This study assesses through a multiple before-after-control-impact (MBACI) design the effects of diesel oil on the structure of nematode assemblages in unvegetated tidal flats of a subtropical estuary. Oil-exposed treatments were contrasted with controls for a duration of four successive days before and after an experimental spill in three distinct areas of the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex (Southern Brazil). No significant differences were observed in nematode total density, number of taxa and the overall assemblage structure between the control and impact treatments from before to after the experimental spill. This reinforces the idea that, despite being good indicators of environmental stress, free-living marine nematodes are able to tolerate low concentrations of hydrocarbons and to survive in moderately contaminated areas. We also show that robust experimental designs are useful to avoid confounding expected natural variability with the effects of a mild impact.  相似文献

Summary  Seven series of monthly pluviometric amounts, sometimes exceeding recording periods of 100 years and compiled by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorología (Spain), are used to study the irregularity of the pluviometric regime along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and nearby Atlantic coast. First of all, three statistical functions (gamma, log-normal and a combination of Poisson and gamma distributions) and moment-ratio diagrams are used to model the monthly and annual empirical distributions of precipitation amounts, each distribution being tested by means of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. It is noteworthy that, whereas most of the monthly cases require the gamma distribution, the pluviometric behaviour of the summer months is well described by the Poisson-gamma distribution. Moreover, both the log-normal and the gamma distributions satisfactorily model empirical annual amounts. Consequently, rainfall amounts are not identically distributed along a year for each gauge tested. Second, temporal trends deduced for annual and seasonal amounts are computed and their statistical significance evaluated. The most notable fact is that, although some linear trends are close to 1 mm/year, their significance levels exceed the assumed threshold value and, excepting the winter season for Barcelona, they are considered non-significant from a statistical point of view. Finally, by again using monthly and annual amounts, three temporal irregularity indexes are computed for each pluviometric series, the temporal disparity of the rainfall patterns of the Mediterranean region being enhanced as a result. It addition to the temporal irregularity, a change with latitude is observed both in the parameters of the statistical distributions and the temporal irregularity indexes for the rain gauges analysed. The two most southerly rain gauges constitute a special case in comparison with the remaining stations, because they also receive the Atlantic influences due to their proximity to this ocean. This paper deals with the geometry and kinematics of the active normal faults in northern Umbria, and their relationship with the seismicity observed in the area. In particular, we illustrate the contribution of seismic reflection data (a network of seismic profiles, NNW–SSE and WSW–ENE trending) in constraining at depth the geometry of the different active fault systems and their reciprocal spatial relationships. The main normal fault in the area is the Alto Tiberina fault, NNW trending and ENE dipping, producing a displacement of about 5 km, and generating a continental basin (Val Tiberina basin), infilled by up to 1500 m with Upper Pliocene–Quaternary deposits. The fault has a staircase trajectory, and can be traced on the seismic profiles to a depth of about 13 km. A set of WSW-dipping, antithetic faults can be recognised on the profiles, the most important of which is the Gubbio fault, bordering an extensional Quaternary basin and interpreted as an active fault based on geological, geomorphologic and seismological evidence. The epicentral distribution of the main historical earthquakes is strictly parallel to the general trend of the normal faults. The focal mechanisms of the major earthquakes show a strong similarity with the attitude of the extensional faults, mapped at the surface and recognised on the seismic profiles. These observations demonstrate the connection between seismicity in the area and the activity of the normal faults. Moreover, the distribution of the instrumental seismicity suggests the activity of the Alto Tiberina fault as the basal detachment for the extensional tectonics of the area. Finally, the action of the Alto Tiberina fault was simulated using two dimensional finite element modelling: a close correspondence between the concentration of shear stresses in the model and the distribution of the present earthquakes was obtained.  相似文献

