A study is reported of air pollution episodes in the Broye valley, a rural area of Switzerland located to the north-east of the city of Lausanne, in which a number of industrial sources of SO2 are located. The study comprises numerical simulations of regional-scale meteorology, local plume behavior, as well as a wind tunnel investigation of the same region in order to ascertain the relative advantages and disadvantages of numerical and physical modeling.
In situ data are available for certain episodes which occured during a very cold period in the winter of 1985, allowing intercomparisons to be made between nature and models. Furthermore, a significant effort undertaken by cantonal authorities has led to the setting up of a detailed emission inventory, which includes industry, individual domestic heating and traffic. Ellenbergerite occurs as purple millimetre-size grains associated with talc, kyanite, clinochlore, rutile, and zircon in composite inclusions within decimetre-large pyrope crystals (90–98 mole percent end-member) in the quartzite layer of the Dora Maira massif, Western Alps, from which coesite has been recently reported (Chopin 1984). It is hexagonal, a=12.255(8), c=4.932(4) Å, Z=1, space group P63. Mohs hardness 6.5; Dmes 3.15, Dcal 3.10; no cleavage. Uniaxial negative and vividly pleochroic, colourless, colourless to deep lilac with colour zoning. The intensely coloured variety has 1.6789(5), 1.670(1); microprobe analysis yields SiO2 39.1, P2O5 0.45, Al2O3 25.1, TiO2 4.0, MgO 22.2, FeO 0.20, sum 99.05 wt.% including H2O 8.0 (coulometrically). The formula calculated on a O28(OH)10 basis (implying 7.5 wt.% H2O) is Mg6.71 Fe0.03 Ti0.61 Al6.00 Si7.92 P0.08 O28(OH)10 The colour zoning is due to nearly complete TiZr substitution. In addition ellenbergerite may contain more than 8 wt.% P2O5 with strictly correlated changes of Si, Mg, Al and Ti+Zr contents, over 80% of which represent the SiAlPMg substitution.The structure has been determined from 1049 observed independent reflections and refined to R=0.034, Rw=0.031, including six of ten protons. It consists of single chains of face-sharing octahedra with one third vacancies extending along the six-fold screw axes, and of pairs of fully occupied face-sharing octahedra linked by edge-sharing to form octahedral double chains parallel to the twofold screw axes, all interconnected by SiO4 tetrahedra. It may be compared with the dumortierite polymorph with space group P63mc derived hypothetically by Moore and Araki (1978). The structural formula is (Mg,Ti,Zr,)2 Mg6(Al,Mg)6 (Si,P)2 Si6 O28(OH)10 Face-sharing octahedra are an unusual feature in silicates which results in a dense structure and reflects, considering the common bulk composition, the uncommon high-pressure formation conditions (about 25–30 kbar, 700–800° C). Ti4+-Fe2+ charge transfer between face-sharing octahedra on the six-fold screw axes most likely accounts for the absorption scheme. 相似文献

An experimental study of the system Zr-Fe-Ti-O in equilibrium with metallic iron has been conducted at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range 950–1300° C, with the purpose of modelling sub-solidus relations between Zr-bearing Fe-Ti oxide phases in lunar rocks. The phase relations are governed by the coexistence of the Fe-Ti oxides with ZrO2 at temperatures below 1247° C, but with the new cubic ZFT phase at higher temperatures. ZFT, approximately Zr Fe Ti O5, is probably related to the so-called stabilized cubic zirconia and could represent a synthetic equivalent of some lunar Zr-Fe-Ti rich oxide minerals.The zirconium contents in all Fe-, Ti and Fe-Ti-oxide phases increase with increasing temperature. At each temperature, Zr is incorporated preferentially in the Ti-oxide (up to 11 wt% ZrO2), followed by ferropseudobrookite (up to 6 wt% ZrO2), ilmenite (max. 4 wt%) and wüstite (max. 2.5 wt%). Ulvöspinel coexisting with ilmenite (+Fe0+ ZrO2 and/or ZFT) always contains less than 1.2 wt% ZrO2, whereas the same mineral in assemblage with wüstite-ZrO2-Fe0 displays even higher ZrO2 contents than ilmenite (above 4 wt%). Considering that the values determined here in the synthetic parageneses represent saturation concentrations at high temperatures in a simple model system, the ZrO2 concentrations in the corresponding lunar minerals should generally be significantly lower. This is realized, except for the so-called Cr-Zr-Ca armalcolites which display ZrO2 contents in the range 3.5–7 wt% and are thus probably related rather to Zr-rich oxide minerals than to armalcolite itself. 相似文献

The Tenryu Canyon deep-sea fan biological community is characterized by both reduced and oxidized sediments in the immediate vicinity of the pore water vents. The upper sediments in contact with the clams are reduced, the organic matter is enriched in sulfur, and inorganic sulfides (Fe, Cu, Zn) are forming. Towards the outer fringes of the communities the sediment is oxidized and metals generally associated with ferro-manganese oxides are concentrated. Several metals, Cd, Pb, Mo show distributions which are strongly influenced by the metabolism of the clam colony. Comparison of water and sediment geochemistry leads to the conclusion that there should be a downward flux of oxygenated seawater on the boundaries of the colony and an upward flux of chemically more reduced deep pore water at the location of the colony. Trace metals anomalies as well asδ15N anomalies of organic matter may be useful to prospect for extinct venting areas in ancient subduction zones. 相似文献

The influence of pedogenetic factors onto spatial variability of chromium in soil surface horizon was studied in a metamorphic area (Massif Central, France) at the hillside scale. A grid survey was performed. Surface soil horizons were sampled at each point and analysed in Cr. Results show the determinant influence of the rock type on Cr content distribution along the slope. However, surface horizons of these soils exhibit a lower Cr content heterogeneity than the deeper horizons. This was explained by soils' material erosion and deposition along the slope. Many water quality models use some form of the curve number (CN) equation developed by the Soil Conservation Service (SCS; U.S. Depart of Agriculture) to predict storm runoff from watersheds based on an infiltration-excess response to rainfall. However, in humid, well-vegetated areas with shallow soils, such as in the northeastern USA, the predominant runoff generating mechanism is saturation-excess on variable source areas (VSAs). We reconceptualized the SCS–CN equation for VSAs, and incorporated it into the General Watershed Loading Function (GWLF) model. The new version of GWLF, named the Variable Source Loading Function (VSLF) model, simulates the watershed runoff response to rainfall using the standard SCS–CN equation, but spatially distributes the runoff response according to a soil wetness index. We spatially validated VSLF runoff predictions and compared VSLF to GWLF for a subwatershed of the New York City Water Supply System. The spatial distribution of runoff from VSLF is more physically realistic than the estimates from GWLF. This has important consequences for water quality modeling, and for the use of models to evaluate and guide watershed management, because correctly predicting the coincidence of runoff generation and pollutant sources is critical to simulating non-point source (NPS) pollution transported by runoff.
