Monitoring sediment microbial community metabolism and structure is instrumental to understanding biogeochemical processes in and ecological impacts on bottom environments. The aim of this study was to determine potential community respiration and to reveal community dynamics of the microorganisms in the dead zone sediments of Omura Bay, Japan. The bay is highly enclosed and develops severe hypoxia in the central regions every summer. We collected sediment core samples from the center of the bay during hypoxia, estimated sediment oxygen consumption by using an adapted in vivo electron transport system activity (in vivo ETSA) assay, enumerated abundance of bacteria, and analyzed bacterial community structure by automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis. Higher ETSA and bacterial diversity were found in upper sediments (within 3?cm depth) from the center than the fringe of the bay. Sediment bacterial community structure of the bay center was distinct from that of the fringe. From these results, upper sediment in the dead zone of Omura Bay was characterized by (1) greater community respiration and (2) greater diversity of bacterial components compared with the non-hypoxic sediment of the bay fringe. These characteristics have important implications for understanding the interaction between microbial communities and the development of hypoxia in Omura Bay. 相似文献

Laboratory frost sorting by needle ice: a pilot experiment on the effects of stone size and extent of surface stone cover 下载免费PDF全文
Sorted patterned ground is ubiquitous where gravelly fine soil experiences freeze–thaw cycles, but experimental studies have rarely been successful in reproducing such patterns. This article reports an attempt to reproduce miniature sorted patterns by repeating needle‐ice formation, which simulates frost sorting in regions dominated by diurnal freeze–thaw cycles. Six full‐scale laboratory models were tested. They consisted of near‐saturated volcanic fine soil topped by small stones of uniform size; the models explored a range of stone size (~6, ~12, ~17 and ~22 mm) and surface abundance (20, 40 and 60% cover). The stones were placed in a grid on the surface. These models were subjected to 20–30 temperature excursions between 10 °C and ?5 °C in 12 hours. The evolution of surface patterns were visually traced by photogrammetry. A data logging system continuously monitored vertical soil displacements, soil temperatures and moistures at different depths. All experimental runs displayed needle‐ice formation (2–3 cm in height) and resulting displacement of stones. The soil domains tended to heave faster and higher than the stones, leading to outward movement of the former and concentration of the stones. In plan view, smaller stones showed relatively fast and long‐lasting movements, while larger stones stabilized after the first five cycles. The 20% stone cover produced stone islands, whereas the 40% cover resulted in sorted labyrinths (a circle‐island complex) that may represent incipient sorted circles. The average diameter or spacing of these forms are 12–13 cm, being comparable to those in the field. The experiments imply that needle‐ice activity promotes rapid formation of sorted patterns, although the formation of well‐defined sorted circles may require hundreds of diurnal frost heave cycles. We present spectra of six luminous quasars at z ∼ 2 , covering rest wavelengths 1600−3200 Å. The fluxes of the UV Fe ii emission lines and Mg ii λ2798 doublet, the line widths of Mg ii and the 3000 Å luminosity were obtained from the spectra. These quantities were compared with those of low-redshift quasars at z = 0.06–0.55 studied by Tsuzuki et al. In a plot of the Fe ii (UV)/Mg ii flux ratio as a function of the central black hole mass, Fe ii (UV)/Mg ii in our z ∼ 2 quasars is systematically greater than in the low-redshift quasars. We confirmed that luminosity is not responsible for this excess. It is unclear whether this excess is caused by rich Fe abundance at z ∼ 2 over low-redshift or by non-abundance effects such as high gas density, strong radiation field and high microturbulent velocity. 相似文献

The insoluble polymer from the Murchison C2 chondrite was studied by a variety of degradation techniques: pyrolysis, depolymerization by Na4P2O7 or CF3COOH, and oxidation by HNO3, Na2Cr2O7, or O2/UV light. Products were identified by IR spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry (time-of-flight and high-resolution). In some cases, parallel measurements were made on a synthetic polymer produced by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction, a meteoritic polymer from the Allende C3V chondrite, and samples of coal or related materials.Our studies confirm the prevailing view that the meteoritic polymer has a bridged aromatic structure with functional groups such as COOH, OH, and CO, but provides much new detail. Oxidation with HNO3 shows that the meteoritic and synthetic polymers have a similar degree of condensation, greater than that of high-volatile bituminous coal. Gentler oxidation with Cr2O2?7 or O2/UV led to the identification of 15 aromatic ring systems as the corresponding carboxylic acids: benzene, biphenyl, naphthalene and phenanthrene and their methyl derivatives, fluoranthene (or pyrene), chrysene, fluorenone, benzophenone, anthraquinone; and the heterocyclics dibenzofuran, benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene, pyridine, quinoline (or isoquinoline), and carbazole. Of 11 aliphatic acids identified, three dicarboxylic acids presumably came from hydroaromatic portions of the polymer, whereas eight monocarboxylic acids probably are derived from bridging groups or ring substituents.Depolymerization with CF3COOH yielded some of the same ring systems, as well as alkanes (C1–C8) and alkenes (C2–C8), alkyl (C1–C5) benzenes and naphthalenes, and methyl- or dimethyl-indene, -indane, -phenol, -pyrrole, and -pyridine. All these compounds were detected below 200°C, and hence probably were indigenous constituents rather than pyrolysis products.Though the match between the synthetic and meteoritic polymer is only fair, several properties of the latter suggest that it, too, was produced by surface catalysis: the predominance of n-alkyl fragments, its occurrence as a surface coating on specific kinds of mineral grains, and the fractionation between polymer and coexisting carbonates. 相似文献

