A bathymetric overview of the Mariana forearc   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Bathymetric data at a 200-m contour interval for the entire Mariana forearc, from south of 13°N to 25°N, permits the first comprehensive overview of this feature. The Mariana forearc represents a sediment-starved end-member. The forearc in its southern and central sections is divisible into a structurally complex eastern province and a less-deformed western province. Despite the absence of an accretionary complex the Mariana forearc has a well-defined outer-arc high; this probably results from a greater concentration of low-density serpentinized mantle lithosphere beneath the outer forearc relative to the inner forearc. This serpentinization gradient is coupled with differing deformational styles of thinner and more brittle lithosphere beneath the outer forearc compared to thicker and more ductile lithosphere beneath the inner forearc. The bathymetric data also support models calling for extension along-strike of the forearc, reflecting an increase in arc length accompanying the crescent-shaped opening of the Mariana Trough back-arc basin. Both northeast and northwest ridges and grabens can be identified, with the latter restricted to the southern part of the forearc and the former widely distributed in the central and northern forearc. Northeast-oriented extensional structures are supplanted northward by long, linear northwest-trending structures that are interpreted as left-lateral strike–slip faults. These variations in deformation along-strike of the forearc manifest a transition from nearly orthogonal convergence in the south to highly oblique convergence in the north.  相似文献

Abstract— The Marquez Dome, Leon County, Texas represents a 13 km diameter Paleocene/Eocene impact structure formed in largely unconsolidated sediments in a near-shore environment. The present study is an analysis of samples from cores taken from boreholes drilled separately on the edge of the central uplift and in the surrounding annular basin. The borehole drilled in the annular basin of the structure penetrated a sequence of interbedded sands, silts, and shales that is typical of the stratigraphy of the surrounding area. In contrast, the borehole drilled on the edge of the central uplift penetrated material that is relatively homogeneous in chemical composition and texture and may represent a mixture of sand, silt, clay, and minor carbonate derived from deeper levels in the preimpact stratigraphy. Veins containing pseudotachylitic breccias are not found and are not expected in this environment because low-strength target materials are not conducive to frictional melting. Similarly, the low strength and unconsolidated nature of these target materials are not conducive to the formation of other types of typical impact breccias (e.g., melt rocks or suevites). The absence of such lithologies results either from explosive ejection of these materials caused by the water-rich character of the target sediments or, more probably, from removal of these materials by deeper postimpact erosion than has been suggested previously. Planar deformation features (PDFs) were not found in quartz grains from any of these samples. The scarcity of quartz grains with PDFs, which have only been reported in rare impact breccias from the central uplift, and the large amount of vertical displacement indicated for the central uplift of this structure may also be a consequence of the low strength of target materials.  相似文献

The Wingellina Hills intrusion is a small composite gabbroic/ultramaficintrusion and forms a tectonically dismembered segment of theUpper Proterozoic Giles complex in central Australia. Its 1600m of exposed magmatic stratigraphy formed in a continuouslyfractionating, periodically replenished magma chamber. Olivinegabbro and gabbronorite units alternate with lenticular strataboundintercalations of ultramafic (peridotite and pyroxenite) cumulates.A well-developed hybrid footwall zone of intermingled gabbroand pyroxenite underlies each ultramafic unit and demonstratesthe intrusive relationships of ultramafics into gabbroic cumulatemembers. The limited range of mg-number [100 ? Mg/(Mg+Fe)] of ferromagnesiansilicates indicates that the magmatic sequence covers a rathersmall spectrum in chemical fractionation and that the WingellinaHills intrusion represents the basal portion of a formerly largerlayered complex. The mg-number of olivine ranges from 89 to77, below which olivine is replaced by cumulus orthopyroxene.Clinopyroxene covers a wider mg-number range from 91 to 77 andis systematically enriched in MgO relative to coexisting orthopyroxeneand olivine. Anorthite content in plagioclase generally correlatespositively with mg-number changes of coexisting ferromagnesiansilicates. Interstitial plagioclase in clinopyroxenites containsexsolution lamellae of pure orthoclase. These antiperthitesare among the most calcic recorded, with plagioclase hosts betweenAn60 and An80. Bulk antiperthite compositions range around An65–Ab15–Or20and straddle a high-temperature (Or20) solvus in the plagioclasetriangle. The extent of former solid solution between calcicplagioclase and orthoclase indicates crystallization and coolingof the cumulates under moderate pressure and anhydrous conditions. Cryptic mg-number variations show that the intrusion experiencedweak iron enrichment with stratigraphic height. Normal fractionationis confined to the gabbroic members of the sequence, whereasultramafic intercalations are associated with sharp chemicalreversals toward more refractory mineral compositions. Reversalsof mg-number are considerably displaced into the underlyinggabbroic units by up to 50 m relative to the basis of ultramaficintercalations, which indicates extensive postcumulus infiltrationmetasomatism following the emplacement of fresh magma. The trivalentoxides in clinopyroxene have retained their pristine stratigraphicvariation patterns through later metasomatic events and stillcoincide with the cumulus layering. Macroscopic and cryptic layering in the Wingellina Hills intrusionare consistent with a continuously fractionating magma chamberwhose differentiation path was repeatedly reset by periodicinfluxes of primitive parent melt. Ultramafic and gabbroic cumulatemembers can be derived from a single olivine-saturated parentmelt by sequential separation of olivine, olivine-clinopyroxene,and finally olivine/orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-plagioclase.A series of orthopyroxene-rich cumulates in the mixing zonesof the two melts crystallized from hybrids of the most primitiveand most evolved end-member compositions. Liquidus temperatures calculated for the resident and replenishingmelt components yield 1250 and 1350?C, respectively. As a resultof this temperature difference, fresh influxes of hot parentliquid crystallized rapidly under strongly undercooled conditionsas they ponded on, and quenched against,the chamber floor. Rapidcooling caused a temporary acceleration of the crystallizationfront and formation of impure cumulates with high trapped meltproportions, which resulted in a close coincidence of orthocumulateunits with stratigraphic levels of primitive melt addition.Grain sizes in orthocumulates vary with the cooling rate andpass through a maximum as the degree of undercooling increases.High cooling rates also influenced the composition of some cumulusphases. Clinopyroxenes from ultramafics in the mixing zonesare enriched in iron and aluminium (despite a more primitiveparent melt) and fall outside the fractionation path, especiallyif the batch of new hot magma was small compared with the poolof cooler resident liquid. Aluminous cumulus spinel is partof a metastable crystallization sequence and only crystallizedin the most magnesian ultramafics after episodes of intraplutonicquenching.  相似文献

