In the context of space weather forecasting, an automated detection of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) becomes more and more
important for efficiently handling a large data flow which is expected from recently-launched and future solar missions. In
this paper we validate the detection software package “CACTus” by applying the program to synthetic data from our 3D time-dependent
CME simulations instead of observational data. The main strength of this study is that we know in advance what should be detected.
We describe the sensitivities and strengths of automated detection, more specific for the CACTus program, resulting in a better
understanding of CME detection on one hand and the calibration of the CACTus software on the other hand, suggesting possible
improvements of the package. In addition, the simulation is an ideal tool to investigate projection effects on CME velocity

We use a lattice vibrational technique to derive thermophysical and thermochemical properties of the pure elements aluminum
and iron in pressure–temperature space. This semi-empirical technique is based on either the Mie–Grüneisen–Debye (MGD) approach
or an extension of Kieffer’s model to incorporate details of the phonon spectrum. It includes treatment of intrinsic anharmonicity,
electronic effects based on the free electron gas model, and magnetic effects based on the Calphad approach. We show that
Keane’s equation of state for the static lattice is better suitable to represent thermodynamic data for aluminum from 1 bar
to pressures in the multi-megabar region relative to Vinet’s universal and the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. It appears
that the MGD and Mie–Grüneisen–Kieffer approach produce similar results, but that the last one better represents heat capacity
below room temperature. For iron we show that the high temperature behavior of thermal expansivity can be explained within
the Calphad approach by a pressure-dependent Curie temperature with a slope between –1 and 0 K/GPa. 相似文献

It is important to have detailed knowledge of the electrical properties of the earth's crust in order to recognize geological structures and to understand tectonic processes. In the area surrounding the German Continental Deep Drilling Project (KTB), we have used DC dipole–dipole soundings to investigate the electrical conductivity distribution down to a depth of several kilometres. We have adapted the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) technique, a well-established near-surface method, to large-scale experiments. Independent transmitting and receiving units were used to realize the concept of simultaneous multichannel registration of the scalar electrical potential at 44 dipoles. The measured data yielded apparent resistivities which were inverted to a 2D resistivity model ranging from the surface down to a depth of 4 km. Two highly conductive structures with steep inclination were detected. They are expected to be major fault zones embedded in a metamorphic body. The rather low resistivity ( ρ < 10 Ωm) can be explained by the existence of graphitic minerals and/or electrolytic fluids. 相似文献

Results are presented from two sets of laboratory model experiments on the effects of an isolated seamount upon the flow of an intermediate-water slope current along a continental shelf. The experimental results for initial ambient conditions of respectively two-layer and linearly stratified fluids show that the structure of such a boundary current depends primarily on the values of the appropriate set of dimensionless dynamical parameters (namely the Burger (Bu), Ekman (Ek) and Rossby (Ro) numbers), as well as the dimensionless lateral separation of the seamount and shelf and the proportional height of the seamount relative to the distance from the bottom at which the intermediate-water flows. Comparisons of the present results with those from a previous two-layer fluid study with no obstacle present reveals that the presence of the obstacle does not alter significantly the stability of the current even when situated close to the shelf. However, for such configurations, the density, velocity and vorticity fields in the local zone of interaction between the current and the obstacle are distorted significantly by the presence of the obstacle, provided that the summit of the obstacle penetrates the level of current flow. Measurements of density, velocity and vorticity fields show no significant dependence of the flow interaction upon the detailed bathymetry of the shelf-slope. For stable intermediate-water slope currents, the nature of the interaction with the obstacle is determined primarily by (i) the lateral separation of the obstacle and the shelf edge and (ii) the Ro of the flow. For sufficiently low values of the former and high values of the latter, the interaction results in a splitting of the incident flow around the obstacle, with cyclonic and anticyclonic eddy pairs being generated in the lee. Geostrophic equilibrium is seen to be maintained in the current, even in the near wake of the obstacle. For cases in which the summit of the seamount is below the initially-undisturbed intermediate water level, no Taylor column-like division of the slope current occurs and no significant distortion of the current structure (velocity and density) occurs for the parameter ranges investigated. For linearly stratified cases, measurements show that no significant local elevation or depression of the density interfaces is observed in the interaction zone. The distributions of the local buoyancy frequencies calculated from the density profiles reveal that the minimum value of the frequency upstream of the obstacle is smaller than that downstream, indicating that the flow interactions generate local mixing downstream, with consequent erosion of the density interfaces. 相似文献

The effect of turbulent flow structures on saltation sand transport was studied during two convective storms in Niger, West Africa. Continuous, synchronous measurements of saltation fluxes and turbulent velocity fluctuations were made with a sampling frequency of 1 Hz. The shear stress production was determined from the vertical and streamwise velocity fluctuations. The greatest stress-bearing events were classified as turbulent structures, with sweep, ejection, inward interaction, and outward interaction described according to the quadrant technique. The classified turbulent structures accounted for 63·5 per cent of the average shear stress during the first storm, and 56·0 per cent during the second storm. The percentage of active time was only 20·6 per cent and 15·8 per cent, respectively. High saltation fluxes were associated with sweeps and outward interactions. These two structures contribute positively (sweeps) and negatively (outward interactions) to the shear stress, but have in common that the streamwise velocity component is higher than average. Therefore, the horizontal drag force seems primarily responsible for saltation sand transport, and not the shear stress. This was also reflected by the low correlation coefficients (r) between shear stress and saltation flux (0·12 and 0·14, respectively), while the correlation coefficients between the streamwise velocity component and saltation flux were much higher (0·65 and 0·57, respectively). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The crop factor method is applied to unstressed maize, in which grass is the reference crop, and the evapotranspiration of the latter is determined with the simplified equation of Makkink as proposed by De Bruin (1987). Using the crop factor published by Feddes (1987), a good agreement is found with measurements collected during the growing season of 1985 at the Sinderhoeve (51° 59′ N, 5° 45′ E) near Renkum in The Netherlands. It appears that Makkink's method yields slightly better results than the Penman–Monteith equation using surface resistances fitted to the data set itself. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
