Within the greater Ar Rub' al Khali (Empty Quarter) sand sea lies an internal depocentre, the Al Liwa Basin, which comprises a variety of mega‐scale dune types. Crescentic dunes dominant the north of the basin while megadunes of stellate or star form are a major landform of the south‐eastern reaches. Their development into dune fields is determined by the style and rate of dune–dune interactions, the boundary conditions imposed by a multi‐modal wind regime, fluctuating groundwater levels, and sediment availability under an assortment of climatic conditions throughout the Quaternary. As a result, dune field patterns are a collective response to these perturbations in space, time and environment. The R‐statistic is a collective measure of these responses, and is a metric capable of identifying the degree of pattern maturity or self‐organization of the aeolian system, and the pathways from which patterns evolve. The spatial signature of the southerly located star dunes is characterized by two definitive patterns of organization: the first, one of complete spatial randomness, the second, a low degree of spatial uniformity. In isolation, these results appear to be unrelated to those for crescentic dunes of the region in which a significantly higher degree of pattern dispersion is the norm. However, when spatial statistical measures are integrated with the theoretical understanding of dune–dune interactions and the involvement of environmental agents, the complex morphodynamic pathways and linkages between regional dune fields is better understood. In this case, both constructive (e.g. merging, lateral linking) and regenerative activity (e.g. calving) have played important roles in the development of dune size, and associated adjustments in spacing, and dune numbers, and subsequently dune field patterns. Synergetic patterns are emblematic of this vast dunescape, whereby transitional geographic, morphologic, dimensional and environmental modifications exist between the mega‐crescentic and mega‐stellate dunes of the Empty Quarter. Abstract SPOT multispectral and panchromatic data were evaluated to determine their utility to detect debris‐load characteristics of the Batura Glacier located in the Karakoram Himalaya. Debris‐depth measurements, surface samples, and ground photography were obtained and used with satellite‐derived information to produce supraglacial debris‐load and discharge estimates. Visual analysis of panchromatic data indicated that structural characteristics of the glacier exhibited unique textures associated with surface structure characteristics. Multispectral analysis revealed that stratified unsupervised classification of principal components can be used to produce classifications depicting supraglacial lithology and shallow debris‐load variability. Debris‐load discharge estimates ranged from 48–97 x 103 m3 yr1. These results indicate that SPOT multispectral data may be used to produce reasonable quantitative estimates of debris‐load characteristics for glacier mass balance and regional denudation studies. 相似文献

Discharge of the Shatt Al-Arab is believed to be a dominating component of the northern Arabian Gulf’s ecology and largely
responsible for productivity of Kuwait’s fisheries. With major construction of dams on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in
Turkey, river discharge has been substantially reduced, and flooding essentially eliminated. We attempted to relate river
flow and shrimp landings indirectly by correlating 19 years of salinity and temperature data from Kuwait’s waters with corresponding
annual shrimp landings. For green tiger prawns (Penaeus semisulcatus), the combination of October salinities and January temperatures provided the best correlation (r = 0.67) with landings in the following shrimping season. For the combined landings of jinga and kiddi shrimps (Metapenaeus affinis and Parapenaeopsis stylifera, respectively), December salinity during season and May temperature prior to season resulted in the best correlation (r = 0.87). Landings of these two species also correlated well with spring and summer temperatures. Under normal conditions,
late winter or early spring temperatures prior to fishing season influence recruitment of the green tiger prawn, whereas December
salinities during harvest season influence the abundance of jinga–kiddi shrimps. With further reductions in the Shatt Al-Arab
discharge and the elimination of flood events, Kuwait’s shrimp landings will most likely decrease over time. 相似文献

