We present resolved near-infrared images of near-Earth Asteroid 2004 XP14, obtained with the adaptive optics system on Keck II during July 2006. This is the first time a near-Earth asteroid has been directly imaged from the ground. Our result illustrates the capabilities of adaptive optics and complements radar and spectral observations.  相似文献

Abstract

We conducted a PUB (predictions in ungauged basins) experiment looking at hydrology and crop dynamics in the semi-arid rural Mod catchment in India. The experiment was motivated by the aims (a) to develop a coupled eco-hydrological model capable of analysing land-use strategies concerning crop water need, erosion protection, crop yield and resistivity against droughts and floods, and (b) to assess the feasibility of a strategy for collecting the necessary data in a data-scarce region. Our experiment combines parsimonious data assessment and eco-hydrological model coupling at the lower mesoscale. Linking bottom-up sampling of functionally representative soil classes and top-down regionalization based on spectral properties of the same resulted in a comprehensive distributed data basis for the model. A clear focus on the dominating processes and the catena as the organizing landscape element in the given environmental setting enabled this. We employed the WASA (Water Availability in Semi-Arid environments) model for uncalibrated process-based water balance modelling and integrated a crop simulation subroutine based on the SWAP (Soil Water Atmosphere Plant) model to account for crop dynamics, feedbacks and yield estimation. While we found the data assessment strategy and the hydrological model application largely feasible, in terms of its accounting for scale, processes and model concepts, the simulation of feedbacks with crops was problematic. Contributing to the PUB issue, more general conclusions are drawn concerning spatially-distributed structural information and uncalibrated modelling.

We examined the population genetic structure of the New Zealand endemic clam, Austrovenus stutchburyi, to determine (1) whether populations of this estuarine taxon are genetically subdivided and (2) if the locations of genetic boundaries were congruent with known biogeographic break points. We obtained sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I for 372 A. stutchburyi from 29 New Zealand estuaries and conducted analyses to identify population genetic structure. We detected a pattern of genetic isolation by distance and identified six A. stutchburyi subpopulations, a greater number of subpopulations than reported for much of New Zealand’s open coast benthos. Although these data indicate that long distance dispersal may be less frequent in estuarine than in open coast taxa, partial congruence between genetic and biogeographic boundaries suggests that historical events and natural selection may also contribute to the observed population genetic structure.  相似文献

Microscopic and electron microprobe studies indicate that the Garraf meteorite is a highly-recrystallized chondrite of petrologic type 6. Olivine (Fa24.7; PMD 1.1) and low-Ca pyroxene (Fs20.9; PMD 1.1) compositions indicate that it belongs to the L-group. Based on contents of noble gases, pervasive fracturing of silicates, common undulose extinction of olivine and plagioclase, and the lack of melt pockets and maskelynite, we place Garraf into shock facies b. We conclude that Garraf is a highly recrystallized L6b chondrite that, after recrystallization, was cataclased and comminuted by shock.  相似文献

A small stream in the Great Plains of USA was sampled to understand the streamflow components following intense precipitation and the influence of water storage structures in the drainage basin. Precipitation, stream, ponds, ground-water and soil moisture were sampled for determination of isotopic (D, 18O) and chemical (Cl, SO4) composition before and after two intense rain events. Following the first storm event, flow at the downstream locations was generated primarily through shallow subsurface flow and runoff whereas in the headwaters region – where a pond is located in the stream channel – shallow ground-water and pond outflow contributed to the flow. The distinct isotopic signatures of precipitation and the evaporated pond water allowed separation of the event water from the other sources that contributed to the flow. Similarly, variations in the Cl and SO4 concentrations helped identify the relative contributions of ground-water and soil moisture to the streamflow. The relationship between deuterium excess and Cl or SO4 content reveals that the early contributions from a rain event to streamflow depend upon the antecedent climatic conditions and the position along the stream channel within the watershed. The design of this study, in which data from several locations within a watershed were collected, shows that in small streams changes in relative contributions from ground water and soil moisture complicate hydrograph separation, with surface-water bodies providing additional complexity. It also demonstrates the usefulness of combined chemical and isotopic methods in hydrologic investigations, especially the utility of the deuterium excess parameter in quantifying the relative contributions of various source components to the stream flow.  相似文献

