In spite of continued mass urban protests in post-apartheid South Africa, few are the social movements or individuals which openly disengage from the dominant and former liberation party, the African National Congress. Many authors have analysed this paradox as a two-pronged strategy, ‘the brick’ and ‘the ballot’, to try and influence public policy. However, these two political positions become increasingly contradictory and difficult to hold together, as the ANC becomes more and more intolerant towards social movements. This paper, using the example of women’s contention about water commodification in Phiri (Soweto), examines how activists shape their opposition whilst still stating their affiliation to the ruling party. They manage these contradicting political loyalties through a variety of tactics exonerating the ANC from the blame of urban mismanagement: contrasting the current ANC with the ‘real’ ANC of the past – to which they remain faithful; and blaming the ‘deployees’ of the ANC at the local level for betraying the ‘real’ ANC at the national level. These tactics however may be short-lived as social movements upscale their action to the national level.  相似文献

The diversity of bacterial communities exposed to radioactive contamination in Chernobyl soils was examined by a combination of molecular and culture-based approaches. A set of six radioactive soil samples, exhibiting high levels of 137Cs contamination, were collected from the T22 trench. Three samples were also collected in nearby soils with low contamination. Complex bacterial community structures were observed in both highly and weakly contaminated samples, using a molecular approach targeting the 16S rRNA gene. However, the presence of specific populations within samples from highly contaminated soils could not be revealed by statistical analysis of the DGGE profiles. More than 200 culturable isolates, representative of dominant morphotypes, were grouped into 83 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) and affiliated to Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma-Proteobacteria and Bacteroïdetes. No specific pattern linked to contamination was observed for these culturable bacteria. The results show that both highly and weakly contaminated soils host a wide diversity of bacteria, suggesting that long term exposure to radionuclides does not lead to the extinction of bacterial diversity.  相似文献

Thermodynamic data for several clays, zeolites, and MgSO4 salts were combined with calculated yearly mean temperatures and water-vapor pressures on the martian surface to predict mineral hydration states from low to middle latitudes. These predictions were used to evaluate whether the necessary amount and distribution of hydrous minerals were compatible with the Mars Odyssey observations of water-equivalent hydrogen (WEH). Our results indicate that zeolites like chabazite or clay minerals like Ca-montmorillonite would have to be unrealistically abundant in the martian soil (as much as 55 wt%) while Mg-sulfate hydrates at concentrations between 2 and 11 wt% could account for the WEH. However, the geographic distribution of WEH is incompatible with a uniformly distributed mineralogy in equilibrium with the annual mean P-T environment. A heterogeneous distribution of a mixture of different hydrous minerals, reflecting a heterogeneous Mars surface geology, may better explain a significant portion of the observed near-equatorial WEH.  相似文献

An annually laminated stalagmite from Southeastern Ethiopia grew for 443±8 yr starting at 5023 yr BP (±160 yr) as determined by lamina‐tuned U‐Th dating. The speleothem shows three growth phases: (1) an initial phase where the stalagmite has a candlestick shape, deposited by relatively slow rate drip water; (2) a middle growth phase where laminae grow on the flanks, suggesting faster drip rates; and (3) a final growth phase where the speleothem becomes narrower owing to a decrease in drip water supply towards the end of deposition. Morphometry, annual growth rate, fluorescence index, and 234U/238U isotope ratio show marked differences between the growth phases, while δ13C and δ18O do not show significant variation, except within the third phase towards the top of the stalagmite, where they have higher values. The study indicates that the multiproxy approach is crucial as the different proxies respond to single climate forcing in different manners. Our results can be widely applied to speleothem studies distinguishing the relative importance of the various proxies in recording cave ‘external’ (climate, hydrology) and cave ‘internal’ (e.g. evaporation) processes. Sediments spanning the Olduvai subchron (1.79–1.95 Ma) of ODP Hole 709C in the tropical Indian Ocean were sampled at 5-cm intervals. High-resolution quantitative radiolarian and CaCO3% data have been used as proxies in interpreting palaeoceanographical conditions, an a comparison made with previously obtained oxygen isotope data. Radiolarian data were subjected to principal components analysis, resulting in four varimax factors. Factor 1 accounted for the greatest variation and comprised well-know warm-water and cold-water taxa, with high +ve and - ve scores respectively, which were used in the construction of a temperature index. Results indicate a tripartite temporal division of Olduvai palaeoceanography. In the early Olduvai, prior to 1.895 Ma, and the late Olduvai, approximating the Plio-Pleistocene boundary at 1.81 Ma, divergence-driven equatorial upwelling and high-productivity coincide with isotope-defined ‘interglacials’, and with generally low CaCO3%. However, during the mid-Olduvai, upwelling, productivity and sedimentation rates were all reduced. These changes in palaeoceanography are thought to be linked directly to eccentricity modulated variations in the precession of the Earth's orbit. The early and late Olduvai coincide with periods of minimum eccentricity, when precessional reinforcemnet of the southwest monsoon is weakest, coastal upwelling along the Oman margin is reduced, and zonal wind-driven equatorial divergence upwelling is increased. The mid-Olduvai, however, corresponds with an eccentricity maximum, during which monsoonal activity is stronger and equatorial divergence upwelling weak.  相似文献

An Irish commercial fishery for orange roughy began in the Northeast Atlantic in 2001 with the assistance of government grants. The fishery began as an open access, non-quota fishery. The rapid boom and bust of many deep water fisheries was experienced. Landings peaked in 2002 and then dropped significantly the following year. Many vessels were forced out of the fishery due to high costs and rapidly declining stocks. By 2005 the fishery was largely closed. Applying a bioeconomic analysis, this paper shows why the fishery no longer exists and discusses both the external and opportunity costs of the fishery. A bioeconomic model is applied to the available data to assess the open access effort and harvest with and without government grant aid. The results suggest that in the absence of subsidies, deep water trawling would not have been viable. In addition to the financial costs such as high fuel consumption, there are also externalities associated with deep water trawling. Orange roughy is closely associated with deep water ecosystems such as seamounts and cold water corals. This paper examines the costs of damage to cold water corals. These costs include the loss of fish habitats and lost future use and preservation values.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to assess if Lake Apopka (FL, USA) was autotrophic or heterotrophic based on the partial pressure of dissolved carbon dioxide (pCO2) in the surface water and to evaluate factors that influence the long-term changes in pCO2. Monthly average pH, alkalinity and other limnological variables collected between 1987 and 2006 were used to estimate dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), pCO2 and CO2 flux between surface water and atmosphere. Results indicated that average pCO2 in the surface water was 196 μatm, well below the atmospheric pCO2. Direct measurements of DIC concentration on three sampling dates in 2009 also supported pCO2 undersaturation in Lake Apopka. Supersaturation in CO2 occurred in this lake in only 13% of the samples from the 20-year record. The surface-water pCO2 was inversely related to Chl a concentrations. Average annual CO2 flux was 28.2 g C m−2 year−1 from the atmosphere to the lake water and correlated significantly with Chl a concentration, indicating that biological carbon sequestration led to the low dissolved CO2 concentration. Low pCO2 and high invasion rates of atmospheric CO2 in Lake Apopka indicated persistent autotrophy. High rates of nutrient loading and primary production, a high buffering capacity, a lack of allochthonous loading of organic matter, and the dominance of a planktivorous–benthivorous fish food web have supported long-term net autotrophy in this shallow subtropical eutrophic lake. Our results also showed that lake restoration by the means of nutrient reduction resulted in significantly lower total phosphorus (TP) and Chl a concentrations, and higher pCO2.  相似文献
