Precise and efficient numerical simulation of transport processes in subsurface systems is a prerequisite for many site investigation
or remediation studies. Random walk particle tracking (RWPT) methods have been introduced in the past to overcome numerical
difficulties when simulating propagation processes in porous media such as advection-dominated mass transport. Crucial for
the precision of RWPT methods is the accuracy of the numerically calculated ground water velocity field. In this paper, a
global node-based method for velocity calculation is used, which was originally proposed by Yeh (Water Resour Res 7:1216–1225,
1981). This method is improved in three ways: (1) extension to unstructured grids, (2) significant enhancement of computational
efficiency, and (3) extension to saturated (groundwater) as well as unsaturated systems (soil water). The novel RWPT method
is tested with numerical benchmark examples from the literature and used in two field scale applications of contaminant transport
in saturated and unsaturated ground water. To evaluate advective transport of the model, the accuracy of the velocity field
is demonstrated by comparing several published results of particle pathlines or streamlines. Given the chosen test problem,
the global node-based velocity estimation is found to be as accurate as the CK method (Cordes and Kinzelbach in Water Resour
Res 28(11):2903–2911, 1992) but less accurate than the mixed or mixed-hybrid finite element methods for flow in highly heterogeneous media. To evaluate
advective–diffusive transport, a transport problem studied by Hassan and Mohamed (J Hydrol 275(3–4):242–260, 2003) is investigated here and evaluated using different numbers of particles. The results indicate that the number of particles
required for the given problem is decreased using the proposed method by about two orders of magnitude without losing accuracy

Hydrogeological investigations in arid regions are particularly important to support sustainable development. The study area, El Daba’a in northwestern Egypt, faces scarce water resources as a result of reported climate change that particularly affects the southern Mediterranean coast and increases stress on the local groundwater reserves. This change in climate affects the area in terms of drought, over-pumping and unregulated exploration of groundwater for irrigation purposes. The hydrogeological investigation is based on a multidisciplinary data-layer analysis that includes geomorphology, geology, slope, drainage lines, soil type, structural lineaments, subsurface data, stable isotopes, and chemical analyses. The study area contains Pleistocene and middle Miocene marine limestone aquifers. Based on lithology and microfacies analysis, the middle Miocene aquifer is subdivided into two water-bearing zones. The area is affected by sets of faults and anticline folds, and these structures are associated with fractures and joints that increase permeability and facilitate the recharge of groundwater. Stable isotope data indicate that groundwater of both the Pleistocene and middle Miocene aquifers is recharged by modern precipitation. The high salinity values observed in some groundwater wells that tap both aquifers could be attributed to leaching and dissolution processes of marine salts from the aquifers’ marine limestone matrix. In addition, human activities can also contribute to an increase in groundwater salinity. A future water exploration strategy, based on the results from the multidisciplinary data-layer analysis, is proposed for the area. The exploitation of resources, if not properly managed, can lead to spoiling natural habitats as well as to threatening people’s health, livelihoods and security. The paper discusses a multi-scale Earth observation-based approach to provide independent information related to exploitation activities of natural resources for countries which are experiencing armed conflict. The analyses are based on medium to very high spatial resolution optical satellite data. Object-based image analysis is used for information extraction at these different scales. On a subnational level, conflict-related land cover changes as an indication of potential hot spots for exploitation activities are classified. The regional assessment provides information about potential activity areas of resource exploitation, whereas on a local scale, a site-specific assessment of exploitation areas is performed. The study demonstrates the potential of remote sensing for supporting the monitoring and documentation of natural resource exploitation in conflict regions. 相似文献

Evaluation of soil top-cover systems to minimize infiltration into a sanitary landfill: A case study
The design of a top-cover system is a very important aspect of the closure of sanitary landfills. Soil material properties, sequencing, and vegetation are critical to top-cover design. To date, very few field investigations have been undertaken to determine the effectiveness of these designs. Results from a field investigation of top-covers proposed for an active landfill site in south Florida are reported here. Measurements were made of each component of the water balance equation: S = [P +I] – [ET +R +Q] whereS, P, I, ET, R, andQ represent water storage, rainfall, irrigation, evapotranspiration, surface runoff, and deep seepage, respectively. Deep seepage, determined using soil water tensiometers, is the amount of water infiltrating the landfill top-cover and is therefore the upper limit of potential leachate generation.Results indicate that the locally available rock tailings (carbonate silt) is an effective topliner component of the top-cover system. The results of the field investigation also showed that the EPA water balance model used to estimate infiltration during landfill design was greater than the actual field measurements. 相似文献

The paper describes a model, which estimates the risk levels of individual crude oil tankers. The intended use of the model, which is ready for trial implementation at The Norwegian Coastal Administrations new Vard? VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) centre, is to facilitate the comparison of ships and to support a risk based decision on which ships to focus attention on. For a VTS operator, tasked with monitoring hundreds of ships, this is a valuable decision support tool. The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) is a high-trophic fish species present in Arctic waters. The present study aimed to determine concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDDs/Fs), dioxin-like (DL) PCBs and six non-dioxin-like (NDL) PCBs in muscle and liver from 10 female Greenland sharks collected between 2001 and 2003 from Icelandic waters. The mean total concentrations of PCDDs/Fs were 13 and 530pg/g fat for muscle and liver, respectively, and show enrichment in the liver. Concentrations of DL-non-ortho PCBs were also higher in liver compared to muscle with mean concentrations of 7.8 and 0.36ng/g fat, respectively. No enrichment in the liver was found for DL-mono-ortho- and NDL-PCBs. No correlation was found between the size range studied and total concentrations of the compounds analyzed. Total WHO-TEQs (PCDDs/Fs and DL-PCBs) ranged between 7.1-70 and 54-1500pg/g fat in muscle and liver, respectively. 相似文献

This paper presents a new dynamic environmental risk model, with intended use within a new, dynamical approach for risk based ship traffic prioritisation. The philosophy behind this newly developed approach is that shipping risk can be reduced by directing efforts towards ships and areas that have been identified as high priority (high risk), prior to a potential accident. The risk model proposed in this paper separates itself from previous models by drawing on available information on dynamic factors and by focusing on the ship's surroundings. The model estimates the environmental risk of drift grounding accidents for oil tankers in real time and in forecast mode, combining the probability of grounding with oil spill impact on the coastline. Results show that the inherent dynamic risk introduced by an oil tanker sailing along the North Norwegian coast depends, not surprisingly, significantly upon wind and ocean currents, as well as tug position and cargo oil type. Results of this study indicate that the risk model is well suited for real time risk assessment, and effectively separates low risk and high risk situations. The model is well suited as a tool to prioritise oil tankers and coastal segments. This enables dynamic risk based positioning of tugs, using both real-time and projected risk, for effective support in case of a drifting ship situation. 相似文献
