SCUBA-2 CCD-STYLE IMAGING FOR THE JCMT

SCUBA-2 will replace SCUBA (Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in 2006 and will be the first CCD-style camera for submillimetre astronomy. The instrument will simultaneously image at 850 and 450 microns using two focal plane arrays of 5120 pixels each. SCUBA-2 will map the submillimetre sky 1000 times faster than SCUBA to the same signal-to-noise ratio. This paper introduces the detector technology and the challenges faced in reading out a detector array cooled to ～120 mK.     

Time variability of Martian bolometric albedo

A time-sequential set of bolometric albedo maps for Mars has been constructed from Viking Infrared Thermal Mapper data. The maps provide global coverage in longitude for latitudes -60° to +60° at 1° by 1° spatial resolution. Individual maps are constructed under strict geometric constraints for a narrow range of L_s. The set of albedo maps spans a Martian year and includes maps before, during, and after the global dust storms of 1977. Transient brightenings associated with local dust storms or condensate clouds are apparent in some of the maps. During dust-free periods, bolometric albedo maps are generally similar to classical, visual albedo map of Mars. The distribution of bolometric surface albedos is bimodal with typical, clear-sky, Lambert albedos of 0.27 and 0.16 for bright and dark areas, respectively. Atmospheric effects strongly influence apparent surface albedos, especially for dark areas. Neither bright nor dark regions show measurable, long-term variations of bolometric albedos during clear periods.     

On the thermal regeneration rate for light gravitinos in the early Universe

We investigate the light gravitino regeneration rate in the early Universe in models based on N = 1 supergravity. Motivated by a recent claim by Fischler, we evaluate finite-temperature effects on the gravitino regeneration rate due to the hot primordial plasma for a wide range of the supersymmetry-breaking scale F. We find that the leading thermal corrections to the gravitino pole mass and to the Goldstino coupling are negligible for a wide range of temperatures, thereby justifying the extension of the equivalence theorem for the helicity-1/2 gravitino and Goldstino to a hot primordial plasma background. Utilizing the Braaten-Pisarski resummation method, and assuming that the other particles are close to thermal equilibrium, the helicity-1/2 gravitino regeneration rate is found to be insensitive to magnetic Debye screening and of order _s(T) log(1/_s(T))¦m_soft/ F ¦²T³(1_s(T) log(1/_s(T))T²/¦F ¦) up to a calculable, model-dependent O(1) numerical factor. We review the implications of this regeneration rate for supergravity cosmology, focusing in particular on scenarios for baryogenesis.