A stainless steel soil corer which was filled with homogenized soil was used to measure the flux (J) of NO between soil and atmosphere and the vertical profile of the NO mixing ratios (m) in the soil atmosphere, both as function of the NO mixing ratio (mm a ) in the atmosphere of the headspace. The NO emission flux decreased linearly with increasing NO mixing ratio and turned into a deposition flux after passage of the compensation point (m c) at about 400 ppbv NO. Almost the same compensation point was obtained when the turnover of NO was measured in flask-incubated soil samples as function of the NO mixing ratio. The flux (J) of NO at the soil-atmosphere interface was calculated from the production rate (P) of NO and the NO uptake rate constant (k) that were measured in these flask-incubated soil samples using the diffusion model of Galbally and Johansson (1989). The calculated fluxes agreed within <15% with those actually measured. The vertical profiles of NO were fitted to an exponential function and analyzed by Fick's first law of diffusion. The shape of the profiles indicated a net production of NO in the upper 10 cm soil layer when the atmospheric NO mixing ratio was below the compensation point and in a net consumption of NO when the atmospheric NO mixing ratio was above the compensation point. In soil layers below 10 cm depth, the turnover of NO resulted in compensation of production and consumption rates. Measurement of the actual diffusion coefficient using SF6 showed that gas transport in the soil core was not only due to molecular diffusion but in addition due to a bidirectional gas flow. The experimentally determined diffusion coefficient was smaller than that computed from soil porosities, but resulted together with the additional transport term in NO fluxes that were close (< ±15%) to those measured. This is the first comprehensive study of NO concentration profiles and turnover rates in soil providing a theoretical basis for modelling NO fluxes at the soil-atmosphere interface.  相似文献

We hypothesise that salmon year class strength is determined in two stages during the first year in the ocean. There is an early natural mortality that is mostly related to predation, which is followed by a physiologically-based mortality. Juvenile salmon that fail to reach a critical size by the end of their first marine summer do not survive the following winter. In this study we describe our initial tests of this critical size and critical period hypothesis using data from ocean surveys of juvenile salmon and from experimental feeding studies on coho. Conservative swept volume abundance estimates for juvenile coho, and possibly chinook, indicate that there is high mortality in fall and winter during their first year in the sea. Studies of otolith weight show that the length and otolith-weight relationship for young coho changes in the early fall of their first ocean year. Studies of growth and associated hormone levels in feeding studies show that slow growing juvenile coho are stunted and deficient in an insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). Juvenile coho sampled in September had low IGF-I values, indicative of poor growth. The results of these studies provide evidence for the general hypothesis that growth-related mortality occurs late in the first marine year and may be important in determining the strength of the year class (brood year). The link between total mortality and climate could be operating via the availability of nutrients regulating the food supply and hence competition for food (i.e. bottom–up regulation).  相似文献

Porosity is a fundamental property of marine sediment from which wet bulk density can be easily determined and used in a variety of geoacoustic, geotechnical, and sedimentological studies, analyses, and models. However, methods of sampling marine sands suffer from the common problem of core disturbance making the in situ porosity difficult to obtain. Embedding the sediment within an epoxy resin matrix will minimize the disturbance to the microfabric and preserve the in situ sedimentary structure for subsequent study. Image analysis can then be used on thin sections to study the microfabric and porometry. A comprehensive review and analysis of published data on the porosity of predominantly clean sands has been completed and a simple, accurate, and nondestructive technique is described for preparing and measuring the porosity of marine sediment (siliciclastic sand) that has been infiltrated aboard ship immediately upon sample collection and chemically fixed and infiltrated with epoxy shortly thereafter. The average porosity of 36 samples of marine sand collected offshore Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and embedded with resin was determined to be 41.30%. From the review of published data the average porosity of sand was determined to be 37.7%, 42.3%, and 46.3% for packed, natural (in situ), and loose packing conditions, respectively, for a range of sorting coefficients and grain sizes.  相似文献

Endogreisen and exogreisen weakly mineralized with Bi, Sn, and Mo are associated with two of three granite porphyry (granite) cupolas hosted in Silurian metasedimentary rocks at True Hill, southwestern New Brunswick. The epizonal, weakly peraluminous and compositionally evolved True Hill granite is quartz and K-feldspar porphyritic; groundmass textures, such as granophyric patches, miarolitic cavities, and pegmatite pods, are indicative of rapid cooling and vapor saturation.The greisen mineralization in cupolas B and C is overprinted by various types of alteration, reflecting multi-stage devolatilization of the magma. The most intense topaz-bearing greisen is confined mainly to the apical parts of the granite. In places, fluorite is associated with silicification, sericitization, and chloritization, which is common to greisen-type alteration. The alteration types reflect the physical and chemical changes in the hydrothermal fluid that was derived principally by second boiling of the magma. Al-normalized, mass-balanced geochemical data supported by petrographic observations show that in the greisenized True Hill granite, Fe, Mn and Mg enrichment corresponds to chlorite and/or Fe-muscovite alteration and are coincident with leaching of Na and K and deposition of SiO2. Ca was remobilized in the greisen environment, but erratically deposited as fluorite. Minor P and LREE enrichment are reflected by the presence of monazite in the greisen. The HFSE are mobile to a minor degree, based on correlations with elements known to be hydrothermally mobile. The base metals correlate with S and other ore-forming elements. The distribution of many of the trace elements is related to alteration, including the leaching of alkalis, which leads to the stabilization of aluminosilicates, principally muscovite and topaz. The distribution of trace elements reflects their relative mobility during greisenization, with high-field-strength elements (Zr and Ti) the most immobile and the lithophile and chalcophile elements the most mobile. Breccias and greisen alteration in cupola C at True Hill are similar to those at the base of the W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen in the Fire Tower zone above the Mount Pleasant fine-grained granite.  相似文献
