At two locations in the Atlantic Ocean (DSDP Sites 367 and 530) early to middle Cretaceous organic-carbon-rich beds (“black shales”) were found to have significantly lower δ15N values (lower15N/14N ratios) than adjacent organic-carbon-poor beds (white limestones or green claystones). While these lithologies are of marine origin, the black strata in particular have °15N values that are significantly lower than those previously found in the marine sediment record and most contemporary marine nitrogen pools. In contrast, black, organic-carbon-rich beds at a third site (DSDP Site 603) contain predominantly terrestrial organic matter and have C- and N-isotopic compositions similar to organic matter of modern terrestrial origin.The recurring15N depletion in the marine-derived Cretaceous sequences prove that the nitrogen they contain is the end result of an episodic and atypical biogeochemistry. Existing isotopic and other data indicate that the low15N relative abundance is the consequence of pelagic rather than post-depositional processes. Reduced ocean circulation, increased denitrification, and, hence, reduced euphotic zone nitrate availability may have led to Cretaceous phytoplankton assemblages that were periodically dominated by N2-fixing blue-green algae, a possible source of this sediment15N-depletion. Lack of parallel isotopic shifts in Cretaceous terrestrially-derived nitrogen (Site 603) argues that the above change in nitrogen cycling during this period did not extend beyond the marine environment.  相似文献

Closure of the gap at the abutment joints of bridges has been the source of extensive damage during the 1971 San Fernando and more recent earthquakes. In this paper a model for the investigation of the effects of this gap closure is presented and analysed. The focus of the model is the representation of the non-linear response of the bridge abutments, the foundation and the columns. The ecology of the St Lucia estuary in South Africa is of unique international importance. During droughts the estuary experiences high salinities, with values above that of seawater. Ion-poor groundwater flowing into the estuary from prominent sand aquifers along its eastern shoreline forms low-salinity habitats for salt-sensitive biota. During droughts, plants and animals can take refuge in the groundwater discharge zone until the condition in the estuary regains tolerable salinity. Simulations of the groundwater discharge indicate that the flow can persist during droughts over at least a decade, and be of great important for the resilience of the estuary. Anthropogenic activities have reduced the river inflow and made the St Lucia estuary more sensitive to droughts. The groundwater has thereby become increasingly important for the estuary’s ecology. Protection of the groundwater discharge along the shoreline itself and actions to increase the groundwater recharge are therefore important management tasks.  相似文献

Recent U–Pb age determinations and PT estimates allow us to characterize the different levels of a formerly thickened crust, and provide further constraints on the make up and tectono-thermal evolution of the Grenville Province in the Manicouagan area. An important tectonic element, the Manicouagan Imbricate zone (MIZ), consists of mainly 1.65, 1.48 and 1.17 Ga igneous rocks metamorphosed under 1400–1800 MPa and 800–900 °C at 1.05–1.03 Ga, during the Ottawan episode of the Grenvillian orogenic cycle, coevally with intrusion of gabbro dykes in shear zones. The MIZ has been interpreted as representing thermally weakened deep levels of thickened crust extruded towards the NW over a parautochthonous crustal-scale ramp. Mantle-derived melts are considered as in part responsible for the high metamorphic temperatures that were registered.New data show that mid-crustal levels structurally above the MIZ are represented by the Gabriel Complex of the Berthé terrane, that consists of migmatite with boudins of 1136±15 Ma gabbro and rafts of anatectic metapelite with an inherited monazite age at 1478±30 Ma. These rocks were metamorphosed at about the same time as the MIZ (metamorphic zircon in gabbro: 1046±2 Ma; single grains of monazite in anatectic metapelite: 1053±2 Ma) and under the same T range (800–900 °C) but at lower P conditions (1000–1100 MPa). They are mainly exposed in an antiformal culmination above a high-strain zone, which has tectonic lenses of high PT rocks from the MIZ and is intruded by synmetamorphic gabbroic rocks. This zone is interpreted as part of the hangingwall of the MIZ during extrusion. A gap of 400 MPa in metamorphic pressures between the tectonic lenses and the country rocks, together with the broad similarity in metamorphic ages, are consistent with rapid tectonic transport of the high PT rocks over a ramp prior to the incorporation of the mafic lenses in the hangingwall.Between the antiformal culmination of the Gabriel Complex and the MIZ 1.48 Ga old granulites of the Hart Jaune terrane are exposed. They are intruded by unmetamorphosed 1228±3 Ma gabbro sills and 1166±1 Ma anorthosite. Hart Jaune Terrane represents relatively high crustal levels that truncate the MIZ-Gabriel Complex contact and are preserved in a synformal structure.Farther south, the Gabriel Complex is overlain by the Banded Complex, a composite unit including 1403+32/−25 Ma granodiorite and 1238+16/−13−1202+40/−25 Ma granite. This unit has been metamorphosed under relatively low-P (800 MPa) granulite-facies conditions. Metamorphic U–Pb data, limited to zircon lower intercept ages (971±38 Ma and 996±27 Ma) and a titanite (990±5 Ma) age, are interpreted to postdate the metamorphic peak.The general configuration of units along the section is consistent with extrusion of the MIZ during shortening and, finally, normal displacement along discrete shear zones.  相似文献

