or cold discharges occurring on the aircraft fuselage or air sampling inlets. One such spike of only ∼300 msec duration reached 325 ppbv of NO on the flight of the jet aircraft while at 13.8 km altitude. In a lightning flash to the P3-B aircraft, production of NO (expected) and NO2 (unexpected) were directly observed. The NO production was ∼ 1.7 x 1022 molecules/m of flash length. In the P3-B flight at 5.5 km altitude and over a distance of ∼ 275 km within a highly electrically active thunderstorm complex in the equatorial central Pacific Ocean, there was no evidence of production of O3 or CO by lightning flashes or by any type of hot or cold discharge involved in the development of free-air lightning flashes.  相似文献

Nearshore wave and flow model results are shown to exhibit a strong sensitivity to the resolution of the input bathymetry. In this analysis, bathymetric resolution was varied by applying smoothing filters to high-resolution survey data to produce a number of bathymetric grid surfaces. We demonstrate that the sensitivity of model-predicted wave height and flow to variations in bathymetric resolution had different characteristics. Wave height predictions were most sensitive to resolution of cross-shore variability associated with the structure of nearshore sandbars. Flow predictions were most sensitive to the resolution of intermediate scale alongshore variability associated with the prominent sandbar rhythmicity. Flow sensitivity increased in cases where a sandbar was closer to shore and shallower. Perhaps the most surprising implication of these results is that the interpolation and smoothing of bathymetric data could be optimized differently for the wave and flow models. We show that errors between observed and modeled flow and wave heights are well predicted by comparing model simulation results using progressively filtered bathymetry to results from the highest resolution simulation. The damage done by over smoothing or inadequate sampling can therefore be estimated using model simulations. We conclude that the ability to quantify prediction errors will be useful for supporting future data assimilation efforts that require this information.  相似文献

An approach was developed for using video imagery to quantify, in terms of both spatial and temporal dimensions, a number of naturally occurring (nearshore) physical processes. The complete method is presented, including the derivation of the geometrical relationships relating image and ground coordinates, principles to be considered when working with video imagery and the two-step strategy for calibration of the camera model. The techniques are founded on the principles of photogrammetry, account for difficulties inherent in the use of video signals, and have been adapted to allow for flexibility of use in field studies. Examples from field experiments indicate that this approach is both accurate and applicable under the conditions typically experienced when sampling in coastal regions. Several applications of the camera model are discussed, including the measurement of nearshore fluid processes, sand bar length scales, foreshore topography, and drifter motions. Although we have applied this method to the measurement of nearshore processes and morphologic features, these same techniques are transferable to studies in other geophysical settings  相似文献

A coherent, CW, dual-frequency,X-band radar was used to study microwave sea return from the Chesapeake Bay. It is shown that the product of the backseattered fields depends strongly on long surface wave properties. In particular, a sharp line is found in the product power spectrum whose frequency is that of the water wave whose wavelength is in resonance with the spatial period of the beat frequency between the two transmitted signals and whose wave vector is parallel to the horizontal line of sight. Thus, gravity wave dispersion relations can be obtained with the system. Furthermore, the degree of modulation of short waves by long ones is given by the intensity of the line. A broad background corresponding to the convolution of the single-frequency Doppler spectra is also seen in the product power spectrum. These results are shown to be interpretable by composite surface scattering theory.  相似文献

Analysis of 3-m sediment cores revealed that profiles of carbon (C), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe) varied with relative distance from marine and terrestrial sediment sources in Tomales Bay California. Despite relatively high sedimentation rates throughout the bay (historically 3–30 mm yr−1), sulfate reduction of deposited organic matter led to free-sulfide accumulation in sediments only at the location farthest from terrestrial runoff, the source of reactive iron. Acid-volatile sulfide concentrations in all sediments (<10 μmol g−1) were low relative to concentrations of chromiumreducible sulfide (up to 400 μmol g−1 farthest from the reactive iron source). A calculated index of iron availability, used to describe sediment resistance to build-up of free sulfide, was lowest at this location. Recent, upward shifts in reactive Fe concentration and in the relative contribution of terrestrial orgnic carbon (measured as a shift in δ13C of bulk sediment organic matter) in all cores indicated that erosion and transport of sediments from the watershed surrounding Tomales Bay increased after European settlement in the 1850s.  相似文献

Quantifying the role of black carbon (BC) in geochemical processes is difficult due to the heterogeneous character of its chemical structure. Chestnut wood charcoal samples produced at heat treatment temperatures (HTT) from 200-1000 °C were analysed using two different solid state 13C NMR techniques. First, aromaticity was determined as the percentage of total signal present in the aromatic region of 13C direct polarisation (DP) spectra. This was found to increase through the low temperature range of 200-400 °C; at higher temperatures, aromaticity was found to be >90%. Second, aromatic condensation was determined through the measurement of the chemical shift of 13Cbenzene sorbed to the charcoals, which is influenced by the presence of “ring currents” in the aromatic domains of the charcoals. This technique was less sensitive to molecular changes through the lower temperature range, but showed there was a smooth increase in the degree of condensation of the aromatic structures with increasing temperature through the temperature range 400-1000 °C. Ab initio molecular modelling was used to estimate the size of aromatic domains in the charcoals based on the strength of the ring currents detected. These calculations indicated that charcoals produced at temperatures below 500 °C contain aromatic domains no larger than coronene (7 ring). At higher temperatures the size of these domains rapidly increases, with structures larger than a 19 ring symmetrical PAH being predominant in charcoals produced at temperatures above 700 °C. Data from this study were found to be generally consistent with previously published measurements using the benzenepolycarboxylic acid (BPCA) molecular marker method on the same set of samples.  相似文献

滩坝是东营凹陷沙四上亚段的一个重要沉积体系。根据岩石中岩屑组分的类型及组合特征、砂岩成分成熟度、砂体展布方向及古地理格局等对东营凹陷沙四上亚段进行了物源体系的研究。研究区存在9大物源体系,其中广饶凸起、鲁西隆起、滨县凸起和高青三角洲为滩坝的形成提供了物源。根据物源与滩坝的关系,将研究区划分为基岩-滩坝物源体系、正常三角洲-滩坝物源体系、扇三角洲-滩坝物源体系;由于物源的性质、供给强度的不同,造成滩坝在宏观展布和储层特征上存在明显差异。  相似文献