Instrumental climate records from the central Canadian treeline zone display a pattern of variation similar to general Northern
Hemisphere temperature trends. To examine whether this general correspondence extends back beyond the instrumental record,
we obtained a sediment core from Lake S41, a small lake in the Northwest Territories of Canada at 63°43.11′ N, 109°19.07′ W.
A radiocarbon-based chronology was developed for the core. The sediments were analyzed for organic-matter content by loss-on-ignition
(LOI), biogenic-silica content (BSi), and chironomid community composition to reconstruct July air temperature and summer
water temperature. The paleolimnological records were compared with records of atmospheric CO2 concentration, solar variability, and hemispheric temperature variations over the past 2000 years. The results of the analyses
suggest that widely-documented long-term variations in Northern Hemisphere temperature associated with radiative forcing,
namely the cooling following the medieval period during the Little Ice Age (LIA), and twentieth century warming, are represented
in the central Canadian treeline zone. There is also evidence of a brief episode of warming during the eighteenth century.
As evidenced by LOI and BSi, the twentieth century warming is typified by increased lake productivity relative to the LIA.
Depending upon the measure, the increased productivity of the twentieth century nearly equals or exceeds that of any other
period in the past 2000 years. In contrast, the rate of chironomid head capsule accumulation decreased and remained low during
the twentieth century. Although the chironomid-inferred temperature reconstructions indicate cooling during the LIA, they
present no evidence of greatly increased temperatures during the twentieth century. Warming during the twentieth century might
have enhanced lake stratification, and the response of the chironomid fauna to warming was attenuated by decreased oxygen
and lower temperatures in the hypolimnion of the more stratification-prone lake.

Public works in progress in the Campanian plain north of Somma-Vesuvius recently encountered the remains of a prehistoric settlement close to the town of Afragola. Rescue excavations brought to light a Bronze Age village partially destroyed and buried by pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) of the Vesuvian Pomici di Avellino eruption (3.8 14C ka BP) and subsequently sealed by alluvial deposits. Volcanological and rock-magnetic investigations supplemented the excavations.Careful comparison between volcanological and archaeological stratigraphies led to an understanding of the timing of the damage the buildings suffered when they were struck by a series of PDCs. The first engulfed the village, located some 14 km to the north of the inferred vent, and penetrated into the dwellings without causing major damage. The buildings were able to withstand the weak dynamic pressure of the currents and deviate their path, as shown by the magnetic fabric analyses. Some later collapsed under the load of the deposits piled up by successive currents. Stepwise demagnetization of the thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) carried by potsherds embedded in the deposits yields deposition temperatures in the order of 260–320 °C, fully consistent with those derived from pottery and lithic fragments from other distal and proximal sites. The fairly uniform temperature of the deposits is here ascribed to the lack of pervasive air entrainment into the currents. This, in turn, resulted from the lack of major topographical obstacles along the flat plain.The coupling of structural damage and sedimentological analyses indicates that the currents were not destructive in the Afragola area, but TRM data indicate they were still hot enough to cause death or severe injury to humans and animals. The successful escape of the entire population is apparent from the lack of human remains and from thousands of human footprints on the surface of the deposits left by the first PDCs. People were thus able to walk barefoot across the already emplaced deposits and escape the subsequent PDCs. The rapid cooling of the deposits was probably due to both their thinness and heat dissipation due to condensation of water vapour released in the mixture by magma–water interaction. 相似文献

Although paleoclimatic research in the Arctic has most often focused on variations in temperature, the Arctic has also experienced changes in hydrologic balance. Changes in Arctic precipitation and evaporation rates affects soils, permafrost, lakes, wetlands, rivers, ice and vegetation. Changes in Arctic soils, permafrost, runoff, and vegetation can influence global climate by changing atmospheric methane and carbon dioxide concentrations, thermohaline circulation, and high latitude albedo. Documenting past variations in Arctic hydrological conditions is important for understanding Arctic climate and the potential response and role of the Arctic in regards to future climate change. Methods for reconstructing past changes in Arctic hydrology from the stratigraphic, isotopic, geochemical and fossil records of lake sediments are being developed, refined and applied in a number of regions. These records suggest that hydrological variations in the Arctic have been regionally asynchronous, reflecting the impacts of different forcing factors including orbitally controlled insolation changes, changes in geography related to coastal emergence, ocean currents, sea ice extent, and atmospheric circulation. Despite considerable progress, much work remains to be done on the development of paleohydrological proxies and their application to the Arctic. 相似文献

Ambiguity in parameter identification represents a potentially serious limitation to the application of models of surface water acidification. Previous work has concentrated on manipulation of two of the three factors affecting model identifiability, namely model structure and estimator properties. A new technique is proposed which uses different modes of response within the data to improve parameter identification. Preliminary results, obtained using the Birkenes model of surface water acidification, appear to show promise. The technique is robust in recovering model parameters from synthetic data, with and without error, and in assimilating problems of structural error. 相似文献