Abstract Upper Paleozoic to Mesozoic sedimentary sequences of chert (Liminangcong Formation), clastics (Guinlo Formation) and a number of limestone units (Coron Formation, Minilog Formation and Malajon Limestone) constitute the accretionary complex of the North Palawan block, Philippines. Based on chert-to-clastic transitions from different stratigraphic sequences around the Calamian Islands, three accretionary belts are delineated: the Northern Busuanga Belt (NBB), the Middle Busuanga Belt (MBB) and the Southern Busuanga Belt (SBB). The accretion events of these belts along the East Asian accretionary complex, indicated by their sedimentary transitions, began with the Middle Jurassic NBB accretion, followed by the Late Jurassic MBB accretion and the Early Cretaceous SBB accretion. Several limestone blocks that formed over the seamounts became juxtaposed with chert–clastic sequences during accretion. During the Late Cretaceous, accretion-subduction along the East Asian margin subsided bringing tectonic stability to the region. The seafloor spreading during the mid-Oligocene disconnected the entire North Palawan block from the Asian mainland and then migrated southward. The collision between the North Palawan block and the Philippine Island Arc system in the middle Miocene generated a megafold structure in the Calamian Islands as a result of the clockwise turn of the accretionary belts in the eastern Calamian from originally northeast–southwest to northwest–southeast. 相似文献

As basic research for the effect of heavy oil on the fish immune system, in this study, the number of leukocyte was counted in Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, after exposure to heavy oil at a concentration of 30 g/8L for 3 days. To compare the numbers of bacteria in the skin mucus between oil-exposed and control fish, viable bacteria were enumerated by counting colony forming unit (CFU). Compared with 5.79+/-1.88 x 10(7)leukocytes/mL in the controls, the exposed fish demonstrated higher counts, averaging 1.45+/-0.45 x 10(8)cells/mL. The bacterial numbers of control fish were 4.27+/-3.68 x 10(4)CFU/g, whereas they were 4.58+/-1.63 x 10(5)CFU/g in the exposed fish. The results suggest that immune suppression of the fish occurred due to heavy oil stressor, and bacteria could invade in the mucus, resulting in the increasing leukocyte number to prevent infectious disease. 相似文献

Frost sorting on slopes by needle ice: A laboratory simulation on the effect of slope gradient 下载免费PDF全文
Following a previous attempt to reproduce miniature sorted patterns on a level surface, we report the results of a full‐scale laboratory simulation on frost sorting produced by needle ice activity on inclined surfaces. Four models, with different slope gradients (5°, 7°, 9°, 11°), were designed. Stones 6 mm in diameter placed in a grid covered 20% of the surface of frost‐susceptible water‐saturated soil. These models were subjected to 20–40 freeze–thaw cycles between 10°C and ?5°C in 12 hours. The evolution of surface patterns was visually traced by photogrammetry. Needle ice growth and collapse induced downslope movement and concentrations of stones. A model produced incipient sorted circles on a 5° slope, whereas it resulted in three distinct sorted stripes on a 7° slope. The average diameter or spacing of these forms is 9.7–19.4 cm, comparable to those in the field dominated by diurnal freeze–thaw cycles. Surface parallel displacements of stone markers were traced with motion analysis software. The observed downslope stone displacements agree with those expected assuming that surface soil and stones move by repeated heaving perpendicular to the surface and vertical settlement due to gravity, although the growth of curved needle adds complexity to the overall displacements. The Himalayas are a key location for understanding centennial‐ to millennial‐scale variations in the Asian monsoon, yet few studies of the late Holocene have been conducted in this sensitive area. Direct evidence for shifts in monsoonal wind strength is often limited to marine proxy records, while terrestrial reconstructions (e.g. lake levels and spleothems) focus on precipitation. Here, we present the first evidence of terrestrial summer monsoon wind strength changes from Lake Rara, western Nepal, based on Mn/Ti ratios, a proxy for lake stratification. These data indicate a link between the Arabian Sea and the Himalayas, suggesting that centennial‐ to millennial‐scale changes in wind strength occurred synchronously. Distinct similarity is also observed between Lake Rara and the southern part of China, which may support previous suggestions that the southern part of China is influenced by Indian summer monsoon. This paper presents an elasto‐plastic model for unsaturated compacted soils and experimental results obtained from a series of suction‐controlled triaxial tests on unsaturated compacted clay with different initial densities. The initial density dependency of the compacted soil behaviour is modelled by establishing experimental relationships between the initial density and the corresponding yield stress and thereby between the initial density and the location and slope of normal compression line. The model is generalized to three‐dimensional stress states by assuming that the shapes of the failure surface and the yield surface in the deviatoric plane are given by the extended SMP criterion. A considerable number of the isotropic compression, triaxial compression and extension tests on unsaturated compacted clay with different initial densities were performed using a suction‐controllable triaxial apparatus, to measure the stress–strain–volume change in different stress paths and wetting paths. The model has well‐predicting capabilities to reproduce the mechanical behaviour of specimens compacted under different conditions not only in isotropic compression but also in triaxial compression and triaxial extension.