In the French Southern Alps, alternating pelagic limestones and marls of Hauterivian age contain a dense network of burrows. Differences between the original and preserved forms of the burrows provide evidence of sediment deformation. (a) Total compaction, from early dewatering of sediment to deep burial compression, caused flattening of burrows parallel to bedding. Its relation to carbonate is measured, and a tentative mathematical relation is proposed, (b) Synsedimentary slumping is shown by total disordering of the bioturbation network in the displaced layers. (c) A more characterized deformation is occasionally visible only on the upper part of some limestone beds. The sliding is indicated by the dip of burrows in the same direction as the flow. (d) Similar embryonic flows occur in the middle of rare limestone beds. It is thus suggested that this can account for some of the double beds that occur in pelagic alternations of calcareous and marly beds.  相似文献

Polar bear hunting success on ringed seals in subnivean lairs and basking on the fast ice, was studied in Hornsund, Svalbard. A few bears were observed while actually hunting, but in most cases bear tracks were followed by snowmobile to determine the outcome of hunts. Seal carcasses were classified from size and tooth annuli as pups, juveniles or adults. A total of 62 subnivean structures were entered by bears, with six seals killed. One of ten charges on basking seals resulted in a kill. Success rates of bears in Hornsund arc compared with results of studies in Canada and Svalbard. Compiled data from published and unpublished sources on copepod grazing of the large-sized copepods in the Barents Sea give wide ranges in grazing rates. Approximate average values indicate daily rations of 7–18% for copepodite stages V and VI and considerably higher values for the earliest copepodite stages. It is demonstrated that individual variability in gut fullness of copepods from a given locality is typically very high and not closely related to variable food abundance or depth of occurrence. There is no diel feeding rhythm during the summer, and even when relating copepod grazing to a number of biotic and abiotic factors through stepwise linear regression analysis, much of the variability remains unexplained. It is suggested that feeding behaviour, food quality and feeding history of the copepods all play important roles as factors which regulate copepod grazing. Model simulations on the phytoplankton succession, using literature data on laboratory-determined growth characteristics for solitary cells and colonies of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii and large diatoms, indicate that the extent of the mixed layer and selective grazing by zooplankton are important factors that may explain the occurrence of dense blooms of P. pouchetii colonies, frequently observed during the spring.  相似文献

