Slope failure is very common phenomenon in hilly regions, especially in young techno active mountainous like Himalayas. It
is hazardous because of the accompanying progressive movement of the slope-forming material. In order to minimize the landslide
effects, slope failure analysis and stabilization requires in depth understanding of the process that governs the behavior
of the slope. The present article mainly deals with the analysis of the stability of road cut slopes of Rudraprayag Area,
Uttarakhand, India. The area experiences local as well as regional slides every year. Extensive field study was carried out
along the road cut slopes. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the various Physio-mechanical properties of
rock mass. These properties have been used as input parameters for the numerical simulation of slope using FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian
Analysis of Continua) including geological discontinuities. The computed deformations and the stress distribution along the
failure surface are compared with the field observations. The study indicates that the overall slope is unstable except at
the location E where slope is critically stable. The effects of instability have been thoroughly considered and remedial measures

Thick lignite deposits on the western margin of India were preserved on account of thick vegetation which got buried underneath due to tectonic activities that occurred in northwestern part of India during the early Palaeogene. Study of the fossil flora preserved in these beds is important to deduce the palaeoclimate of the region. Therefore, a field work was undertaken to collect plant fossils from the Tarkeshwar lignite mine, Surat district, Gujarat (western India) which is still unexplored as far as the plant mega-remains are concerned. A fossil wood is systematically described from the Cambay Shale Formation of the mine considered to be of early Eocene in age. It shows close affinities with Holigarna (Anacardiaceae), particularly with H. beddomei and H. grahamii. This genus is evergreen in nature and grows in the Indo-Malayan region, while both the modern analogues of the fossil are endemic to semi-evergreen to evergreen forests ofWestern Ghats, south India, located at the equator. This not only confirms the palaeolatitudinal position of the Indian subcontinent at the equator during the early Palaeogene, but also indicates the presence of equatorial rain forest in the Indian subcontinent during the period. Based on the timetree, Sapindales started to diverge in the early Palaeocene (62–57 Ma) as its oldest fossil is from the K-Pg boundary. Discovery of the present anacardiaceous fossil (belonging to Sapindales) from the early Eocene strengthens the above phylogenetic view. 相似文献

Himalayan fold belt has full of geological surprises, ‘mélange’ is one of them which create difficulties during tunneling. Such mélange completely went unnoticed during surface mapping and geotechnical investigation preceding the construction of the Udhampur railway tunnel (URT). During the construction, the mélange zone has encountered across the tunnel, which occurs along the Tanhal thrust (equivalent to MBT) that separates the Murree Group and the Shiwalik Group. The mélange was characterized by a chaotic, heterogeneous geological mixture of stronger blocks (scale independence) and weaker sheared fine-grained matrix, often termed as “block-in-matrix rocks” or bimrocks, which enforced mixed face tunneling. The heterogeneity in a tectonic mélange led to stress concentrations in the rock blocks, and there were relatively high deformations within the matrix also. Release of stress from the blocks due to excavation, with unfavorable joint and thrust orientations enforced brittle failure of the blocks (face and crown collapses) while matrix deformation (time dependent) caused convergence of primary support later. Additionally, the clay minerals with high swelling potential within the matrix swelled and created pressure on the primary support. Due to the geomechanical heterogeneity in mélange, homogenizing the rock-mass by the commonly used quantitative systems might have lead to an inappropriate design and construction. The adopted New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) proved to be an useful tool for tunneling. 相似文献

The characteristics of long period Pc5 pulsations (frequency 3·33-1·67 mHz; period 300–600 sec) for stations in the subauroral, auroral and polar zones are studied for 1967. These pulsations occur mainly in the auroral and polar zones with one morning and one evening peak; in the cusp region they occur most frequently near local noon. The evening peak gets stronger and appears farther away from noon with increasing geomagnetic activity. Periods are shorter and amplitudes larger in the morning compared to the evening hours. Only in a small latitudinal belt (60–70°) do the periods tend to increase with latitude. Amplitudes are almost always maximum near the central line of the auroral zone and drop much more sharply towards lower latitudes than towards higher latitudes. Considerable diurnal variations and also variations with magnetic activity are found to exist in the occurrence-latitude and amplitudelatitude profiles. In all the three regions the occurrence and the amplitude of these pulsations increase with magnetic activity to a certain level after which results become uncertain. Scanning Sky Monitor (SSM) onboard AstroSat is an Xray sky monitor in the soft X-ray band designed with a large field of view to detect and locate transient X-ray sources and alert the astronomical community about interesting phenomena in the X-ray sky. SSM comprises position sensitive proportional counters with 1D coded mask for imaging. There are three detector units mounted on a platform capable of rotation which helps covering about 50% of the sky in one full rotation. Ethylene oxide (\(c\)-C2H4O) and its isomer acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) are important organic molecules because of their potential role in the formation of amino acids. The \(c\)-C2H4O molecule is a \(b\)-type asymmetric top molecule and owing to half-spin of each of the four hydrogen atoms, it has two distinct ortho (nuclear spin one) and para (nuclear spin zero and two) species. It has been detected in the Sgr B2N. Using the rotational and centrifugal distortion constants along with the electric dipole moment, we have calculated energies of 100 rotational levels of each of the ortho and para species of \(c\)-C2H4O molecule and the Einstein \(A\)-coefficients for radiative transitions between the levels. The values of Einstein \(A\)-coefficients along with the scaled values for the collisional rate coefficients are used for solving a set of statistical equilibrium equations coupled with the equations of radiative transfer.Brightness-temperatures of five rotational transitions of each of the ortho and para species of \(c\)-C2H4O molecule are investigated. Out of these ten transitions, three transitions are found to show the anomalous absorption and rest seven are found to show the emission feature. We have also investigated seven transitions observed unblended in the Sgr B2(N). We have found that the transitions \(3_{3 0} - 3_{2 1}\) (23.134 GHz), \(2_{2 0} - 2_{1 1}\) (15.603 GHz), \(3_{3 1} - 3_{2 2}\) (39.680 GHz) and \(1_{1 1} - 0_{0 0}\) (39.582 GHz) may play important role for the identification of ethylene oxide in a cosmic object. 相似文献

We present the investigation of 11 recurring solar jets that originated from two different sites (site 1 and site 2) close to each other (\({\approx}\,11~\text{Mm}\)) in NOAA active region (AR) 12035 during 15?–?16 April 2014. The jets were observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) telescope on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite. Two jets were observed by the telescope of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, India, in H\(\upalpha\). On 15 April, flux emergence is strong in site 1, while on 16 April, flux emergence and cancellation mechanisms are involved in both sites. The jets of both sites have parallel trajectories and move to the south with a speed between 100 and 360 km?s?1. The jets of site 2 occurred during the second day have a tendency to move toward the jets of site 1 and merge with them. We conjecture that the slippage of the jets could be explained by the complex topology of the region, which included a few low-altitude null points and many quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs), which could intersect with one another. 相似文献