This work describes the development of the Angolan earthquake catalog and seismicity distribution in the Southwestern African Plate, in Angola. This region is one of the least seismically active, even for stable continental regions (SCRs) in the world. The maximum known earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0 Ms, while events with magnitudes of 4.5 have return period of about 10 years. Events with magnitude 5 and above occur with return period of about 20 years. Five seismic zones can be confirmed in Angola, within and along craton edges and in the sedimentary basins including offshore. Overall, the exposed cratonic regions tend to have more earthquakes compared to other regions such as sedimentary basins. Earthquakes tend to occur in Archaic rocks, especially inside preexisting weakness zones and in tectonic-magmatic reactivation zones of Mesozoic and Meso-Cenozoic, associated with the installation of a wide variety of intrusive rocks, strongly marked by intense tectonism. This fact can be explained by the models of preexisting weakness zones and stress concentration near intersecting structures. The Angolan passive margin is also a new region where seismic activity occurs. Although clear differences are found between different areas along the passive margin, in the middle near Porto Amboim city, seismic activity is more frequent compared with northwestern and southwestern regions.  相似文献

We discuss an electromagnetic sampling calorimeter for the detection of very high energy gamma-rays on the Moon, which is based on the use of scintillating cylinders and plates imbedded in the lunar soil. The use of lunar soil as a calorimeter radiator reduces the weight of the material to be transported to the Moon and minimises environmental impact. Plastic scintillator bars inserted into the regolith about 1.5 m are the active elements of this instrument: at the surface, each bar is terminated by a plastic scintillator plate to veto high energy charge particles. The readout system for the scintillator bars and plates are based on recently developed single photon solid state detectors (Silicon Photomultiplier, SiPM), extremely compact, sturdy and sensitive devices suited for detecting small light pulses in a space experiment. The performance of a regolith-scintillator calorimeter is evaluated and the relevant parameters are optimised using a GEANT4 simulation.  相似文献

Bonini (2009, Structural controls on a carbon dioxide-driven mud volcano field in the Northern Apennines (Pieve Santo Stefano, Italy): relations with pre-existing steep discontinuities and seismicity. Journal of Structural Geology 31, 44–54) presents a 2D mechanical analysis to infer the failure conditions responsible for the seismicity distribution during an Mw = 4.6 seismic sequence nucleating during 2001 in the Northern Apennines. In my view the mechanical analysis presented in this paper has some weakness or is not well constrained, in particular: 1) the assumption of a dip angle of 50°, is not consistent with the activated structures; 2) the Pf = σ3 condition, difficult to be attained along a cohesionless fault dipping at 50°; 3) the isotropic stress state, i.e. σ2 = σ3, that is not consistent with the active or recent stress field in the area.  相似文献

Extreme normalised residuals, defined as departures from the average values, of 65 daily maximum, T max, and minimum, T min, temperature series recorded in Catalonia (NE Spain) during 1950–2004 are analysed. Similarly to the sampling strategies applied to long dry spells, the partial duration series (PDS) offer some advantages in comparison with the annual extreme series. Instead of using a common percentile threshold for all temperature series, PDS are chosen according to the mean excess plot procedure. Series of extreme residuals are modelled, in terms of the L-moments formulation, by the generalised Pareto distribution. Extreme residuals of T max and T min are estimated for return periods ranging from 2 to 50 years and their spatial distribution is represented for selected return periods of 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 years. Two daily extreme temperatures events, a hot episode (in August) and a cold episode (in February), are simulated taking into account the average T max (T min) for a day in August (February), their standard deviations and the extremes for a 50-year return period. Both simulations are compared with outstanding real episodes recorded on August 13th 2003 and February 11th 1956. Additionally, a spatial regionalisation of Catalonia in several clusters, in terms of the extreme residuals for return periods from 2 to 50 years, is done. A principal component analysis is applied to the extreme residual curves characterising every temperature series and, using as variables the principal components, the regionalisation is obtained by applying the average linkage clustering algorithm. Finally, each cluster is characterised by its average extreme residual curve for return periods ranging from 2 to 50 years at 1-year interval.  相似文献

The determination of a local lithospheric stress pattern from low magnitude seismic activity recorded at a loca array is attempted by means of numerical simulations that include waveform inversion and annealing inversion techniques. A set of flat stratified layers are assumed for the propagating medium. The tests show that the annealing algorithm is a useful tool in this kind of study where collected seismic activity at local arrays could help us better understand local stress distributions in the lithosphere. Although real data recorded at local seismic arrays should be processed, assuming more realistic crust and upper mantle models, many characteristics of the annealing process described here could be used when studying real problems.  相似文献