Post‐glacial, neritic cool‐water carbonates of the Western Mediterranean Sea were examined by means of hydroacoustic data, sediment surface sampling and vibrocoring to unravel geometries and to reconstruct sedimentary evolution in response to the last sea‐level rise. The analysed areas, located on the Alboran Ridge, in the Bay of Oran, and at the southern shelf of the island of Mallorca, are microtidal and bathed by oligotrophic to weakly mesotrophic waters. Seasonal water temperature varies between 13 °C and 27 °C. Echosounder profiles show that the Bay of Oran and the southern shelf of Mallorca are distally steepened ramps, while the Alboran Ridge forms a steep‐flanked rugged plateau around the Alboran Island. In the three areas, an up to 10 m thick post‐glacial sediment cover overlies an unconformity. In Oran and Mallorca, stacked lowstand wedges occur in water depths of 120 to 130 m. On the Alboran Ridge and in the Bay of Oran, highstand wedges occur at 35 to 40 m. Up to 5 m long cores of upper Pleistocene to Holocene successions were recovered in water depths between 40 and 81 m. Deposits contain more than 80% carbonate, with mixed carbonate‐volcaniclastics in the lower part of some cores in Alboran. The carbonates consist of up to 53% of aragonite and up to 83% of high magnesium calcite. Radiocarbon dating of bivalve shells, coralline algae and serpulid tubes indicates that deposits are as old as 12 400 cal yr bp . The carbonate factories in the three areas are dominated mostly by red algae, but some intervals in the cores are richer in bivalves. A facies rich in the gastropod Turritella, reflecting elevated surface productivity, is restricted to the Mallorca Shelf. Rhodoliths occur at the sediment surface in most areas at water depths shallower than 70 m; they form a 10 to 20 cm thick veneer overlying rhodolith‐poor bioclastic sediments which, nonetheless, contain abundant red algal debris. This rhodolith layer has been developing for the past 800 to 1000 years. Similar layers at different positions in the cores are interpreted as reflecting in situ growth of rhodoliths at times of reduced net sedimentation. Sedimentary successions in the cores record the post‐glacial sea‐level rise and the degree of sediment exposure to bottom currents. Deepening‐upward trends in the successions are either reflected by shallow to deep facies transitions or by a corresponding change of depth‐indicative red algae. There are only weak downcore variations of carbonate mineralogy, which indicate that no dissolution or high magnesium to low magnesium calcite neomorphism occurs in the shallow subsurface. These new data support the approach of using the Recent facies distribution for interpretation of past cool‐water, low‐energy, microtidal carbonate depositional systems. Hydroacoustic data show that previous Pleistocene transgressive and highstand inner ramp deposits and wedges were removed during sea‐level lowstands and accumulated downslope as stacked lowstand wedges; this suggests that, under conditions of high‐amplitude sea‐level fluctuations, the stratigraphic record of similar cool‐water carbonates may be biased.  相似文献

Maar lake Laguna Potrok Aike is located north of the Strait of Magellan (south‐eastern Patagonia). Seismic reflection profiles revealed a highly dynamic palaeoclimate history. Dunes were identified in the eastern part of the lake at approximately 30 to 80 m below the lake floor, overlying older lacustrine strata, and suggest that the region experienced dry conditions probably combined with strong westerly winds. It is quite likely that this can be linked to a major dust event recorded in the Antarctic ice cores during Marine Isotope Stage 4. The dunes are overlain by a series of palaeo‐shorelines indicating a stepwise water‐level evolution of a new lake established after this dry period, and thus a change towards wetter conditions. After the initial, rapid and stepwise lake‐level rise, the basin became deeper and wider, and sediments deposited on the lake shoulder at approximately 33 m below present‐day lake level point towards a long period of lake‐level highstand between roughly 53·5 ka cal. bp and 30 ka cal. bp with a maximum lake level some 200 m higher than the desiccation horizon. This highstand was then followed by a regressional phase of uncertain age, although it must have happened some time between approximately 30 ka cal. bp and 6750 yrs cal. bp . Dryer conditions during the Mid‐Holocene are evidenced by a dropping lake level, resulting in a basin‐wide erosional unconformity on the lake shoulder. A second stepwise transgression between ca 5·8 to 5·4 ka cal. bp and ca 4·7 to 4 ka cal. bp with palaeo‐shorelines deposited on the lake shoulder unconformity again indicates a change towards wetter conditions.  相似文献

DIODE (Doris Immediate On-board orbit DEtermination) is a series of real-time orbit determination software, which process one-way up-link Doppler measurements performed by a DORIS receiver on a satellite. The DIODE software are embedded within the DORIS receivers, and they provide orbit and time determination to the user as well as technical parameters to adjust the tracking loop within the instrument. After a first successful flight on-board SPOT4, the second generation of the family operates on-board Jason-1, with more efficient and more accurate algorithms. Similar versions have been embarked onboard SPOT5 and ENVISAT. The accuracy is between 10 and 30 centimeters RMS for the radial component, and about 50 centimeters RMS in 3D. With several Failure Detection and Incident Recovery (FDIR) enhancements implemented in the software, DIODE/Jason-1 has experienced only one anomaly in July 2004; its availability is 99.7%, after two years and a half in-orbit. This article describes the DORIS/DIODE element of the Jason-1 system. It summarizes the main results obtained from the various verification activities that concerned all parts of this navigation and time-tagging Jason-1 subsystem.  相似文献