The circulation driven by wave breaking, tides and winds within a fringing coral reef system (Ningaloo Reef) in Western Australia was investigated using the ocean circulation model ROMS two-way coupled to the wave model SWAN. Currents within the system were dominantly forced by wave breaking, with flow driven over the shallow reefs and towards the lagoon, which returned to the ocean through channels in the reef. Hindcast model simulations were compared against an extensive field dataset, revealing that the coupled wave–circulation model could accurately predict the waves and currents throughout this morphologically complex reef–lagoon system. A detailed momentum budget analysis showed that, over the reef, a dominant cross-shore balance was established between radiation stress gradients and a pressure (mean water level) gradient (similar to a beach). Within the lagoon, alongshore currents were primarily balanced by alongshore gradients in wave setup, which drove flow towards (and ultimately out) the channels. The importance of these wave-driven currents to Ningaloo Reef was quantified over a full seasonal cycle, during periods when wave and wind conditions significantly differed. These results showed that wave breaking still overwhelmingly dominated the circulation and flushing of Ningaloo Reef throughout the year, with winds playing an insignificant role.  相似文献

We present observations and analysis of gully headcut erosion, which differ from previous headcut studies in both spatial and temporal detail. Using ten terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) surveys conducted over a period of 3 years, we mapped headcut erosion with centimeter‐scale detail on a sub‐annual basis. Erosional change is observed through point cloud differencing, which expands on previous studies of headcut retreat rate by revealing the evolution of the headcut morphology. Headcut retreat observations are combined with hydrological measurements to explore the controlling factors of erosional retreat. We find that (i) mass failure due to wetting, (ii) saturation weakening of shale bedrock in plunge pools, and (iii) direct wash over the headcut face all appear to contribute to headcut retreat; however, mass failure via wetting appears to be the dominant process. Soil moisture was monitored near the study headcut at 0.4 m depth, and time‐lapse photos show that soil wetting tends to be concentrated along the headcut apex after rainfall and snowmelt runoff events. We find that moisture concentration at the headcut apex leads to more rapid erosion at that location than along the headcut sidewalls, resulting in a semi‐ellipsoidal plan view morphology that is maintained as the headcut migrates up‐valley. Global sensitivity analysis techniques are better suited for analyzing input-output relationships over the full range of parameter variations and model outcomes, as opposed to local sensitivity analysis carried out around a reference point. This article describes three such techniques: (1) stepwise rank regression analysis for building input-output models to identify key contributors to output variance, (2) mutual information (entropy) analysis for determining the strength of nonmonotonic patterns of input-output association, and (3) classification tree analysis for determining what variables or combinations are responsible for driving model output into extreme categories. These techniques are best applied in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation-based probabilistic analyses. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the applicability of these methods. The usefulness of global sensitivity techniques is examined vis-a-vis local sensitivity analysis methods, and recommendations are provided for their applications in ground water modeling practice.  相似文献

Hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon components dissolving in water from fresh diesel and field samples of highly weathered diesel (spilled up to 50 years ago) from two sites were investigated. The fresh and weathered diesels were equilibrated with water using a slow-stirring method, and the product and equilibrated aqueous water samples analyzed by a range of analytical procedures. The water phase equilibrated with weathered diesels had higher total dissolved organics concentrations (96 and 8.6 mg/L at the two sites) compared to the water phase equilibrated with fresh diesel (average of 3.4 mg/L). Compound class characterization of dissolved organics in water from the weathered diesel showed that polar components were a significant compound class (98% and 42% at the two sites) and appeared largely as an unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in the total ion chromatograms (TICs). Identification of 1-adamantanol in the polar fraction of both weathered diesel samples (3.6 and 0.3 μg/L at the two sites) suggested that at least some of the associated polar components are from a petroleum source. The analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) is aimed at measuring only dissolved carbon and hydrogen-containing compounds, and dissolved polar compounds present as a UCM are often assumed to be from natural organic matter (NOM) and removed. This may result in a gross underestimation of the total soluble organic material in water associated with weathered diesels. In addition, the risk posed by these fuel-derived polar compounds is unknown.  相似文献

The major uncertainty in relating cosmogenic-nuclide exposure ages to ages measured by other dating methods comes from extrapolating nuclide production rates measured at globally scattered calibration sites to the sites of unknown age that are to be dated. This uncertainty can be reduced by locating production rate calibration sites that are similar in location and age to the sites to be dated. We use this strategy to reconcile exposure age and radiocarbon deglaciation chronologies for northeastern North America by compiling 10Be production rate calibration measurements from independently dated late-glacial and early Holocene ice-marginal landforms in this region. 10Be production rates measured at these sites are 6–12% lower than predicted by the commonly accepted global 10Be calibration data set used with any published production rate scaling scheme. In addition, the regional calibration data set shows significantly less internal scatter than the global calibration data set. Thus, this calibration data set can be used to improve both the precision and accuracy of exposure dating of regional late-glacial events. For example, if the global calibration data set is used to calculate exposure ages, the exposure-age deglaciation chronology for central New England is inconsistent with the deglaciation chronology inferred from radiocarbon dating and varve stratigraphy. We show that using the regional data set instead makes the exposure age and radiocarbon chronologies consistent. This increases confidence in correlating exposure ages of ice-marginal landforms in northeastern North America with glacial and climate events dated by other means.  相似文献
